### 2/5 — Freezes mid-use

*2024-01-21, version 4.0*

The app freezes and doesn’t work very well. The website works better.

### 2/5 — Back button would really help

*2023-12-14, version 4.0*

Great start just like the site but adding a back button would really help with UX.

### 2/5 — Not awful, but not far from it.

*2020-12-01, version 3.0*

Their focus is certainly on the social aspect of the site, which I’ve never used. Like many, I downloaded to aid in my job search. It works for that. How well it works, however, depends on who you ask.

It’s not terribly intuitive. In fact, at times, it seems purposefully confusing. In order to see the jobs and volunteering opportunities you have to scroll to the bottom and tap an unlabeled button. Why they thought this was a good idea, I do not know. Next comes the part I find most baffling, if not a bit infuriating. After tapping the unlabeled button and clicking “jobs - internships - organizations” you’re taken to a section where you can choose one of the three. The buttons are lined up at the bottom. The order of the buttons is randomized. Why. WHY is it randomized? When the page first loads, it will load in the order it appeared in the last time you visited. A millisecond later, it shuffles. So I’ve accidentally clicked the wrong thing many times.

Apart from the strange decisions they’ve made with the UI/UX, it’s functional. You can search, the filters work well, etc etc. I feel a bit bad complaining about a free app that is genuinely helpful, but what the heck are these people thinking?

### 1/5 — Pointless

*2020-09-19, version 3.0*

I downloaded this thinking it would be a job searching app like the website, but it is just a way to see profiles of other people who are looking for jobs. I just want to search for jobs, not share my info and location with everyone else.

### 1/5 — Get rid of the social aspect

*2019-08-28, version 3.0*

I downloaded this app to search for an apply to jobs on the go, but this appears to just be a social media app that no one is actually using. Totally pointless. The map with circles is completely meaningless and it’s very hard to actually search for an find people or organizations. I just want to be able to view my idealist profile, the jobs I’ve saved and be able to apply to them from anywhere. It looks fancy, but has terrible UI/UX.

### 2/5 — Google login flow doesn’t work/make sense

*2018-08-08, version 2.4*

Log in with Google -> Continue -> sign into Google account -> Error message “We’ve unified login...”

### 1/5 — Has never worked

*2018-07-05, version 2.3*

The app can’t find my location, nothing works when I search and the other two screens are blank. Totally pointless.

### 2/5 — Great idea, bugs need fixing

*2018-04-28, version 1.7*

This app is great in concept & design, especially for those in the nonprofit field. However, the screens just don’t work correctly. The search button takes over half the screen and then blocks the content you searched for. I can’t find where to put my info after the initial log in when I passed it! All fixable, so I hope these kinks get worked out soon!

### 1/5 — Need to fix mobile login issue

*2018-03-06, version 1.3*

Need to fix mobile login issue. Same login credentials work on the regular website, but they don't work for mobile.

### 1/5 — Login does not work

*2017-11-09, version 1.1*

Using the very same email address and password that works fine on the Idealist.org website, I got repeated error messages on this app and was unable to login. Better get working on the bug fixes.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Used to be good

*2026-04-19, version 4.1*

This so used to work great but now I’m prompted to sign in via Google, FB & Apple every 5 seconds. Can’t even use the app anymore

Time to delete

### 1/5 — Can’t log in

*2026-03-30, version 4.1*

I log in through google, and then App keeps telling me to fill out information below first. there’s no place to enter info, i hit save, and then am take to sign in screen where it says sign in first.

### 1/5 — Google Login crash

*2026-03-25, version 4.1*

Got an email about an awesome job so I went to check it out on mobile Safari. Realized I maxed out my main tab group so thought I’d download the app so I don’t have to worry about it right now. I log in with Google as that’s how I signed up, it successfully authenticates, takes me to the app home screen (logged in), then immediately force logs me out and says I need to be logged in to view the page I was on. Tried 3 more times, the removed the app from my phone. I have a 12 Pro Max running current iOS software. I MIGHT consider redownloading if the basic bugs were fixed bc the app is more accessible for someone like me with adhd and 500 open tabs on safari, but also might just suck it up and stick with the site so I don’t have to deal with the unnecessary additions that seem superfluous for an app most people know for the job board exclusively. Seems like the devs could consider splitting this into different apps for different target user personas/user journeys, but that is based on anecdotal data seeing as I’ve not been able to use the app myself.

### 1/5 — App is useless for job search

*2025-11-12, version 4.0*

Get a new search engine and filters. Waste of time trying to look for a job using this app.

### 1/5 — Can’t use filters

*2025-09-24, version 4.0*

I love this site and have used it for years. However the app isn’t usable on a phone since you can’t access the filters at all. When you click one you can’t see the options. Very frustrating. I’m on a year old iPhone. Sadly I guess the only way to really use this site is on a desktop.

