When I miss one I find myself wanting to hear it again so that I can train my ear properly. ### 4/5 — Almost excellent *2019-11-22* Great app - quite addictive. Really does train your ear. One minor tweak needed. The root note keeps changing which is good, but please give the option of keeping to a given root. Would be good for beginners. Keep up the great work Justin! ### 4/5 — Amazing but One Important Problem! *2019-11-04* I really love this app..this is amazing and a necessity for my training. I can’t thank you enough. However there is one problem, on the descending 4th and 5th intervals I think it is wrong. If the starting note is on the 5th fret, 4th string...the 4th interval should be on the 3 fret, 3 string... while the 5th should be the 5th fret, 3 string. I think it is wrong on the app and opposite. Please fix this if it is broken, because it will screw up people’s hearing in the future. ### 3/5 — it's good but could use some tweaks *2018-10-23* when using the guitar interface I thought I was identifying Generic intervals so when it went to descending notes I was tatally thrown. until that is I used the piano interface and realised there's a bit more to it. You have to go to the Justin Guitar website or a different source to learn about major and minor intervals in order to use this app properly plus if there was a way to keep the root on the same note it would help to get a handle on it. especially since some of us have some hearing loss at higher or lower frequencies. ### 4/5 — Tip for beginner ears *2018-10-06* As i was finding this app difficult at first since it changes key with every question, i found if you take your guitar and find the interval on the fret board and compare it to the surrounding intervals to really hear the difference in pitches, this has been an amazing way to kill multiple birds with one stone, you familiarize yourself with the fretboard, understand scale construction and of course train your ear. ### 4/5 — Functional with glitches and missing feature *2018-06-21* It does work. At times however it does not respond to touch input to select an interval. The Back button still works. Annoying. Wish it had an automatic mode where it played interval then told answer after a few seconds. Could use this while driving or before falling asleep. It was working - except you can’t ster. Back when you make a mistake to see where you went wrong. It automatically passes straight to the next interval. Now the Ear trainer doesn’t work at all on Apple devices Apple puts up a message : “ Contact the developper to update this app to work with iOS11 (Apple’s latest syst em upgrade). I gladly pay for apps, but this was just a donation that turns me away from Justin Guitar. Wasted time trying to figure it out, text information is bad. Video was worse! ### 1/5 — Terrible instructions. Don’t waste you money. *2021-04-05* Absolutely no idea how to use this app. The instructions are absolutely useless. They send you off to one of Justin’s links on the internet with absolutely zero reference on how to use the app. ### 1/5 — Good Idea, Poorly Designed *2020-05-21* Some may find use in this app, but as a novice I think it’s too difficult and it only gets harder. After almost every question, it switches up the key and octave. There is no option to limit keys or octaves. This confused me. After using the app for 12 hours, I was convinced that I was tone deaf. Level one (easiest) starts off by playing a root note then another note and asks you to guess the second note played, which is either a perfect fourth or fifth. Those are, in my opinion, the two hardest notes to identify in the major scale because they’re the furthest notes from the roots. It should have started off with R, 2, 3, 6, 7, Octave all in one key; instead it does exactly the opposite of this. I have a few other gripes as well, but if these two problems were fixed I probably would have been satisfied with my purchase. I downloaded another app which was free and it’s infinitely better. It starts off in C major with options for R, 2, 3, & 4. I learned more in 10 minutes with that app than I did in a week with this one. Turns out I’m not dumb, this app is. The only person who would benefit from this is someone with a great ear or a masochist. Unfortunately I do not have a great ear which is why I bought this app in the first place. It’s too bad, I really wanted to like it, but for my purposes it’s totally useless. If anyone is interested the other app is called Functional Ear Trainer. I’ve only used this app to practice three intervals at the time of this review - namely, the octave, perfect fifth, and perfect fourth. It helped me pass Justin’s ear training test by increasing my score from around 75% to 95%, and that score difference is indicative of how much my ear skills have improved. You could record yourself playing different intervals and use those recordings to train your ears, but this app makes that process much easier and significantly more convenient; I can open it up, practice for just five minutes, and improve my skills instead of having to deal with the UI of a recording app and figuring out a system that tells me whether I’m right or wrong when guessing a note only after I guess and not before (for example, by the title of a recording indicating the interval being played). All of that is to say that this app makes ear training much easier and is quite cheap for what it offers, along with the fact that the money spent on it would support Justin and all the free videos he puts out online for learning guitar. If you can, I highly recommend buying it. ### 5/5 — Phenomenal app. *2021-12-21* Interval training at will and on the go without the need for an instrument. The ability to customize your own training regimen allows you to focus on specific problem areas. The app is a bargain for the price, same as almost anything Justin offers on his website. If you are looking for a serious and easy to use ear training app this one is for you. ### 5/5 — Read this if you need help! *2020-09-23* When I initially opened the app I was confused on what to do. (I’m a slow minded individual lol) Here’s how to work the app- Level 1: Begin on the screen with the fretboard. Play the sound and decide if it’s a 4th or 5th interval. Choose your answer by either selecting the 4 or 5. If you picked correctly the button will turn green. If incorrect it will flash red. Eventually, once you answer enough correctly it will move you on to the next level. I highly recommend going over to Justin guitars website and learning ear training before attempting this. It is a frustrating and rewarding experience to learn! 🙂 I’ve only gone up to the second level but I will update if anything changes on the app. Have a wonderful day! -Viv ### 5/5 — Handy little app *2019-09-09, version 2.11* Yes, this works well. Great to do five minutes here, 10 minutes there when you’ve got some downtime or you’re waiting for someone. All those minutes accumulate and before you know it, your ear will be trained. So handy.
