Still, it’s useful but a little odd to charge for something this limited. You think that might be the intro or help pages but it’s actually the whole app! I guess he is a famous dialogue coach and the app covers complex aspects of IPA, but it is really an almost trivial ‘app’ ### 2/5 — Crashing *2019-06-09* Used to work well; useful little tool. Recently it’s crashing every time I try to access a sound though. I guess if I knew that I wouldn’t need the app. ### 2/5 — Not the best *2016-02-08* Unfortunately the sounds on this app are not true to the correct pronunciation. The speaker has an Americanized way of pronouncing the letters. For instance the "t" (alveoral plosive) is pronounced in an American type way, which is not the correct way to pronounce it. He pronounces it as the "th" aveoral plosive should be pronounced. I recommend skipping this one and getting the IPA Phonetics instead, which also has videos showing the pronunciation and tongue placement, and is much more correct than this app. ### 2/5 — No sound *2014-11-22* As a linguist I go this app to show my students correct pronunciation of English phonemes although upon purchasing the app I noticed that the sound did not work. I would click on the buttons but no noise would be made. Disappointing. ### 3/5 — Not quite what I was hoping for *2014-09-01* As a speech-language pathology student, I am taking phonetics and thought this app would help me with that course. My biggest disappointment with this app is that I have to have the headphones in to hear any sound (when I take the headphones out I turn the sound all the way up and cannot hear a thing). Even with the headphones in and the sound turned all the way up it is still not very loud. To me this app would be more useful if it included examples of words for each phoneme. ### 5/5 — awesome! *2014-08-23* This is such a wonderful resource. I look forward to telling my students about it. ### 5/5 — Very helpful App *2014-08-22* I am a voice, speech, and accent trainer that is quite rigorous with my college students when it comes to their understanding of phonetics. As the long-serving Director of Technology for VASTA (the Voice & Speech Trainers Association), I have always been happy to incorporate technology into my teaching. Of all the phonetics apps I have examined, this is the most inclusive of the many sounds and notations that make up the entirety of the International Phonetics Alphabet chart. It is extremely helpful for students of phonetics to learn the relation between the symbols and the sounds they represent. Though other reviewers have complained about sound issues, I have never had any type of issue. Quite easy to use and handy for a quick pronunciation check. ### 5/5 — Great tool for actors, accent coaches, directors, etc.! *2014-08-21* This app by noted dialect/accent/Original Pronunciation and Shakespeare guru Paul Meier, fills a huge void-it’s the best and frankly, the only quality resource for this material on the iTunes store and I’ve used most of the other apps of this kind. It’s an essential tool for those requiring a portable reference of this material. The detailed presentation of all areas of the standard IPA chart is top-notch. An added bonus is the ability to compare British and American English in the diphthong section and the extensive presentation of diacritics-a critical feature in IPA transcription. There are many other resources by Paul on iTunes for actors/directors/coaches, etc., interested in dialects and accents of English. Do yourself a favor and check them out! ### 5/5 — Great App! *2014-08-20* I was reluctant to buy this since I read a couple of comments that said the sound was unplayable. But I gave it a try. It worked perfectly for me! Maybe the other buyers tried playing it on their computer. I tried that first until I remembered this type of app works only for iPhone and iPad. This does not give me confidence in the consistency of other elements with the IPA, which is disappointing for a paid app. ### 1/5 — No sound? *2020-03-30* I’m on iOS 13 and there is no sound coming out when I’m on this app. I love everything about it except the fact that I can’t hear the pronunciation of the sounds. Worth the $3.99. And I’ve tried most of the apps on itunes regarding IPA. The phonetic charts are user friendly and provide my students with clear examples of the associated sounds. Whether you are a student of voice and speech, linguistics or an actor, this app will help you understand the phonetic alphabet in al its detail. A great app. ### 5/5 — Amazingly comprehensive IPA tool *2014-09-21* The best $3.99 I've spent in a long time! Paul Meier's Interactive IPA app is exactly what it says it is. Every chart created by the International Phonetic Association is comprehensively covered, with an audio file for every phoneme, diacritic, and suprasegmental--plus there's an added diph/triphthong chart for both American and UK pronunciations (just click on the flag for the chart to turn from one to the other). For actors in dialect/accent training as well as students in linguistics or SLP studies, this is an incredible tool to have ready at all times at their fingertips. My dialect and speech students love it and rely upon it for their transcription work. Well done! ### 5/5 — Interactive IPA *2014-09-18* I have just purchased a copy of Paul Meier's "Interactive IPA" for my iPhone. I have been looking for a simple, easy and accessible app for my students in the Postgraduate Diploma of Voice studies which I run at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Whilst the students will not need all the linguistic information available on the app, it will enable them to hear and practise the sounds very easily. I particularly like the vowel charts which have both visual and aural representation. My postgrad students need to familiarise themselves with the IPA before they start the course, so this will be immensely useful. ### 5/5 — Very Useful *2014-09-08* This is a well-constructed app - the mechanics of the app work quite well, just as I would hope, and the layout is useful and thought out. Paul is, deservedly, very well respected in the world of dialects for actors, so he is a very logical person to put together an app like this. He even goes into diphthongs and triphthongs, which are not included in the IPA's materials. You might find that you use some slight variations on the symbols he uses for these, but even if you do, it's still clear and very helpful. I'm telling my acting students about it! It's great for them to have this resource in their pockets; I'll be using it, too! ### 5/5 — Thank you thank you for this terrific app! *2014-09-02* Once again, Paul Meier has offered Voice professionals and students an accessible, clear tool to assist in the study of dialects. Even though I do not earn my keep as a voice actor or artist, the small amount of work I have done in this field give me the ability to truly appreciate what a remarkable tool the Interactive IPA is. The variances in how we orally express our thoughts and communications is fascinating when we study and contemplate them beyond simply noticing a different accent or dialect.
