The background music, drawings, and animation set a perfect atmosphere. The team that developed this app obviously put a lot of time and effort and created a high quality, unique experience to the reader when exploring the classics. Somehow, this app made it all feel new again. The animations of the text, the grotesque illustrations reminiscent (but not derivative) of Gahan Wilson, the pitch-perfect OST that builds from wonder to terrifying revelation... incredible. I hope there are many more “episodes” to come; I would LOVE to see what this team does with The Call of Cthulhu and Rats in the Walls, to say nothing of The Mountains of Madness! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Suspicious *2020-01-12, version 1.0.3* These books are entertaining and well done, but unfortunately I have to give them a low rating due to the apps suspicious behavior. I have purchased all of the iclassics and found that they all immediately default to the 'on' position in cellular data and immediately use nearly a megabyte of data. Why a book would need to use any data at all is curious and that they use that much data is both odd and suspicious. I wrote to the company at the email posted on their website but received no response. I cannot recommend purchasing these books unless they stop this practice of sending whatever data they're gathering and using customers cellular data without permission. ### 1/5 — My apps all went black *2019-12-03, version 1.0.3* Just bought a bunch of collections and now they are all black screens! Don’t buy these🤥 ### 1/5 — Potential hearing loss!! *2019-10-27, version 1.0.3* Be careful when using the app. It recommends headphones but do not and I mean do not use them unless you want your ear drums blown out. At the screen where you first submerge into the title, this loud extremely loud garbled mess screams into your ears no matter how low the volume is. At first I thought it was just the one page, nope. It was the second as well. I dare not go any further with this app. Back to real books and music ### 1/5 — Music/Sound Effects not reliable *2019-06-19, version 1.0.3* I have tried using this app multiple times and every time I try, the music and sound effects do not work. I have tried toggling the music on/off selector as well as restarting my device to uninstalling and reinstalling the app..... All to no avail. It’s a shame because the 1st app and the art in this app are fantastic but the audio experience is unreliable. ### 1/5 — Portuguese? *2019-04-21* Why u put portuguese on description if this app dont have this? 1 star for the trick ### 3/5 — Not bad, but a couple of annoying things *2020-11-29, version 1.0.4* It’s not bad, but there’s a couple of annoying things. The introductory text gives away the central premise of the story. That really frustrated me. It would be so much better to read it not knowing those details, as it’s about the mystery of the unknown. Whenever you open the app after it has been loaded out of memory you have to sit through a pointless animated splash screen. It's a pain if you want to just quickly pick up the story and read a bit of it. And there’s one page early on where there’s vines obscuring the text and they’re moving around so to read the text you’re constantly having to brush them out of the way. That’s what makes this format so helpful and engaging; it utilizes our modern desires for a certain pace, certain highs and lows (and “jump-scares”) and an overall tone or mood. It takes its cues from the past hundred years of suspense and horror tales writ large in cinematic language, and utilizes those tactics and forms to re-tell Lovecraft’s bizarre and lavish stories in a way we can more easily digest. I will, however, argue that Lovecraft’s particular style is designed to inspire the readers by only telling vague descriptors of monsters, ghouls and forms, and leaving the details to their imaginations, thus making many of the illustrations – beautiful, vivid and horrifying as they are – a bit superfluous. We’re I the creative director of this app, I might suggest illustrating only the “edges” of the horror and never fully revealing what a given horrific thing actually looks like. That’s my one criticism of this format. I hope to read more stories - and certainly more from Lovecraft - in this way as “new media” integrates with old formats. After experiencing the first volume of iLovecraft, I was drawn inexplicably to the second. I’m sure he would have been proud of such an imposition, and fail it did not, to delight one’s imagination with visual and audio compliments which truly accentuate one’s imagination, to some extent may even play on the unconscious, I can hear Jung’s praise, in the shadow of my shadow. Well done once again to the team at iClassic. What I would love to see next of course would be a complete illustrated guide to all the monsters and monstrosities of Lovecraft literature. I believe you would be the first to digitally realize this opportunity.
