## What is Iron Counter and Tracker?

Iron deficiency is common, especially during pregnancy & in menstruating women, vegetarians and vegans and people on low-protein, ultra-processed food (UPF), and restricted (eg gluten-free, dairy-free) diets. Symptoms include excessive fatigue due to anemia (which can lead to heart and other muscle damage), impaired mental and physical development, and immune dysfunction. Iron overload due to excessive dietary iron intake & habitual use of iron supplements may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (especially among people who are hypertensive) & other chronic diseases. The app can also help people with hemochromatosis avoid iron overload.
Set your target daily iron intake based on guidance provided in the app and your preferences for weights of food (g or oz).
Record food and beverage consumption using the barcode scanner (please note that only manufacturers in the US are required to include iron content in the nutrition label read by the scanner), dictation, search or by favoriting foods and using the serving sizes provided (which can be changed at any time). Tap the notepad to add notes. Compare the iron content of different foods by tapping the Compare button on the "Foods" screen.
Monitor daily and long-term progress, export data to share with healthcare providers, synchronize data with other First Line Medical Communications Ltd nutrient counter apps, and share data with Apple's HealthKit.
Add your own foods and recipes and change serving sizes to personalize the app's 400-item database for you.
All food and beverage popups indicate whether the item is a plant, good prebiotic, probiotic or ultra-processed food (UPF) to inform a healthy diet and whether they are high or low FODMAP per serving where data are available to support people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Useful lists show iron content of foods per 1oz or 100g and serving and can be toggled from high to low & low to high. Also useful UPF, unprocessed plant, prebiotic, probiotic, high & low FODMAP food lists.

### 1/5 — Useless App - You pay for working for them

*2023-10-01*

Almost nothing is available in the database. You have to type the iron content of almost everything you eat which is time consuming and extremely annoying. So basically, I paid $5 for working for the app developer as I am the one telling to the app the iron content of almost all the products I eat, then they can incorporate that information into the database that they are using for generating profits. What a scam!

**Developer response:** We would like to clarify that nobody who buys and uses the app is working for us (which is why the app is not free). Whatever you add to the app is for your benefit only and appears only in your app's database. To maintain your privacy, we have no knowledge of what you are doing with the app or who you are. The database provided with the app contains 400 common foods curated and developed by us for users to find a close fit.

### 2/5 — Not intuitive and lacking in catalog of foods

*2021-01-02*

I want to like this app, but it doesn’t have the basic features needed, or simplicity for most people. I think if this product were a side feature or plug in for a food tracker like my fitness pal or something it would work. Those other apps lack tracking like this for specific micronutrients like iron, and for people that need that, this would be a great add. But this app doesn’t have the volume or variety of foods that one of those apps has, and people are not likely to use this AND that separately to track diet and iron.

**Developer response:** We have now added in a barcode scanner. In addition, we provide a 325+ database of common unbranded foods and beverages. We also include App Previews on the App Store to provide guidance on how to use the Settings tab to set your preferred units for weights (g or ounces) and for amounts of nutrient (in terms of weight or % daily target) per serving and per weight unit, and how to record your intake by dictation, search and favoriting if you don't use the barcode scanner. This guidance is also provided in the "How to use the app" instructions included with the app.

### 4/5 — Question

*2019-08-26*

Sorry to write this here but can’t find another source for contact. Love the app but I’m wondering about the measurement. It says grams but is it actually milligrams. Seems all other iron info sites are measuring everything in milligrams and I just want to make sure I’m converting if necessary. Thank you

**Developer response:** The app uses USDA FoodData Central (https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/) and the USDA and US HHS Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, available at DietaryGuidelines.gov. for food and beverage iron content and recommended daily iron intake. Iron is measured in mg and food weights in g if that is your chosen weight measurement (you can choose g or oz on the screen accessed via the Settings tab).

### 2/5 — it works but is missing a lot of food

*2019-07-09*

the app works fine but it is missing lots of different foods. doesn’t have raisins, prunes, or chia seeds, and that is just from what i have entered today.

**Developer response:** The app has been redesigned using new Apple technologies and we have now added in a barcode scanner, but the United States and Canada are the only countries requiring manufacturers to provide iron content in the Nutrition label, so the data may not be available elsewhere in the world using the barcode. This is why we also provide a 325+ database of unbranded foods and beverages so that users in countries other than the United States or Canada can find a best fit. The 325+ common (mainly healthy) foods and drinks now include chia seeds, raisins and prunes, and you can add your own branded and other foods and recipes at any time. We constantly improve the app as new technologies evolve and new information becomes available. Once you have bought the app, you get free upgrades, you are not required to register, your data are not collected, additional payments are not required and there is no advertising. We also include App Previews on the App Store to provide guidance on how to use the Settings tab to set your preferred units for weights (g or ounces) and for amounts of nutrient (in terms of weight or % daily target) per serving and per weight unit, and how to record your intake by dictation, search and favoriting. This guidance is also provided in the "How to use the app" instructions included with the app.

### 5/5 — Greatest team & apps
