It’s hard to identify flies in general. Only reason it’s getting two stars cause it shows you what’s hatching in your area, hopefully that correct ### 2/5 — Wish this worked *2025-02-04* Great idea. Doesn’t work as advertised. You are not submitting pictures and its auto detect takes forever to lock on. I’m using a table and a clamp so I’m steady. I can’t imagine if I had holding my phone. In addition, ive gone through a bunch of flies, it has id’d several wrong, a few with 54% confidence, and several unmatched. I would love for this to get better and I’ll check back. Otherwise my subscription is one and done. ### 1/5 — Not worth the subscription *2024-10-06* A good concept, but sadly this app is not really up to the job. I could only get it to indentify a minority of the flies in my box and some of them were just plain wrong. Good information on fly patterns but this is aimed more at the US user and less so the European one. Looks like this app is still a work in progress and so should be free. Identified a Kaufman stone nymph as a midge. Id’ed a mop fly as an single egg. I could go on but not worth my time. While there are some helpful features in the app, fly identification is ridiculously weak. It was the ONLY reason I paid. Total waste of money. ### 1/5 — Great idea, terrible results. *2024-08-24* I wanted this app to work as I have way too many unidentified flies. I took good, well lit photos on over 20 well known flies (BWO, elk hair caddies, wooly bugger, Adam’s…etc) and every result failed to find a match or got it completely wrong. I’m a commercial fly tyer and avid fly angler. This app has become an extremely valuable resource for me! Not only to track my catches and methods (no more wet notebook paper!), but provides information on the history and additional pattern recipes for flies. The AI identification may not always be 100% accurate, (Identafly says this themselves) but it can get you in the ballpark quickly! Realistically there has to be hundreds of thousands of flies and variations, so to see technology pick up on subtle nuances like this is really quite astounding. I have no doubt this could become the largest collection of flies and patterns ever! Whenever I experience an issue with the app I reach out to Identafly on IG and the problem gets resolved in 24hrs or less. Amazing customer service! The app worked great. I love the fly box, it helps me remember what I need to buy at the fly shop. It also gives you fly options based on the local bugs. It identified a few and missed a few. They need a way to use Google Lens in there AI. I took a Parachute BWO from my box. They identified it as a Hendrickson. Google lens correctly identified it as a Parachute BWO, even showing the picture from BigY, the company I bought it from. I love the concept. It would be perfect for someone like me who only gets on trout streams a few times a year.
