### 2/5 — Hard to read

*2026-08-08, version 2.6.40*

I tried the app. I’m a senior citizen with weak eyes. Couldn’t read even with reading glasses. Fonts stay extremely small even when zooming. Some names seem to disappear when zooming in.

### 3/5 — Great app, kinda…

*2026-08-01, version 2.6.38*

I find this app 10x more useful than the many “free” camping apps I’ve downloaded before. As a full timer, a lot of these hidden gems are better than paid campgrounds and state parks. Sites are reviewed more often and more recently too, giving me peace of mind that I won’t waste gas hunting out a dead location. So thanks to the community for that!

As for the app, it’s a mess!!! Favorites list never populates. I have to zoom in on the map and look for the hearts. I paid for annual unlimited, but having to download everything à la carte seems counterintuitive. A lot of the features are just buggy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. And I don’t like the lack of privacy. I have a very unique name and a very public online profile and now I’m hesitant to leave any kind of review out update for fear of someone noticing it’s me.

Still a staple for a full time nomad but I hate having to muddle through the mess. As a developer myself, I know for a fact it wouldn’t take too much effort to fix the UI features at least. Even Claude can vibe code something a bit more functional than this 🫤

### 3/5 — Great Info/Horrendous Interface

*2026-07-25, version 2.6.38*

The campsite and information in this App is awesome. The real issue is the map. For example, I’m in the Yukon and cities/towns are few and far between. The only way to find a town is to zoom all the way in and scroll down the road until you find the town you are looking for. It’s exhausting. Bigger labels when you are looking at a provence or state could cut your search time in half.

### 3/5 — Helpful

*2026-07-19, version 2.6.38*

So this app has been super helpful. However, I am a little disappointed in the fact that if someone marks a location as closed, iOverlander automatically marks it as closed on the map. One of my favorite places got marked as closed. I’ve been in the area twice and went in and asked and this location is NOT closed! Someone marked it as close out of spite or to be funny, who knows. I’ve tried to comment and state that it isn’t closed and now I can’t even access the location at all on the map! It’s a shame that people do stupid stuff and iOverlander doesn’t confirm any of the information.

### 2/5 — Payants

*2026-07-18*

Bonne route !

### 1/5 — Disgusting

*2026-07-15, version 2.6.38*

This is promoting illegal camping on private land. It should be banned. We take no responsibility for how illegal campers on our private wildlife reserve will be treated by our security forces patrolling for poachers.

### 3/5 — WTF

*2026-07-09, version 2.6.38*

WTF guys, there is no Russia on the list, but Ukraine 🤦🏻

### 1/5 — Continuously getting worse

*2026-07-08, version 2.6.38*

This app has gotten progressively worse over the years.

### 2/5 — Average app, no free trial as promised

*2026-07-06*

I signed up expecting 1 week free trial to review this app, however I got billed the same day so I’ve now cancelled it and won’t be resubscribing.
There are other apps that are cheaper and provide similar information. iOverlander is way too expensive bearing in mind the data it displays is provided by its own users and considering how widely this app is used, £10 a month, or even the annual sub, from each subscriber, is just a crazy amount of profiteering.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback. Just to clarify: the free trial is only available on the annual plan, not the monthly one. We're sorry for the confusion. The app is fully usable for free — subscriptions unlock premium features like additional place sets, offline maps, and search, and help us cover the real costs of running and maintaining the platform. We hear you on pricing and appreciate the honest words.

### 1/5 — There is literally nothing here

*2026-07-05*

Google maps is more useful

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback. In iOverlander you need to download places first before they show up on the map — go to Menu > Download Places, pick your region, and you'll find plenty there. Give it a try!

### 2/5 — Not finding much

*2026-07-04, version 2.6.38*

We need to find water and dump stations when we boondock and so far we aren’t getting much of anything on this app

### 2/5 — Used to be good

*2026-06-30, version 2.6.38*

This app was better before the paid version. Now navigation is more difficult and other bugs and weirdness. People also don’t seem to be updating things as closed/unavailable or adding new locations(I’m one of those people that don’t update/add things anymore). Sadly just can’t depend on the app any more. Dyrt now my go to.

### 3/5 — 不要太复杂

*2026-06-29*

希望不要太复杂，

### 1/5 — Rip off better free apps

*2026-06-28*

This company is a rip off camping app not worth it even for free its user interface is awful and has the most inefficient app system I’ve used. WikiCamps charges 8 cad per year and theres guys try and charge 130 per year it’s laughable! It’s information all uploaded by people, reliant on the community and yet they charge a premium. Maybe if it had discounts at campsites or something but as it is, very poor value. Recommend google free apps and avoid this

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for your feedback. We are giving away free upgrades to all users who frequently contribute and there is also no requirement to subscribe. The app remains fully usable in the free version; it simply limits features that are particularly costly for iOverlander to provide, such as offline maps and place downloads. With the free version, you can download one country at a time. If you need another country (for example, when crossing a border), you can delete the existing download and add the next country along your route. Thanks for your understanding!

