## What is iPolar?

iPolar generates sailing yachts polars of cruising yachts and cruiser racers from a very simple set of data. 

iPolar is fully functional on iPad, iPhone & iPod touch. 

Mandatory Input data:  

- Length Overall
- Displacement
- Mainsail area
- Jib area

(units can be set to metric or imperial)

Optional data: 

- Length Waterline
- Symmetrical Spinnaker area
- Assymetrical spinnaker aera

For each sail configuration in the input data, iPolars will compute a performance polar decribing the yacht performance in kts for wind strength ranging from 4 to 30kts and true wind angles ranging from 0° to 180°

Output format:

Resulting polars can be visualized as a graph and as a table of numbers within iPolar.

In addition, the polars can be sent directly to the weather/routing application Weather4D Pro.

Limitations:

iPolar has been developed to generate accurate polars of cruising yachts. It currently does not handle multihulls and is limited to yachts with a size ranging from 8 to 20m. The accuracy of the application decreases for yachts whose displacement to length and sail area to displacement ratios are outside the usual range for production cruisers and cruiser racers.

A very direct way to get your polar data into Weather 4D. The data is generated by boat dimensions. It’s hypothetical, not actual based on your performance.

L’ergonomie de l’appli est vraiment bien étudiée : claire et lisible.
En revanche les options de paramètres sont trop limitées : on devrait pouvoir renseigner (comme pour le Spi Asy) les caractéristiques des voiles supplémentaires mais néanmoins de plus en plus courantes : Code 0, Gennaker, etc...
Éventuellement sous forme de champ de voile générique : surface, vent Max, angles au vent MiniMaxi ?!?
Enfin une version multicoque serait la bienvenue
Ou bien un paramètre coefficient multiplicateur pour corriger le calcul polaire et le rapprocher de la réalité ....

Dans les valeurs sur le tableau le vent ne s’affiche que jusqu’à 30 noeuds de vent réels ... alors qu’auparavant il s’affichait jusqu’à 60 noeuds... comment faire pour avoir au moins le calcul jusqu’à 45 noeuds de vent réel?

Can’t believe this is the first review. This is a simply excellent little app to generate polar diagrams for sailing boats from basic information about the boat. 

Unlike racing yachts and newer cruisers there are many cruising boats without this information from the manufacturer and it is quite a lot of work to derive it experimentally, beyond many casual sailors.  So 5* for an inexpensive, intuitive and easy to use app which does exactly what it needs to do: generate a set of estimated sailing polars to use as a starting point for better sailing.

One feature I would request, if development is still being supported, is to be able to generate a single polar graph with a summary of several sets of curves, say 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 30 kts for example. At the moment each wind speed has to be viewed one at a time which is fine if using the app but less useful on board when a single page printout would be useful. Although the entire data set can be exported as a simple csv file the common spreadsheets like Excel and Numbers provide absolutely no support for polar data plotting and it seems all of the (many) graph charting apps that do support polar diagrams expect the use of equations to generate the curves not an R/theta data set. Unbelievable, really, in this day and age and very frustrating when trying to handle this highly useful data. 

PDF output of the polar graphs and data table would also be useful, saves a lot of screen grabbing on the iPad.

Finally, as a cutter owner, is it possible to include support for a cutter rig or at least an explanation of how to accommodate this sailplan in the sail area calculations?

I have spread the word amongst fellow cruising boat owners who have been looking for something like this for years and encouraging them to buy it, so I hope more purchases and feedback follows.

This app is terrible. It simply creates a polar based on LOA, LWL, Disp, and Sail Area. This has nothing to do with creating Polars via actual sailing. This is useless.