### 1/5 — Back button

*2024-10-25, version 4.0*

Almost useless without a back button or the ability to swipe to go back.

EDIT: I promise you if this one issue is fixed your AppStore rating would gain a whole new star.

### 1/5 — NO BACK BUTTON

*2024-08-10, version 4.0*

It seems like it’s been a while and this major problem has not been fixed.

### 1/5 — Back button

*2024-07-11*

Almost useless without a back button or the ability to swipe to go back.

### 1/5 — app doesn’t work at all, it’s bugged out

*2023-04-26, version 4.0*

I can’t even use the app it just shows a white screen. It’s completely unusable and needs to be fixed

### 1/5 — Jobs posted are great, App functionality is really lacking

*2021-08-31, version 3.0*

As others have shared, I recognize that Idealist itself doesn’t identify as a site for job seekers. The problem is two-fold: 1) the platform hosts excellent position descriptions, often ones that I don’t see listed elsewhere, and it beckons for you to use it for your job search 2) the actual job search feature and functionality is frustratingly awful.

Start with the fact that jobs are lumped in with two other options that randomly shuffle when you open the app, daring you to click “Internships” by mistake because you moved faster than the shuffler. That is OBNOXIOUS.

Second, it’s easy enough to like/save an interesting job but actually viewing those saved jobs later is an option hidden within several menus that are not intuitive. When you find a saved job, there is no way to mark it as applied or update the status to keep track. Rather, you can unsave it or just leave it there in perpetuity. WHY?

If the career opportunities/job seeker feature is something that so many people want and would use (as evidenced in just these App Store reviews), why on earth wouldn’t Idealist jump on this? I don’t get it.

Maybe they themselves can’t figure out the jobs feature enough to post a position to hire a developer to make it useful? Just a thought.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great for finding social-impact work

*2023-02-15, version 4.0*

This app is simple and easy-to-use. I love how it offers jobs at nonprofit organizations, as well as tools to help me in my social-impact career!

### 5/5 — A Veritable Beacon in the Not-for-Profit World

*2019-02-01, version 3.0*

The utility of Idealist’s goal—to connect idealists to one another—can only become realized if more of us use this platform. I have networked on this app/website and and made lasting connections that will support our cause in future efforts to organize and effect change. But these lasting connections are too few. You’ve heard and/or read this before: people power. Download, rate, and, please, share this tool.

If you only use Idealist to search for work, internships, or volunteer opportunities: you will underutilize the platform but find what you seek. I accepted an offer for the first job that actually means something to me via an application submitted on this platform.

### 5/5 — Great App

*2018-07-27, version 2.4*

Very nice tool to meet other people and look for jobs related to social good issues!

### 5/5 — Very Cool & Useful

*2018-07-27, version 2.4*

This APP is awesome for connecting with people, both around the corner and around the world, who share your interests in effecting change and taking action to do good things. As an animal welfare advocate, the App has already helped me to find like hearted people and we are connecting to mobilize and organize our efforts to help animals.
Great APP design too!

### 4/5 — Just like the site!

*2023-02-23, version 4.0*

I like that this app is just like the Idealist website. It’s so much easier to search and apply to nonprofit jobs.

### 3/5 — Great listings. Terrible app

*2026-04-04, version 4.1*

This app glitches so badly it’s practically unusable. I have to log in after I open each listing to read. I have to redo my search settings each time I log in.

The listings are great, but using this app is painful.

### 3/5 — Great Idea, Poor App

*2026-02-17, version 4.0*

The app was a bit difficult when I first started using it, but I was able to figure it out. Since then, I have not been able to figure out how to update any settings, or easily navigate the app whatsoever. I will continue checking in to see if the app has gotten any updates that might have addressed this issue. I will certainly re-attempt if it improves!

### 3/5 — Back button makes app inconvenient

*2024-05-11, version 4.0*

When searching you are able to go back to the search via that “back to results” button. Unfortunately, if you go into a listing organization’s profile or click on any of the tabs for more information, you are not able to toggle back and have to start your search from the beginning. Makes using the app less desirable than webpage.

### 2/5 — App functionality

*2026-06-10, version 4.1*

I downloaded this app to find volunteering opportunities in my area. The site has been very helpful for me and I was excited to be able to search more conveniently on my phone. However, the app is lacking in some basic functionality features making app is overall useless to me. For some reason, there is no way to filter by location, so I see thousands of results with no way to narrow them down. I live in a very populous city. For a company whose ethos is community service it is quite difficult to service my community without a filter to locate it. As others have noted, there is no “back” button, so one has to go through the tedious process of redoing every search after you tap on a job listing. I will probably just use the site from now on.

### 2/5 — Where did location go?

*2026-01-20, version 4.0*

I used to search for remote work and change my radius to entire country, but can’t do that anymore. Sent a message but never got a response