### 1/5 — Keeps getting worse

*2026-06-23, version 2.6.38*

Now there are full page ads that you cannot X out of and have to either click on the sd or close the app. Terrible.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Nooo bueno

*2026-08-15, version 2.6.40*

Welp- forced to download this version since the devs bricked version 1 which just flat out worked…. For an app that was built from crowdsourcing they really have some nerve charging a 100$ a year for access. Should have offered discounts to everyone that ‘made this ‘ app what it is now . new version is paywalled beyond belief - not as snappy on low cell service either. Such a loss

### 1/5 — WARNING! DO NOT PURCHASE!

*2026-08-15*

Used to be free open source app where people could put this kind of information onto it for all people to access. Now the owners have come along, taken all of this information and put a paywall behind it. This information is from the people for the people, you did nothing create the dataset that you now charge for it isn’t yours to sell. Stop with the greed! Stop putting useless leeches at the intersection of every human interface! Let the people have freedom of discourse and information sharing!

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback, but there are a few things worth clarifying. The community data remains free to access — always has, always will. Subscriptions are only for premium features like additional place sets, offline maps, and search. We are not selling the data. We are charging for the infrastructure and development required to keep the platform running — something that volunteer hours and donations alone could no longer sustain. Our team, including moderators and developers, now receive a salary thanks to subscription income. Contributors are rewarded through our Rewards program. We encourage you to read the full story at ioverlander.com/whats_coming before drawing conclusions. The community is still at the heart of everything we do.

### 1/5 — Still sub par

*2026-08-11, version 2.6.40*

I have not used this app in a year. I tried it again and cannot believe they made it worse. Forget about using your phone. Every time you zoom in on a street name or town name, it stays so small you cannot read it. I tried it with and iPad, same deal. You can no longer use the search function without paying. Not worth the money even free.

### 1/5 — No longer useful

*2026-08-05*

This used to be the go-to app for Overlanders. No longer, it’s expensive and the interface is confusing and doesn’t really seem to work anymore. Sad, I’ve used it all over and contributed check ins which hopefully have helped others, no longer unfortunately.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback and for all your contributions over the years! The app is free and fully functional — you just need to download places first via Menu > Download Places. We'd love to help you get back on track. Reach out at support@ioverlander.com and we'll assist you.

### 1/5 — Horrible app now

*2026-07-31, version 2.6.38*

The new app makeover sucks. The format is horrible and everything has a paywall now. Once a great app now its useless.

### 1/5 — Scam Ads

*2026-07-30, version 2.6.38*

In trying to edit a site I was presented with a clock here to continue button which opened a scam website trying to convince me it was apple telling me my phone was infected and tried to open the dialer

### 1/5 — O pior aplicativo que já usei

*2026-07-22*

### 1/5 — Delete all and all check ins

*2026-07-22, version 2.6.38*

5 years on the road, 2 years since they deleted the original app (that worked perfect) 2 years of waiting for the new app to get better and the owners and developers are clearly out of touch and have zero interest in making this app better for the community that literally built it. Delete all your pins and move on to better options.

The Better options:
OnX (paid) layers that matter: BLM land, active wildfire, smoke layer and cell phone layers
The Dyrt (free) getting better every single day as long term users say goodbye to iOverlander forever
Hipcamp (paid) find amazing camps and support local farmers, ranchers directly. They’re also working to do something similar like hut to hut in the US

### 1/5 — Stingy app that ruins parking spots

*2026-07-21, version 2.6.38*

This app used to be the standard for van life. Not anymore for a few reasons:

1. They have taken years of people’s contributions and decided to leverage that into a paid app. That is borderline theft of content from well meaning users.

2. Don’t kid yourself about the “fremium” model. Do you want to see more than one state or province? Need to pay for that. Do you want to see a translation of a review that somebody wrote about a spot in French? You need to pay for that. Do you want to scroll without being bothered by constant pop-ups? You guessed it, you need to pay for that.

3. Abuse and overuse by certain users has made it so that spots listed become a nuisance for locals and therefore end up with no overnight parking restrictions. It is bad enough that you could almost use this app to decide where NOT to park.

In the end, we are in a different era than when this app was launched. The developers of this app became greedy and some of the users who are less than respectful that as well. This app is now worse than useless, but it costs more than ever.

### 1/5 — Echt jetzt?

*2026-07-21*

Sehr penetrant, ich konnte noch nicht mal testen und soll schon bewerten? Leude!

### 5/5 — Just great!

*2026-06-22*

Helps us find sites, water etc while living on the road and saves us a lot of time and money.
I just wish there was a way to save places so we can research in advance or save a few option to consider since some sites are not ideal or taken it’s great to research some additional options in advance

**Developer response:** Thank you so much — great to hear it's saving you time and money on the road! Good news: you can already save places as favorites in the app. Just tap a place and hit the heart icon. Safe travels!
