## What is おふでさき朗読?

A free reader for "Ofudesaki" — displayed in traditional vertical Japanese text and read aloud by the device's built-in speech synthesis.

IMPORTANT: THE TEXT IS IN JAPANESE ONLY
This app contains the original Japanese text (historical kana orthography). It does not include an English translation or a modern-language rendering. The app's interface is available in several languages, but the scripture itself is presented only in its original Japanese.

ABOUT THIS APP
"Ofudesaki" is one of Tenrikyo's three scriptures. This is an unofficial app, built to make the text accessible to people with visual or hearing impairments. It has no affiliation with Tenrikyo Church Headquarters or any related organization, and has not received their official supervision, permission, or endorsement. The app offers no interpretation of doctrine — only a way to read a public-domain text as it was written.

THE TEXT
The complete text as published on Japanese Wikisource: Parts 1 through 17, 1,711 verses. Presented as-is, with no commentary or modernization.

FEATURES
- Vertical text display; move through verses horizontally
- Read aloud, at speeds from 0.25x to 2x
- Playback continues with the screen off
- Bookmarks, favorites, and read-progress tracking
- Jump directly to any verse number
- Adjustable text size

ACCESSIBILITY
Designed so that blind and low-vision users can listen using VoiceOver and the built-in speech, that users with low vision or age-related sight loss can enlarge the text, and that deaf and hard-of-hearing users can follow the text without relying on audio.

ABOUT THE READING AIDS (FURIGANA)
Pronunciation readings are not part of the original text; they are data we created ourselves. They are hidden by default and shown only when enabled in settings. Interpretations of historical kana orthography may contain errors.

COST
The text and every feature are free, and always will be. There is no paywall, no content unlocked by purchase, and no advertising. The in-app support options are an optional way to support the developer; they unlock nothing. Support goes to the developer (the operating company), not to any religious organization.

TERMS OF USE (EULA)
This app uses Apple's standard End User License Agreement (EULA).

NOT INCLUDED
Sign-language video, braille display support, professionally recorded narration, and translations or modern-language renderings.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.6 — 2026-09-25

- Fixed an issue where, at large text sizes, the verse heading and the beginning of the verse could be hidden at the top of the screen after moving to a verse.
- The "Something went wrong while loading" screen shown at startup can now be scrolled, so it stays readable and usable at large text sizes.
- Made saving of read verses and reconnecting for support purchases more reliable.

### 1.4.5 — 2026-09-22

- Fixed an issue where the verse read just before closing a volume was sometimes not marked as read.
- Fixed an issue where, at large text sizes, verses were not marked as read even after you read them.
- Fixed an issue where, on iPad in vertical layout, the verse you were reading could shift position after resizing in Split View.
- If a support purchase stops before it is finalized, reopening the Support screen now completes it automatically.
- If the selected voice has been removed from the device, playback now shows an error instead of staying silent.
- VoiceOver now announces whether a verse has been read when it reads the verse number.
- The VoiceOver announcement of the number of search results no longer interrupts while you are typing.

### 1.4.4 — 2026-09-17

- Fixed an issue where, at the larger accessibility text sizes, characters in the vertical text could be clipped or cut off. Column width now follows the text size.
- Fixed an issue where, at large text sizes, the playback speed row was truncated, screen titles were hidden, and the "Bookmarks / Favorites / Read" selector in the Bookmarks screen wrapped in the middle of a word.
- Verses in the search results and the bookmark, favorite, and read lists now wrap instead of being cut off with "…".
- Fixed an issue where, in horizontal layout, the repeat mark "／＼" could be split across a line break.
- Fixed an issue where the verse at the top of the list shifted back by one verse each time you changed a setting.
- Fixed an issue where, on iPad in horizontal layout, the verse you were reading could shift position after rotating the screen or resizing in Split View.
- Fixed an issue where, when the app's display language differs from the device language, VoiceOver read some items ("About this app" and "Diagnostic log" in Settings, playback notices, and "Match device setting" in the language picker) in a different language's voice.

### 1.4.3 — 2026-09-16

- Fixed an issue where, after changing the text size or similar settings, the verse being read could scroll off screen or a different verse could be shown.

- Fixed an issue where, after tapping "Back to the current verse" while following, stopping and playing again could start from a different verse.
- Fixed an issue where a bookmark you had just removed could reappear when you returned to the app.
- Improved the ordering and loading speed of the bookmark and favorite lists.
- Fixed an issue where the "Continue reading" position could revert to an older position right after launch.
- Fixed the display after restoring purchases.
- Fixed an issue where, in some languages shown in English, VoiceOver read the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy in a different language's voice.

### 1.4.1 — 2026-09-13

- Fixed an issue where turning off "Keep reading with the screen off" stopped the current reading immediately.
- Fixed an issue where, after toggling that setting, the lock screen showed "playing" while paused and needed two taps to resume.
- Fixed an issue where lock screen controls could disappear when you tapped a verse or started another book while reading aloud.
- Fixed headset button presses being ignored right after a speed change.
- Fixed the first tap not registering while the keyboard is open.
- Fixed bookmarks and favorites being applied to the wrong verse while still loading.
- Fixed the display when tapping the monthly support button repeatedly, and when restoring purchases.
- The recovery screen is now usable at large text sizes.
