## What is Inkiostro?

Inkiostro is the Markdown editor that lets you focus on your ideas while providing all the tools to do it right.

Open, write, save. No subscriptions, no accounts, no tracking.

FORMULAS AND DIAGRAMS, RIGHT WHERE YOU WRITE
• LaTeX math with $ and $$, typeset by KaTeX — inline in a sentence or as a display block.
• Mermaid diagrams: a code block becomes a real flowchart, sequence or Gantt chart, drawn as you type.
• Everything renders live as you write, and carries over to every export.

TURN A NOTE INTO A FINISHED DOCUMENT
• PDF export with selectable text — formulas, diagrams and highlighted code included, never flattened into an image. The free version adds a small credit line in the page footer.
• HTML export: a single self-contained file that works offline, images and styles embedded. (Pro)
• EPUB export: a real ebook with a navigation table of contents, ready for Apple Books. (Pro)

WRITE THE WAY YOU LIKE
• Complete Markdown toolbar: headings, bold, italic, lists, tables and code blocks, one tap away.
• Smart tables with automatic pipe alignment as you type.
• 11 preview styles — GitHub, Dark, Sepia, Nord, Solarized, Terminal and more. All included, free.
• Find and replace, live word count, and a daily writing goal with no limits.
• Focus and Typewriter modes for immersive writing. (Pro)

YOUR FILES, YOUR RULES
• Unlimited documents. No cap, free or Pro.
• Import Markdown from any app and bring your whole library across.
• Color labels and custom tags, with filtering and grouping by tag.
• Native iCloud Drive sync between iPhone, iPad and Mac. Zero configuration.
• External folders: work directly inside any local or iCloud Drive folder. (Pro)

NEVER LOSE A DRAFT
• Version history: Inkiostro saves versions of your document while you write. Compare them line by line and restore any of them. (Pro)

### 5/5 — Bald besser als IA Writer

*2026-08-07*

### 1/5 — App does not render and crashes.

*2026-06-26*

The app does not render correctly markdown. Preview is not available or PDF export. App is not built out.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for your feedback; we’ve improved both Markdown rendering and PDF export. Thanks again.

### 5/5 — Guter Markdown Editor

*2026-06-26*

Lettera ist optisch ansprechend und ein guter Markdown Editor. Und es wird regelmäßig aktualisiert, Fehler behoben.
Ich kann Lettera empfehlen 👍

### 1/5 — How does this work?

*2026-06-23*

I installed. I tried to drag an MD file into it. Nothing happened. I tried to import an MD file into it. Nothing happened. Not sure how this is supposed to be used.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for your feedback; the missing features have been properly implemented in the latest version! Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

### 5/5 — Top

*2026-06-03*

Gefällt mir sehr gut. Optisch ansprechend, und hat alles was man braucht, für MD. UND: ein sehr guter Preis.
Meine Empfehlung.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.8.1 — 2026-08-26

Version history can now be searched. You remember writing a sentence — about a character, a decision, a name — and you remember deleting it. Until now the only way back was opening versions one at a time until you got lucky. Now you type the phrase and the history tells you which versions contain it, shows you the line in each one, and tells you the day it disappeared.

Comparisons are down to the word. Change one sentence inside a long paragraph and you used to get the whole paragraph in red beside the whole paragraph in green, left to spot the difference yourself. Now only what actually changed is highlighted, inside the line, where you can read it.

You can name a version and keep it. Call one "sent to my editor" and it stops ageing out — it stays as long as the document does, while everything around it prunes itself as usual.

You can put any two versions side by side, not just a version against what you have today. Last Tuesday against last month, if that's the question.

There's a line across the top of the history now, showing the document growing over time. It's the fastest way to find the day something big happened — the afternoon a chapter went in, or the morning it came out.

And long documents no longer defeat the comparison. Past roughly two thousand lines the old one gave up and showed the entire document as deleted and rewritten, which is worse than useless on exactly the files that matter most. That limit is gone.

The rest of this release:

• Your history can leave. Export it as a folder with one file per version, or as a single document with the versions one after another. It's the answer to a fair question — what happens to all this if I stop using the app.

