Please keep the original version available. ### 4/5 — Stick to this version *2024-09-08, version 1.1.62* This version appears to still work, while from what I can tell “iOverlander 2” is nearly unusable adware without a costly subscription. I’ll stick to this one until it breaks, then use another app (or my eyes and brain) to find camping and stores. Sad. ### 2/5 — Free version unusable *2024-07-24* I get that they wanna pressure people to use paid. I get that they’re maybe gonna show me some ads if I don’t pay, although personally I prefer the model where basic features are free and the rest are locked behind the paywall. But this free version is one of those ones that interrupts your browsing to show you a full screen ad every ten seconds, effectively making it impossible to use the app at all unless you pay them to take the ads away. There are like a million competitor apps that I can actually use for free, deleted this one so fast. **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. The decision to offer a paid subscription was out of necessity to sustain iOverlander. We wish we could remain completely free forever, but after 10 years of attempting to run iOverlander that way, we know it is not possible. There are definitely some areas of growth pertaining to the user interface. One thing I’d love to see is “Favorites” added to the app. It’s available on the desktop/online web version but as far as I’ve seen is that it is not available in the app. Also wish there was a filter to only show sites which have photos uploaded. This is very useful as I usually will not consider spots in which I cannot see the view or the space. Other than some features and user interface changes, this app is fantastic for discovering places. Wish more people would use it so that everyone could see more up-to-date reviews/photos. Thank you for the app! ### 3/5 — Kinda buggy for iOS? *2024-05-21, version 1.1.50* I do appreciate the information found here that’s not on my other apps but the other day I tried to copy/paste the GPS coordinates to put in my mapping software and I couldn’t do it. It was super frustrating as I was fighting sunset and had no one to write it down and zero brain power at that time of day to memorize it. Every time I clicked on the coordinates they just changed format and there was no ability to copy. For this reason alone I’m ditching the app for the time being. ### 3/5 — Stopped working in IOS *2024-05-11, version 1.1.50* Recently stopped working on my iPhone and iPad. If I uninstall and reinstall it will run once but then immediately crash on running anytime after that. App hasn’t been updated in 2 years so not expecting much to change. ### 2/5 — Needs ability to upload pictures *2024-03-24, version 1.1.50* This app needs the ability to upload pictures for the sites. Because so many people are uploading random pull offs with 3 sentence descriptions, it is very challenging to determine if the site is appropriate for your rig. This could be improved by allowing pictures of the local to be uploaded. Next, there is no favorites list, so you can’t easily/intuitively click “save” or “like” and then sort by those locations. Some easy improvements that would make the app much better. ### 3/5 — It could be better *2024-03-21, version 1.1.50* The app leaves spots that have been “marked as closed” and it’s frustrating trying to find a spot when all that shows up is all the closed ones. DELETE THE ONES THAT ARENT AVAILABLE. Or have a button to select if you want to see the or not. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — This was alright *2025-02-23, version 1.1.62* They didn’t maintain it or address problems. The new one strips away most features and when you download it there is nothing. The only way is to subscribe in order to pay the developer for a service that has been poorly maintained. There are far better free and paid options. Be advised, issues will go unaddressed as they have been since I started trying to use this in 2021. ### 1/5 — Now worthless *2024-12-11, version 1.1.62* This app used to be good but now they’ve made it impossible to work with data that we the community added. Don’t use it. ### 1/5 — Dishonest developer removes reviews *2024-11-02, version 1.1.62* Along with breaking the app so Apple Maps that are downloaded no longer work offline, he deletes reviews suggesting alternative apps that are ethical. 👎 ### 1/5 — Disappointed *2024-10-31* Countless hours spent adding locations and writing detailed reviews, only to now face a subscription fee to access the very information I and thousands of others contributed for free. It’s disappointing to see a community-built resource turned into a paid service. Michaela then offers me one year free. Update: "I appreciate the offer, but I’m frustrated that my contributions—and those of countless other users—are now behind a paywall. I’ve put in time and effort to build this resource for the community, not for a subscription model. If iOverlander is moving to paid access, I think it’s only fair to honor contributors with permanent access instead of a limited free upgrade. **Developer response:** Hi, I am really sorry that you are disappointed. As soon as we finished, we will announce it. ### 1/5 — disappointed. *2024-10-16* sad to see they’ve released a paid version of this app where EVERY basic feature is now behind a paywall and you’re bombarded by constant ads. especially when users are the ones who were submitting all of the spots for them to now profit off of. i’m glad i kept my better spots to myself, instead of listing them for the developers to then lock them behind a paywall for others. gross and greedy tbh. wdym i have to pay $100+ to be able to download all of the states at once 😒 i’ll keep using the basic version until it breaks, and then i’ll find another app that offers those basic features for free. very disappointed in the developers of this app. do better. **Developer response:** Hi Atlascrust, already replied on your review for our version 2. We try to keep our Legacy App as long as possible, feel free to use it. ### 1/5 — Add ability to select a location *2024-08-27, version 1.1.61* For those of us who shun location services on our devices there needs to be another way to select an area to research. Also, in every case where I use an app like this it is never where I am that I’m interested in but somewhere else that I want to travel to. So my current location is completely irrelevant. I want to know about my new location in advance. I don’t want to wait until I get there to browse the possible locations I might be able to stay. Since the app starts out demanding my location and sends me over to settings to turn on location services, which I am never going to do, the app becomes useless. ### 1/5 — Demands your location *2024-06-17, version 1.1.50* I wanted to just browse to see if this is a useful app for me. This app demands I give it access to my location and refuses to allow me to browse the app without giving it access to my location. I am very picky about what apps I let track me. ### 1/5 — Almost everything is closed or for boondocking *2024-03-15, version 1.1.50* Almost every wild camping spot I’ve seen on this app is a parking lot, not wild camping. If anything should be labeled stealth camping (boondocking) and not wild camping. Also they all are marked as closed or illegal to camp there. Used this site in 2019 and thought it was great, now not very helpful. ### 1/5 — They Force You To Share Your Location *2024-02-18, version 1.1.50* Okay, so Campendium, Chargepoint, Volta, Plugshare, Blink, Tesla, SpotAngels, and like 5 others all don’t require an account OR your location to be able to use their app. I don’t recommend using any app that requires your data to use. The new version is less user friendly and harder to read. Recommend skipping and stick with this one. ### 5/5 — Great app, sad it's leaving *2024-11-29* This app has served me very well. I love that I could contribute to it on a personal level, pinning different sites and seeing other people's ratings. I've been led to some fantastic views thanks to this, and gone to sites few people even knew existed. I love the layout of the app. Simple, straightforward, and the filter function is very easy to use. Viewing other people's pins and seeing their reviews was always helpful. I don't remember if I paid for the app or not, but if I did it was worth it, and if I didn't I would have been willing to. The UI could use some refining, but it does have that old school early internet nav feel that is very cute and welcoming. I'm so disappointed this app is being retired. Wish the owner would reconsider. Maybe their 2.0 version can help fund this one? Or maybe charge a one-time fee for this app? I don't know, I just really don't want to lose this app. The platform it's built up is like no other. Our Legacy App never had the possibility to rate places nor to pin different sites. But you are right, we have a new App, iOverlander2 which we launched a few months ago. Maybe you want to give it a try? You can add favorites, choose from 5 different map styles, use offline maps. Sadly, it is not possible to keep our old app running forever.
