### 3/5 — Eraser dont wok

*2020-06-25, version 3.3*

Please fix eraser and then it will be a great app otherwise useless

### 3/5 — Eraser doesn’t work!

*2019-04-04, version 3.0*

It has been interesting following the tutorials but the app has a major flaw in that the erase function doesn’t work at all. Please
Fix this!

### 3/5 — Eraser doesn’t work

*2019-01-16, version 3.0*

This is a great app, and it helps me draw and expand my capabilities, the only drawback being I can’t erase any mistakes I made which is really annoying. Would’ve given it 5 stars without this mistake.
Hopefully they fix this error

### 3/5 — Good, but....

*2018-01-19, version 2.91*

There is no support! I can draw 30 to 60 seconds at a time before the app crashes. And no help to be found.
Otherwise, it is a fun drawing app with tools that fell much like pencils. The only other tool I would suggest would be a smudge stick.

### 2/5 — could do better :-/

*2016-11-20, version 2.81*

it would be a lot better if we could simply draw with our hands like with all the other apps, as well as with just about any stylus, not just with Apple Pencil and/or not only with blue tooth stylus. 😐

### 4/5 — I like it BUT can’t wait for improvement.

*2016-09-01, version 2.81*

I like this app as I am a sketchbook artist and it looks like a sketchbook. Sometimes the eraser didn’t work so hope they fix this and maybe have some undo’s.
Also would love a pen choice and not just pencils. Charcoal also. Needs more drawing tools.
But I am using it a lot.

### 3/5 — Great potential

*2016-08-30*

With a few updates, this could be very interesting and useful. It needs some color and layer options. The split screen for drawing is nice, But needs more features and as someone else mentioned, the eraser needs to be fixed. I don't know how the tutorial aspect could be fixed up, but that would be good. There really does not seem to be many drawing apps to teach drawing, but this is one of the best i have seen in that genre.

### 3/5 — Eraser is broken

*2016-07-23, version 2.81*

Eraser broken on iPad Pro. Makes sketching hard. More than 4 tutorials would be nice.

### 2/5 — Just one problem

*2016-07-09, version 2.80*

When going into trace a portion of your sketch over a picture it stops allowing you to zoom or unzoom after starting to sketch over the pic. This is really annoying. Then I have to go back out to a two pg mode and then go back into one pg mode. I usually just draw a pic in side by side mode but when trying to get exact this is an annoyance. This just started after the this last update or I would have gave the app five stars

### 2/5 — Crash after crash

*2016-03-20, version 2.60*

Sad to work so hard on first 2 projects only to have app crash before saved. 😢

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Crashes constantly

*2019-10-12, version 3.1*

Needed a sketchbook on my iPad and loved the features this has listed. So paid the $4.99 for it and EVERY time I try to change the pencil or look for eraser, the app crashes on me!! They need to get this fixed ASAP .

### 1/5 — Waste of money

*2019-02-12, version 3.0*

Doesn’t work. I paid $5 for the cover of a sketch book. The app doesn’t move beyond the cover

### 1/5 — Erase doesn’t work

*2018-07-15, version 2.94*

Eraser doesn’t work on 2018 iPad with pencil or finger.

### 1/5 — Apple Pencil does not work well with this app

*2018-06-29, version 2.94*

Apple Pencil will not erase

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work!

*2018-06-10, version 2.94*

Unable to erase with Apple Pencil or finger

### 1/5 — does not work

*2017-12-02, version 2.90*

tutorials will not work on ipad pro. they open. but will not respond to apple pencil or finger for drawing.

### 1/5 — Erase doesn't work!!!

*2017-03-26, version 2.81*

I am VERY disappointed after spending this much on an app that it doesn't work. Wish I could get my money back!!!!!!

### 1/5 — Current version NOT updating iPad Pro iOS 9.3.2

*2016-07-14, version 2.81*

See above.

### 1/5 — Sketchbook

*2016-06-26, version 2.80*

This is the biggest waste if money I have ever seen. Do not blow you $5.00. Acts more like a preschool toy. Non responsive can not get the pencil to have a thinner line even on detail setting. Do not bother with this one, keep looking I am sure there will be someone who will put out a usable app.

### 1/5 — Crashes constantly!

*2016-04-10, version 2.60*

I really like how this app works when it works, but if you are in the middle of a drawing, and the app crashes (which it does a lot!), you lose everything you were working on. It's very frustrating if you have been working on something for like 15-30 minutes and then lose all that time because it doesn't save and crashes. Frustrating and not worth it!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great for illustrating from reference!