• A panel of its own, under Settings. It shows how much space your history takes and across how many documents, lets you choose how long versions are kept, turns the word-by-word comparison off if you'd rather see whole lines, and can delete every history at once if you want the space back.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-08-20

Version history grew up. It used to offer one thing: put the whole document back the way it was. That is the right tool for a disaster and the wrong one for a Tuesday, when what you actually want is the paragraph you deleted this morning.

Now the history shows your changes one at a time, and each of them has its own button. Tap it and that change is undone — the deleted paragraph comes back, the rewritten sentence returns to how it read, and everything you did afterwards stays exactly where it is.

The screen around it changed too. Versions are grouped by day, so "this morning" is something you can find instead of counting backwards through timestamps. Each one says how much it changed before you open it. The unchanged text between one change and the next is folded away, because in a comparison what matters is what moved.

Restoring is no longer a one-way door: before anything is replaced, what you have right now is saved as a version. If you bring back the wrong paragraph, the paragraph you had is one tap away.

Versions also follow your document now. Rename it, move it to another folder, let the app rename it for you from its first heading — the history comes along. Before, it silently started over.

And the count is visible while you write: a small clock in the bar above the keyboard tells you how many versions you have. It was the strongest thing in the app and nobody knew it was there.

The rest of this release:

• Inkiostro is in the share sheet. Most writing starts somewhere else — a thought in Notes, a paragraph on a web page, a line in a scratchpad. Share it to Inkiostro and it becomes a document, with a title already filled in and the text ready to edit. Come back to the app and it is open, waiting.

• Tables, rebuilt. Pick the size by dragging across a grid instead of tapping two counters, and the table arrives with real headings already in place — type over the first, press Tab for the next. Tab keeps moving cell to cell and adds a row at the end, the columns realign as you type, and a Table menu adds or removes rows and columns and sets each column's alignment. The same engine on Mac, iPhone and iPad, so a table built on one reads right on the other.

• Steadier on iCloud. Every read, save, rename and delete now announces itself to iCloud before touching the file. Fewer documents that vanish for a moment, and no more quiet overwrites while a file is syncing.

• Inkiostro finally wears its own colours — the warm sand of the app's name, instead of the green it inherited from its old one. If you preferred the green, it is still here: Settings › Theme › Lettera Classic.

• Formatting floats right above the keyboard, where your thumbs already are. If you liked the old fixed bar, Settings › Editor › Formatting Bar puts it back.

• Show invisible characters. Proofreading a draft? Turn on invisible characters in Settings › Editor to spot extra spaces, tabs and paragraph breaks right on the page.

• Menus and buttons have been read through in all fourteen languages. A few of them said things nobody meant — in German the app offered to sell you a share instead of sharing your document.

### 1.7.3 — 2026-08-08

Start writing straight away: new documents open instantly and name themselves from your first heading.
Markdown formatting now shows up the moment a document opens, on every device.
The table of contents comes to iPhone and iPad.
Nested lists keep their indentation, tables behave under Tab, and you can format several lines at once.
Tags really group your documents, and filtering by tag no longer hides your folders.
Exported EPUB files carry their images, and exported HTML carries its font.

### 1.7.0 — 2026-08-06

Documents are unlimited now — for everyone. And you can try Pro before paying for it.

• Try Pro free for 14 days. No subscription and no payment: when it ends you go back to the free version, and your documents stay yours.
• No more 10-file limit. Write as much as you want, on the free version too.
• Import is free: bring your Markdown library over from any other app.
• The daily writing goal has no cap anymore.
• Version history (Pro): Inkiostro saves versions of your document while you write. Compare them line by line and restore any of them.
• Clearer names: the 11 preview styles are called "preview styles" and are all free. "Themes" now means only the look of the app.
• Inkiostro runs on iOS 18 and later, so it works on far more iPhones and iPads.
• New: a Markdown cheat sheet with 46 pieces of syntax always at hand — beside the editor on iPad, as a panel on iPhone.
• Four ways to see your files: large cards with a three-line preview of the text, cards, a two-line list or a compact list. Switch from the toolbar.
• Fixed: a few texts showed up in Italian no matter which language you use.

To everyone who bought Pro and supported this app: thank you. You made this version possible.

### 1.6.1 — 2026-07-23

Clearer purchases

• Restoring a purchase now tells you what happened, including when there's nothing to restore
