观世音菩萨是阿弥陀佛的左胁侍，与阿弥陀佛、大势至菩萨（阿弥陀佛的右胁侍）合称为“西方三圣”。

根据《陀罗尼经》云：观世音菩萨能利益安乐一切众生，随众生之机，相应五部五种法，而满足一切愿求。
