Behold, gentle reader, for I have at last undertaken that which few men of sound mind would willingly attempt: to set forth, in writing of considerable length and needless grandeur, my solemn judgement concerning the thing before us. And verily, I know not whether I ought to praise it, condemn it, or simply stand afar from it whilst gazing upon it with the solemn bewilderment of a monk who hath discovered that the monastery’s sacred wine hath been replaced with vinegar. Yet, having observed it with an attentiveness bordering upon madness, having pondered its every virtue and failing, and having subjected my poor mortal faculties unto an examination most thorough, I shall now render my verdict. Let none say that I approached this matter lightly. Nay. I came as a scholar cometh unto an ancient manuscript: cautiously, reverently, and with the dreadful suspicion that something within might be profoundly disappointing. I. Of the First Encounter Upon my first meeting with this thing, I confess that my heart knew not what judgement to render. There was, at the beginning, a certain majesty unto it. It possessed the outward appearance of something which had been fashioned with purpose, perhaps even with wisdom. Its very presence seemed to proclaim: “Behold me, for I am no common object, but a work worthy of thy time.” And I, being but a humble observer, was inclined to believe it. Alas. Hope is oft the first victim upon the battlefield of expectation. For whilst the initial impression was one of intrigue, it soon became apparent that beneath the splendid cloak there dwelt a creature of considerably greater complexity. At times it appeared noble; at others, baffling. At certain moments I found myself praising its ingenuity, whilst in the very next breath I questioned what manner of council had gathered together and declared, unanimously, that some of its stranger decisions were indeed acceptable. Nevertheless, I persisted. For a true reviewer abandoneth not his quest merely because the path hath become troublesome. II. Of Its Virtues Let it be known that this review shall not descend into the pit of mere complaint, for there are indeed virtues here worthy of acknowledgement. Foremost amongst these is its character. Aye, character. For there are many things in this world which function adequately yet possess no soul whatsoever. They perform their appointed tasks with the enthusiasm of a tax collector and the charm of a damp stone. This, however, hath something more. There is personality within it. There is intent. There is the unmistakable sense that someone, somewhere, possessed an idea and pursued that idea with such determination that eventually the rest of us were compelled to witness the consequences. And, strangely enough, I respect this. For even when its choices are questionable, they are rarely entirely without interest. Furthermore, there are moments of genuine excellence. These moments are not merely satisfactory; nay, they are sufficiently impressive that one is briefly willing to forgive the lesser portions which surround them. It is during such moments that the thing truly revealeth its potential. One beholdeth it and thinketh: “Ah. There it is. This is why men bothered to make it.” And then, naturally, it proceedeth to do something peculiar and thereby testeth the limits of my patience. Such is the eternal cycle. III. Of Its Construction and Craftsmanship Here I must speak with particular seriousness. For craftsmanship is a matter which ought never to be dismissed. Whether the object of our scrutiny be a work of art, a product of industry, a tale told by a travelling bard, or some mysterious creation whose purpose remaineth obscure even unto its makers, the manner in which it hath been constructed revealeth much concerning the minds responsible for it. And here, dear reader, there is much to admire. The details suggest deliberation. The choices, whilst not universally successful, demonstrate ambition. Indeed, ambition may be counted amongst its greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses alike. For it hath clearly desired to accomplish more than the ordinary. And whenever something seeketh to exceed the ordinary, it must inevitably risk becoming extraordinary in either the most glorious or the most unfortunate sense. There are portions wherein the workmanship seemeth almost excessive in its care. I examined these parts and declared: “Verily, these folk did not merely make a thing. They laboured upon it.” Yet elsewhere I encountered decisions so curious that I could scarce believe they survived the first gathering of the council. I imagine the scene thus: “Good sirs, what think ye of this?” “Aye, it is strange.” “Should we alter it?” “Nay.” “Why?” “Because we have already spent six months upon it.” And so the matter was settled. IV. Of Its Experience The experience of engaging with this thing is, in truth, difficult to describe with ordinary language. It possesseth rhythm. At times it moveth with grace, carrying the observer forward with such confidence that resistance seemeth foolish. At other times, however, it stumbleth. Not a small stumble, mind thee. Nay, the sort of stumble whereby a nobleman descending a staircase misjudgeth the final step and suddenly discovereth that dignity is a fragile illusion. Yet even these failures possess a peculiar charm. For perfection is oftentimes dull. A thing without flaws may be admirable, but a thing with flaws can become memorable. And this is, perhaps, the greatest compliment I can bestow: I shall remember it. I may remember certain portions with affection. I may remember others with the weary expression of a man recalling an argument he ought never to have entered. But I shall remember it. V. Of the Greater Failings Now must I unsheathe the sword of criticism.
