### 2/5 — App interface sucks

*2026-07-28, version 3.2.8*

A problem with this app is the fact that some bugs do occur for example there has been a problem when you click on lesson there is a hint that tells you that your able to swipe left and right to switch lesson. The hint is displayed right in the middle of the screen and will not go away even if you swipe between lesson it just keeps popping up. This app has so much potential it just needs to be improved a lot. I recommend using the website on a computer rather than using this app.

### 2/5 — Do not purchase if using the app

*2026-06-11, version 3.2.8*

Wonderful lessons genuinely. It’s a shame the app video player works so poorly. It had playback issues that allow it to continue playing forward without audio/skipping frames constantly necessitating that you rewind multiple times per few minute lesson. This is very irritating and makes both using it without the screen on, or with the offline mode virtually unusable.

### 2/5 — Needs Work

*2026-06-05*

1) privacy first. This app takes unnecessary data collection from its users and I’m against that.

2) I am glad this app exists and that there is something like this. It has some good ideas and useful content.

3) I came back to this app after many years, so I’m not sure if it has to do with my old account or not but the app no longer functions for me. After logging in, I can click one thing on the screen then the app does one of two things. It either starts buffing unendingly, or it opens up a page and completely freezes on that page.

4) Over all the app needs work, it also needs to be less invasive and more privacy focused. Other than that I think it has a lot of potential.

**Developer response:** Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're glad to hear you found value in the app and appreciate your comments regarding privacy and functionality. We never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties. Your data is used solely to personalize our services such as onboarding and to improve user experience.

We're especially concerned about the freezing and loading issues you described. If you're willing, please contact our support team with more details.

Thank you again for your feedback and for giving the app another try after all these years.

### 2/5 — Crashes too frequently

*2026-05-25*

Crashes every so often. I delete then reinstall, but then it occurs again a few weeks later. Need to fix the app so it doesn’t crash as often

**Developer response:** Hi,

Thank you for your patience. Were you able to capture logs for the crash?

### 3/5 — Please add flash cards to mobile app!

*2026-05-19, version 3.2.8*

Flash cards please

### 2/5 — Overpriced and constantly upselling

*2026-02-16, version 3.2.8*

I purchased a Premium subscription and am regretting it about a month in. The app isn’t nearly as full-featured as the website, despite paying a pretty high price for a premium subscription. If this was a new app, I would allow some slack for this failure, but JapanesePod101 has been around for more than a decade.

You can’t even study flash cards from the app… you can only add select words from the lessons, and new words introduced in the lessons aren’t always included in the vocabulary module, which is the only way to add words to the word bank.

Confused? Get ready for even more confusion and web searching just to figure out how to navigate and use this app. There’s a lot of promise in the content but the execution and user interface are so bad that you either can’t use basic language learning components like vocab or you’re stuck rehashing content you’ve already learned.

Oh, and the upsell is constant! From daily nag-mail touting limited time upgrades to in-app shills, Innovative is worse than the upsell I get every time I take my car for an oil change.

Since I’ve paid for a year upfront in the hopes of getting more structured ear-training, I’ll update this review if things get better or worse. But at this point, I’ve seen much better language-learning options for far less.

### 3/5 — Costs Money

*2026-02-10, version 3.2.8*

I don't know why or how but I expected to be able to have Japanese lessons for free. It's almost like joining a job a friend works at thinkin you will get extra pay. I enjoy the variety of languages but most of the features are not free. A lot of people who want to learn a language don't have much opportunity because so many apps and websites and teachers are costly but if you are looking for a bit of extension from JapanesePod101 then here you go.

### 3/5 — Pay for the best

*2026-02-04, version 3.2.8*

Really good but it’s very premium

### 2/5 — Not too many ads but you can only pick one language

*2026-01-17, version 3.2.8*

Which I’m disappointed about

### 2/5 — Kinda disappointing

*2026-01-07, version 3.2.8*

I downloaded thinking it would be great to have the one - on - one teacher but I was rlly disappointed with how much the subscription cost 😭

### 2/5 — Not user friendly

*2025-10-30, version 3.2.8*

Only using the app for Greek and it is just a random collection of lessons, there isn't a specific order to follow and it's not very clear where to start or how to progress through the curriculum. The lessons are all just listening to audio files, I haven't found any yet that are interactive.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — false advertising

*2026-06-12, version 3.2.8*

advertised $98 the charged me $195, then you have to guess which words in the sentence translate into what.