*2026-07-28*

Fantastic update with the addition of toned papers and reference grids! 😃

Interactive Sketchbook is my go-to app for drawing pencil portraits from reference, and this update makes it so much nicer!

### 5/5 — Wow! Awesome update!

*2026-07-28*

I got Interactive Sketchbook for my iPad a couple years ago- and use it all the time. There really isn't anything like it out there, and it's the greatest place to keep all my visual ideas and sharpen my drawing skills.

I saw there was a new update and- Holy cow! It is so much more user friendly, and the responsiveness is crazy! The new tone paper is so awesome to work with, and I especially like the flexibility of grids and being about to easily rotate your art and reference from either side! Fantastic!

The Matt Busch tutorials are pretty rad. Works perfect on the iPad, updating on my iPhone as well! Thanks, Digital Wave!

### 5/5 — My favorite sketching app

*2025-12-23, version 3.3.1*

It is my favorite sketching app by far and it has been for many years. The app is simple but delivers second to none drawing experience. The closest experience you can get when drawing with a pencil.

### 5/5 — I love it.

*2021-02-21, version 3.3*

It feels exactly like how I draw on my 3DS XL except I can get in with more detail. Works way better with a stylus. I think it would thrive if you guys added in colored pencils. Other than that, 20/10 would highly and definitely recommend if you’re more of a traditional artist like me.

### 5/5 — Great for practice

*2019-06-04, version 3.1*

The side-by-side view makes this app great for practicing portraits or doing figure drawing from reference. I’ve never seen another app like it.

It was good when I got it, and each update since has polished the drawing experience even more.

### 5/5 — Unlocked imagination!

*2018-06-25*

No other app I have tried (about 12 different once) gave me the confidence and step by step structure to make me believe that I am capable to draw something other than a stick figure.

This app took intimidation out of drawing and in a step by step fashion I was able to see a portrait come together... my wife did not believe I did it, but thanks to the replay feature that literally animates all the strokes you took while drawing she saw it... kind of took the magic out of it a bit ;) but she was impressed that I could draw.

Too many cool features to list, do yourself a favor able buy it, most negative reviews are from long time ago when Apple Pencil support was not as good, works amazingly well for the last 2 years.

### 5/5 — This app is excellent / Crash issue fixed

*2018-05-01*

First, the latest update fixed the crash issue and now I have no more problem with the app crashing in the middle of my work. Second I am new to drawing and sketching so this app is helping me learn. I am so pleased with the tools and the computer aspect of drawing that I feel very confident going forward I can learn to sketch like I always wanted to. I would very much recommend this app to anybody who wants to learn how to draw.

Previous: While certain aspects of this app are outstanding, I cannot give it more than one star because it crashes all too frequently. You can imagine being in the middle of a sketch and before you get a chance to save, the app just quits. I have lost so much work on some sketches, that I have to quit using this app because it is completely unreliable. If the developers fix this problem with crashing I will revisit this app and review. But for now it gets one star and pushed to the last page of my iPad, where I will forget about it until it’s fixed.

### 5/5 — Great learn to draw app

*2018-01-28*

There seems to be very few learn to draw apps, I’m glad I found this one. ***Really hoping they include more pictures to copy, maybe landscapes would be good***. You can learn to draw on your iPad with this app - then use those skills to draw on paper/canvas. I haven’t found another app like this

### 5/5 — Thanks for the improvements

*2018-01-26*

Using this great app once again now the lagging and crashing issues are sorted out.
So much better, thank you.

I’d really, really like to be able to use a tinted background if that's at all possible, say mid grey or sand.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2017-06-13*

If you are looking for an iPad app that is designed from the bottom up and from inside out to help you learn to draw, this is the one for you! It is in active development and getting better all the time, and its unique interactive approach is refreshingly well thought out and very helpful. I've been a professional artist for over 40 years, and bought this app for my "girlfriend," who has been wanting to learn to draw for some time (NOT from me!), but never could find the right kind of help. She'd start something, but quickly become frustrated by her slow progress and soon give up. So I bought this app and turned my iPad over to her... and she didn't come up for air for HOURS. Her progress was immediate and significant--so much so that it now looks like I'm going to have to buy her an iPad of her own.

Of course the app isn't perfect: there are some design issues that are still being worked out and it really needs an even more thoroughly developed help system for newbies, but right now it is a great buy and worth much more than is being asked.

If you want to learn to draw (faces), get this app. You'll not be disappointed!
