## What is 音訓?

音訓 (on-kun) is a focused flashcard app for the on'yomi and kun'yomi readings of every jōyō kanji taught in Japanese elementary school — all 1,026 characters across all six grades, in one app, with animated stroke order on every character.

ALL SIX GRADES, ONE APP, ONE PRICE 1st grade (80), 2nd grade (160), 3rd grade (200), 4th grade (202), 5th grade (193), 6th grade (191) — every kanji is here, included in one purchase. Pick a grade from the start screen and switch any time. Buy once and every grade is yours: there is no in-app purchase, no subscription, and nothing left to unlock later.

STROKE ORDER, ANIMATED Tap a card in study mode and the character draws itself, one stroke at a time, in the correct order. A faint outline shows where each stroke is heading, and the stroke being drawn is highlighted so your eye can follow along. Every character is rendered from real stroke-order data, not a font.

STUDY MODE Browse a grade's kanji at your own pace. Swipe to navigate, tap to flip and watch the strokes. Shuffle the deck or work in order. No timer, no score, no pressure.

EXAM MODE Test yourself against a grade's full shuffled deck. Swipe right if you remembered the reading, left if you forgot. Each card flips to reveal the answer with colour-coded feedback, and you can tap to correct yourself before moving on. At the end you get a grade, a score breakdown, and a grid showing exactly which kanji need more work.

PRACTICE MODE Unlocked after three exams in a grade. The app tracks your history and builds a deck from your weakest kanji in that grade — the ones you forget more often than you remember. Clear them all and you'll see "Nothing to practice!"

COMING FROM 音訓 一年生? This is an update to 音訓 一年生. If you already own it, grades 2 through 6 are added to your app at no extra charge, and your existing grade 1 score history and practice progress are kept — there is nothing to export or restore.

If you used the separate 二年生 through 六年生 apps, their history does not carry over to this app. Each app keeps its saved data separately on your device, so those apps and their history are untouched if you keep them installed.

FEATURES - All 1,026 jōyō kanji, grades 1 through 6, with on'yomi and kun'yomi - Animated stroke order for every character - Romaji for every reading - Three colour themes: White, Light and Dark - iPhone and iPad, with the layout scaled for larger screens - Session auto-save — resume an interrupted exam any time - Score history with per-kanji results, kept separately per grade - Letter grades (A–F) and visual report cards - Adaptive practice deck built from your own exam history, per grade - Fully offline — no internet, no account, no ads - Reduce Motion supported

DESIGNED FOR LEARNERS No gamification, no streaks, no subscriptions. A clean tool that helps you internalise kanji readings and stroke order through repetition and honest self-assessment.

PERFECT FOR - Students working through the full elementary kanji curriculum - Japanese learners building reading skills grade by grade - Parents and tutors supporting kanji practice across multiple grades - Anyone who wants a fast, reliable kanji drill

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-10-07

音訓 now covers all six grades. Grades 2 through 6 join grade 1, for 1,026 jōyō kanji in one app — study, exam and practice modes, animated stroke order, spoken readings and detailed score reports for every grade. Your existing grade 1 history is kept. Switch grades any time from the start screen.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-08-24

Stroke order, animated.

Tap any card in study mode and the character now draws itself, one stroke at a time, in the correct order. A faint guide shows where each stroke is heading, and the stroke being drawn is highlighted so your eye can follow along. Every character is rendered from real stroke-order data rather than a font.

Also in this update:

• iPad support — the card, readings and stroke animation scale for larger screens
• A redesigned app icon
• Readings and meanings reviewed for all 80 first-grade kanji. Cards now show the sense taught in first grade rather than a dictionary's first entry: 空 reads "sky" rather than "empty", 校 is "school", and counters keep their full form (一 → ひと(つ)).
• Respects the Reduce Motion accessibility setting

### 1.0 — 2026-04-16