### 1/5 — Watch Out $$$

*2026-05-14, version 3.2.8*

They hide the automatic subscription. When you think you did not sign up for it, you did. When you find out they say you did and you ask for a refund one day after, no refund. Not a satisfied customer, like all others, they will rope you in with a trial and continue to up sell waiting for you to be “auto” re-subscribe just to get one more payment out of you. Likely, most people quit this and go to another service.

### 1/5 — Buggy

*2026-03-31, version 3.2.8*

Sets you up with no way to set a password. Attempting to contact support is impossible with the only option to check is frequently asked questions

### 1/5 — continually crashes

*2026-03-29, version 3.2.8*

content good but badly written app frequently crashes during lesson play. almost unusable

### 1/5 — App doesn’t work

*2026-02-27, version 3.2.8*

I can get to my dashboard after i log in but when i try to click on any lessons it just freezes and i cannot actually do anything on the app. I really hope this will
be fixed but from reviews it looks like an ongoing issue.

### 1/5 — Audio stops

*2026-02-05, version 3.2.8*

Before I review the app, let me say that Japanesepod101 is at least a four star service. But, that means very little when the app used to access it just stops playing audio in the middle of a lesson. This happens all the time, and I have to open my phone and find where I was and start over again. I have no such issues with any other streaming service on my iPhone. Since I prefer listening to the lessons while walking instead of on my desktop (where it works fine) this makes it not worth my time, and therefore not worth the amount I spent for a premium subscription. I’ll put my dollars elsewhere next time.

### 1/5 — App crashing

*2026-01-09, version 3.2.8*

App constantly crashes without giving a reason. It’s been almost a year and this bug is still occurring with no fix. Will be canceling

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2025-11-16, version 3.2.8*

App opens but freezes every time I try to open a lesson.

### 1/5 — Offline doesn’t work.

*2025-10-22*

After downloading contents and try to listen from the offline menu. It says unable to connect, please check your internet connection. Why it’s called offline?

### 1/5 — App keeps freezing and I just downloaded it!

*2025-06-03, version 3.2.6*

Installed and reinstalled like 4 times and it still crashes everytime I click the lessons. Ridiculous!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Both browser and app are good (iPhone user)

*2026-06-09, version 3.2.8*

The main thing I like about the app, is that I can save the downloads directly to files without it being saved on the phone first, like when using IOS-Chrome. Also, you can minimize the app and the audio still plays.
With the browser, I can organize my thoughts better.

### 5/5 — Love learning Thai

*2026-05-30, version 3.2.8*

Ive been using to learn to and I love every bit of thaipod101. It explains every vocabulary and the context behind it, and there are so many good lessons to choose from.

### 5/5 — So far so good.

*2026-03-01, version 3.2.8*

Only one issue so far on my second assessment they asked me questions from the next set of lessons so it was impossible to answer them. I was asked questions about where is the bathroom (you don’t learn that til after this assessment) Other than that it’s great.

### 5/5 — Innovative language learning

*2026-02-20, version 3.2.8*

very helpful and informative

### 5/5 — Really helpful and simple to use…

*2026-02-19, version 3.2.8*

I had been using Duolingo to learn Indonesian for a while and found it difficult to understand differences between formal and informal words and sentences. I switched to IndonesiaPod101 only a few days ago and feel like I’ve learned more in that time than in months using Duolingo.

### 5/5 — DOWNLOAD THIS APP TO LEARN

*2026-02-14, version 3.2.8*

If you’re one of those people that get overwhelmed with all the different combinations of words in Spanish, download this app.

Lessons are structured and easy to follow ..
