## What is ioLight Microscope?

Displays and captures beautiful images and videos from the ioLight high resolution portable microscope.

Laboratory microscopes produce beautiful images, but cost over £3,000 and are difficult to use. Cheap microscopes do not have enough resolution for professional use or teaching. ioLight has developed a digital microscope, with a resolution of better than 1μm, which produces beautiful pictures of animal and plant cells and displays them directly onto your tablet or mobile phone.

The ioLight microscope has worldwide patents pending.

Please go to iolight.co.uk to buy your high resolution portable microscope. Follow us on social media, @iolightmicro

### 1/5 — TERRIBLE

*2020-12-14*

It told me wrong internet, never knew internet had a right or wrong 😑

**Developer response:** Hi Micah,
This app only works with an ioLight microscope which you can purchase from iolight.co.uk.

The app is told you you have the wrong internet because your device is not connected to an ioLight microscope and so the app can't work

### 1/5 — WHIE

*2020-09-07*

I thought you could just use it. |-~-|
You need a device.

**Developer response:** Yes, this app is for the ioLight microscope, and so the app doesn't do anything unless you have a microscope!
You can buy a microscope from ioLight.co.uk

### 1/5 — Horrible

*2020-06-23*

The app said that I was connected to the wrong internet. Not you buissniss what my WiFi is.

**Developer response:** Dear Skinny,
This app controls the ioLight microscope - you need an ioLight microscope to use this app. You can buy an ioLight microscope from iolight.co.uk, and when you have a microscope to will see that the excellent images offered by the ioLight microscope.

The app controls the microscope via a direct WiFi connection from your device to the microscope, so the app tells you that you are connected to the wrong WiFi because your device is not connected to an ioLight microscope and therefore the app can't work.

### 1/5 — Can’t just download app

*2020-02-21*

Requires you to buy the microscope first which you connect to with your device

### 2/5 — Need Device

*2019-09-26*

You need to have some separate device to use this app, which is disappointing but made quite apparent. If I knew maybe where to get the device that synchs with this app, I’d use it.

### 4/5 — Why

*2018-10-05*

It’s ok not the best app but it’s good

### 1/5 — Idk?!

*2018-08-01*

Not sure how to get past the opening page

### 1/5 — Confused

*2018-07-26*

What the heck is this?! I don’t get the beginning!

### 1/5 — DON'T GET THIS APP

*2017-09-29*

It's so terrible I'm at a loss for word. That's it. It's that bad.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.9 — 2026-03-10

Updated QR code for support and install documentation

### 1.8 — 2026-02-26

Change onboarding screens to allow connection of microscope using ethernet

### 1.7 — 2025-08-26

We've fixed an issue related to timeouts experienced by some users during timelapse, and we've change the behaviour at the end of timelapses so that lights remain off until the end of the timelapse is acknowledged by the user.

### 1.6 — 2024-04-03

This update adds time-lapse imaging which enables the ioLight microscope to record images over the course of hours or days, which is really useful for studying cell development amongst other applications.

Z-Stack imaging is also added. This feature enables a sequence of 9 images at different focus positions to be automatically recorded. These 9 images can then be ‘stacked’ into a single image composed of the in-focus parts of each image by using third party software such as ImageJ, Photoshop or Helicon Focus. Z-Stack image sets can be recorded both on taking a still image or time-lapse by holding the still image or time-lapse buttons.

The image grid can now be set to a range of values suitable for different ioLight microscopes. The grid will be stored on the saved image.

The image file names have been changed to include date, time and (for Z-stack) focus position. This makes it easier to keep track of images and enables time-lapse and time-lapse Z-stack image sets to be easily imported into ImageJ.

### 1.5 — 2019-11-13

Added support for iOS 13.
