So I thought this app would be good to reduce the cost of my insurance. After I was driving for a while, I got an email saying that my driving needs to improve because I am worse than 80% of the drivers on the road in Alberta. It said that if I didn’t improve, my cost of insurance would rise once I go back to renew it. I investigated this and found that I had numerous cell phone infractions for distracted driving and for speeding. so I thought OK - I can control the speeding. I will decrease my speed down to no more than 3 km an hour over the speed limit using cruise control, which allows me a little bit of leeway when I’m trying to drive the speed limit. I also parked my phone in a holder so that it didn’t move around or didn’t get touched while I was driving. However, my next report showed that I still was speeding too frequently and still had too many distracted driving infractions. Again - the threat of increased insurance costs. What I found was that the app will track your speed and if you’re even 1 km an hour over the speed limit you’ll get tagged within the app for speeding. It also doesn’t recognize a difference between when I’m driving my car and when I’m driving in somebody else’s car as a passenger, I get dinged either way. The app isn’t watching you - it’s detecting movement of the phone, and it’s detecting the speed of the phone. So it’s tracking those things in real time whether or not it’s you using the phone or whether you’re in somebody else’s car. With respect to distracted driving, putting the phone away so that it’s not touched at all during the drive didn’t seem to make any difference. I still had numerous distracted driving infractions. So if my wife uses the phone or if the phone adjusts its location on my seat while I’m driving, it’s considered distracted driving. I would like to know why the amounts are different from what I was originally told. I am very concerned about these unexpected charges and I need a clear explanation.
