## What is Ikura Cart?

Everything you spend in Japan, in one app.

Point your camera at a Japanese price tag to see the product name in your language, the tax-included price, and an estimate in your own currency. Add items to track your cart total and how much is left before the tax-free threshold. Set a trip budget and the app works out what you can spend today, then keeps meals, trains, tickets and receipts in the same place.

Shopping
• Scan Japanese price tags
• Product names in your language
• Tax-included price and currency estimate
• Cart total and tax-free progress
• Enter a price by hand when scanning is hard

Trip spending
• A trip budget and what is left of it
• What you can spend per day, from your end date
• Log meals, transport, tickets and more
• Scan a receipt total — you confirm it before it is saved
• Cash and card kept apart, with the cash you have left by your records
• Record money paid back to you
• Spending and shopping by date

While you are there
• Local weather and the week ahead

Currency estimates, receipt readings and weather are all for reference. Final prices and tax-free eligibility are decided by the store. The cash figure counts only what you have recorded.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.3 — 2026-08-31

• Fixed the exchange-rate and contact screens running off the bottom at larger text sizes, with no way to scroll down to what had been cut off. On the exchange-rate screen the part that went missing was the note saying these are stored rates that may differ from what your card is charged.
• The cart count badge no longer outgrows its circle when text is enlarged.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-28

• Japan's tax-free rules change on 1 November 2026. From that day the register charges the full tax-included price, and the shop refunds the consumption tax after customs confirms the goods are leaving Japan. The app shows the guidance that matches the day you shopped — purchases up to 31 October follow the old rules, and those from 1 November the new ones.
• The tax-free checklist has been rewritten for the new scheme: you have 90 days from the day after purchase to leave Japan, you need to be able to show what you bought at departure, and how and when the money comes back is decided by each shop.
• The rule that consumables had to be sealed in a bag and left unopened until you flew home is abolished, as is the ¥500,000 cap on them, so both are gone from the guidance. The ¥5,000 pre-tax threshold is unchanged.
• Fixed the wording in saved shopping records. Under the new scheme nothing is handed back at the till, so the app now shows the refund as still to come rather than as money received.
• Ending a trip is simpler. There are two choices now — finish this trip, or cancel it — and what happens to your records is asked afterwards. Finishing asks whether to file it as a past trip; either answer leaves your shopping and expense records untouched. Cancelling asks whether to keep those records or delete them along with the trip, and shows how many and what they add up to before anything goes.
• You can now record money paid back to you. Pick «Got back» at the top of the expense form, enter the amount, and it comes off the trip total — and if you took it in cash, your recorded cash goes up. For when you cover a friend's share on your card and they hand you cash later.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-24

• A home screen. Open the app and you see what this trip has cost.
• Set a trip budget and dates, and the app tells you what you can spend per day. The budget is optional — everything works without one.
• Tap a day to see what you spent that day.
• Record spending that has no price tag — meals, transport, admission — with a category, and it counts toward the total.
• Photograph a receipt and the app reads the total and the line items for you. You confirm before it saves.
• Cash and card are recorded separately, with the balance of the cash you brought.
• While you are in Japan, the home screen shows the temperature and forecast where you are. Approximate location only, never stored. (Source: Japan Meteorological Agency)
• The app now asks for two permissions: camera and approximate location.
• Type size and layout adapt to your screen.
• Offline now says you are offline.
• Times and amounts now follow the app's language rather than the device's.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-08-11

• Added Japanese. You can pick it in Settings → Display Language.
• Added Japanese yen (JPY) as a display currency, for when you would rather read prices in yen with no conversion. The exchange-rate line is hidden while it is selected.
• The privacy policy and terms now open in the language you picked in the app. They could previously open in a different language.
• Fixed an issue where an item whose name could not be read showed wording from another language.
• Dates on the how-to screens now follow your language's format.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-08-09

• Six more currencies — 11 in total, now including the British pound, euro, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and Singapore dollars. The default follows your device region.
• Coupon discounts on the tax-free screen. Enter the rate (%) or amount (¥) printed on your own coupon and see the final estimate.
• Better product categories. Items that are hard to call — character goods, for example — now ask you to pick instead of guessing.
• New app icon.
• Fixed clipped text on the scan screen at large font sizes, and polished the English wording throughout.
