## What is Immigration?

Immigration law: explore it, search it, and bookmark it!

Immigration lawyers and practitioners in the United States frequently consult four sources of law and procedure: the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), the Eighth Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), the Immigration Court Practice Manual, and the Board of Immigration Appeals Practice Manual. These sources of law and procedure are available in books and on websites. Both have problems.

Books are heavy, particularly for lawyers who lug them to court, and they are slow or impossible to search for specific words or phrases, for example "immigrant visa". Many book versions of the CFR deemphasize the hierarchical nature of that Code, making it difficult to find deeply nested subsections such as 8 CFR § 204.1(a)(5)(i). One may "bookmark" important sections of books with adhesive tabs, but adhesive tabs fall out. Book versions of the CFR often use a tiny, difficult-to-read font. Some websites are easy to search for specific words or phrases, but websites may not allow bookmarking of specific subsections, and websites require Internet connectivity. Books and websites share the problem that they incompletely indicate which INA subsections correspond to which CFR sections, if they contain any indication at all. These correspondences are important. An attorney reading the INA subsection about voluntary departure, for example, would want to see the corresponding subsection of the CFR because both have the force of law.

This app, Immigration, addresses the shortcomings of books and websites. Users can easily navigate to desired subsections of the INA, CFR, and Practice Manuals with a few taps. Users can quickly search for specific words or phrases, seeing each subsection that contains them. For example, a search for "visa petition" in the CFR immediately reveals 95 subsections containing that phrase. Users can apply named bookmarks to any subsection and easily navigate these bookmarks. Users can jump between corresponding INA and CFR sections, for example INA § 240B and 8 CFR § 240.25, which both concern voluntary departure. Finally, users can set font size based on their devices' Dynamic Type setting or app-specific preference.

You have the option of buying a monthly, auto-renewing subscription, called "Updates", which provides regular updates to the laws and procedures. This subscription is charged at time of confirmation to your iTunes account and then monthly. Your subscription will be charged to your credit card during the 24 hours before the end of the current period through your iTunes account. Your subscription will automatically renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.

You can manage subscriptions and turn off auto-renewal in the Settings app. You can find instructions for canceling your subscription in this Terms of Use document: http://racecondition.software/termsOfService.html

This document is also known as the End User License Agreement (EULA) or the Terms of Service.

### 5/5 — Awesome tool for immigration exam

*2020-12-10, version 4.2*

I love the plus and minus—INA is very cumbersome, so anything that makes it easier to read and carry around gets a thumbs up. Though I wish it had hyperlinks embedded to other sections.

**Developer response:** Glad you like it! Not having to carry the INA, CFR, and Practice Manuals to court was a big motivation for me to create Immigration way back in 2013, when I was working as an immigration lawyer. Unfortunately, the hyperlink feature in infeasible. In the course of developing Immigration, I manually inputted all 20,433 sections of the INA, CFR, and Practice Manuals. Implementing hyperlinks would involve examining all of them and changing the ones with section references. I understand why you might want to leave your review at four stars, but a change to five would make my day. 🙏

### 5/5 — THE App to get if you're an immigration lawyer

*2016-10-25, version 2.1*

Very good resource and fairly easy to find sections of the INA.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the review! I hope you are still finding Immigration helpful. With the change of business model earlier this year, I have been updating the regulations on a much-more-regular basis.

### 5/5 — Highly recommend this app

*2015-04-21, version 1.6*

Great resource! Very user-friendly and well thought out. Wish this existed for the FAM as well.

### 5/5 — Very nice app

*2015-02-28, version 1.6*

Great content. Well worth the price.

### 5/5 — 5 ⭐️s

*2014-12-16, version 1.6*

I've tried the competitor app, and this one is so much better. My favorite feature is the scrolling tab bar.

### 4/5 — Everything you need for immigration law

*2014-12-05, version 1.5*

This app has the info I need for a quick reference, and is so much better than lugging books or a laptop around!

Navigation through the app is a breeze, but it could use some fine tuning. For one, I would make each cell sized to the text instead of scrolling. Two would be to add a button to bring up the bookmark and other buttons.

This is a must have app for any immigration attorney and I look forward to future updates!

### 5/5 — all-in-one

*2014-10-25, version 1.5*

I used to lug the INA and CFR to court. Thanks to Immigration, my briefcase is much lighter now!

### 5/5 — Insane.

*2014-09-10, version 1.5*

OMG, INA, CFR, and practice manuals all in one app that's not even maddening to navigate. I don't know who wrote this thing, but... mad skills.

### 3/5 — Needs improvement

*2014-09-06, version 1.5*

Here are the things needed to be improved:
- Too small of a canvas space for text making it hard to scroll up and down on iPhone and thumb covers the text. Author should create appropriate amount of canvas depending on the length of text in the section.
- The prompt screen giving three options of copy, open, or book mark is not very intuitive. Once the section is clicked, it should expand the section, then there should be an option to copy or bookmark afterwards.

Looking forward to the update!

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback. I implemented variable-length sections several years ago.

You can expand or collapse sections without bringing up the menu by tapping the plus or minus on the left side.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2014-08-26, version 1.4*

Very useful and nicely made. Works very smoothly and seems to have a great support team

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.2 — 2020-07-20

This version adds another cat photo.

### 4.1 — 2020-04-28

Since late 2018, when I implemented a subscription for updates to the INA, CFR, and Practice Manuals, subscribers have received sixteen updates for the CFR, thirteen updates for the BIA Practice Manual, and eighteen updates for the Immigration Court Practice Manual. The Immigration Court recently added an entirely new appendix to their Practice Manual. This appendix contains standing orders on telephonic appearances at all Immigration Courts. For implementation reasons, I am releasing this new version of Immigration to make the new appendix available to subscribers.

### 4.0 — 2019-09-29

This version has enhancements for iOS 13, including, crucially, Dark Mode.

There is a bug fix: the last row of the INA, CFR, and Practice Manuals, previously inaccessible, is now accessible.

### 3.8 — 2019-08-22

The terms-of-service button on the subscribe screen now shows terms of service.

Two of the cat images are smaller, reducing total app size.

### 3.7 — 2019-08-07

A banner advertising Immigration's subscription in-app purchase now appears on the INA, CFR, and Practice Manual screens.

Showing corresponding INA/CFR sections no longer causes crashes.
