## What is iDML?

The iDML app allows you to preview document layout and edit text in InDesign idml documents on your iPhone and iPad. 

The app shows layout, text content and embedded graphics (and some linked graphics, when the app is able to resolve the link). You can see the exact position of text frames and their content, position of graphic frames and linked objects. When the graphic is embedded in the document, it is shown in the preview.

The stories in the document can be opened for reading and editing.  You choose stories to edit form a list or from the layout view. When editing the text, you can also assign any of the paragraph or character styles that are defined in the document to a selected piece of text.

The app lists paragraph styles, character styles fonts and swatches used in the document.

No layout changes are made to the document when edited in this app and no third party data is manipulated.  The app contains neither InDesign's paragraph composer, nor advanced image processing tools. The preview will not reflect text position 1:1 with InDesign and some vector graphic attributes are simplified. You need to take into account is that the edited story might need copy fitting in InDesign, if you’ve added or removed too much text and the text ends up overset or not filling the frames.

Just paid mega bucks for an app that can’t even properly display a simple one page inDesign document, tried two different versions. Forget the editing, does not work. Was great and much needed in theory....

There is no apparent way to send an idml file back to iTunes. When I select Export to iTunes I get a window that says Choose Format with no options or way to click anything but Cancel. There is no manual or help for this application except a very short into.

I got an iPad for testing digital publishing results and now I use it to create the content. Works great for quick edits and text proofing, I love the ability to add styles.
I wish there was a layout view too.

Does not work as advertised. I have a book that contains ONE story. In iDML on my iPad I get 52 stories!! The very last story is the actual story I want to edit, but every time I open it, the app crashes. Also, I get an error every time I try to connect to my iDisk to download a file. I ended up having to email it to myself. I really, really wanted this app to work because I do a lot of work with InDesign files and it would be neat to be able to do this on the move. However, it is totally useless and definitely not worth $20. It's times like this I wish Apple had a trial system where you could get a refund within the first 24 hours of an app store purchase if an app doesn't work as advertised.
