## What is Isotope MIDI Keyboard?

Isotope is an isomorphic MIDI keyboard app for iOS.

Isotope makes playing music fun and intuitive, while also making music theory more accessible.

Unlike traditional keyboard, Isotope's isomorphic grid layout is based on mathematical and geometrical properties of sound itself. When you play it, it's much more intuitive. When you want to learn about music, it shows how notes relate to one another.

# Isomorphic Keyboard
- If the interval stays the same, the form of your hand stays the same. For instance, when you put your first finger on the C, third finger on the E and the second finger on the G, it's the C major chord. Now that your fingers are in a triangle, if you just go up by one row, now it becomes the F major chord.
- Square-based isomorphic keyboards like Isotope resembles stringed instruments tuned in perfect 4th apart from one string to the next. Therefore, if you have an experience in playing stringed instruments like the guitar, the bass, the violin, or the cello, you will get learn to play Isotope quickly.

# Element
- Built-in Sound Engine for Isotope
- Available as an Audio Unit v3 plugin
- Element has a versatile sound characteristics resembles double bass and bass guitars in the lower range, electric piano in the mid range and woodwind in the higher frequency range.

# Connectivity
- Supports MIDI (Garageband, Drambo, FL Studio Mobile etcs.)
- MIDI over Bluetooth (For connecting Isotope to your computers / or any other devices that support MIDI over Bluetooth)

# Usability
- Multi-window and Slide Over support on iPadOS
- Velocity based on touch area and accelerometer
- 3rd party Audio Unit instrument plugins

# Customizability
- Row Interval adjustment
- Fully customizable themes
- Resizable buttons / app windows

## Key features

- Isomorphic grid layout for intuitive playing
- Built-in Element sound engine
- Audio Unit v3 plugin support
- MIDI and MIDI over Bluetooth connectivity
- Velocity-based touch and accelerometer input
- Customizable themes and layouts

### 5/5 — Please Make AUv3 Option!

*2025-09-21*

That's really what I need this for. I have paid and I will wait patiently. Thanks

### 5/5 — Please make the KB an AUv3

*2025-01-21*

OG REVIEW:

How is this NOT an AUv3? I don’t want a sound engine they is AUv3 and completely irrelevant - when I buy a keyboard that says it’s AUv3 I expect THEY KEYBOARD to be an AUv3… not the sound engine that is at best “illustrative”. quite frustrated right now. Sorry but this needs to be addressed.

UPDATED REVIEW:

Thanks a lot for the response - and also sorry for the previous frustration leaked into my comment - I am glad to hear you’re working on a solution ( the AUv3 keyboard ) as this is a fantastic controller and I certainly want to keep it around, just not as an additional app I have to switch back and forth into. If anything, after trying it out I became a bit more frustrated out of the fact that I was able to experience greatness out of it - I don’t mind if it takes a while, I would like it to see it become what it is (IMO) meant to be, a point in speculative time where it would certainly become one of my main tools for mobile production. The “synth” isn’t bad btw, it’s just not what I wanted to get out of the description / name of the app. It certainly is appreciated but the KB itself is what NEEDS to be an AU.

That being said, please consider adding MPE capabilities to it (for example independent midi channel, glide and pressure per “contact” / “ touch” / “press”) as an option; this would be a fantastic MPE controller.

PS: regarding the “velocity” and “pressure” side of your controller… is this app capable of reacting to 3D Touch? I’m asking because of the exposed settings to control the velocity of the midi notes (based on accelerometer and apparently maybe something else (3D touch maybe?)). I might just update my iPhone XS Max in order to use the app with it (if that is the case...). 3D Touch is a blessing - Apple should have never removed it from their brand - my new “pro” phone feels substantially sub-par to the XS Max precisely because it lacks IT (and some “AI” algorithms to make my pics crispier certainly don’t make up for it).

In essence: 3D Touch was a blessing for musicians, painters and 3D sculptors (I happen to do all of these things), and keyboards that support 3D Touch are GEMs in the App Store which could (hopefully) potentially incline Apple towards bringing such wonderful technology back.

**Developer response:** Hi! Thanks for the feedback, and I am sorry for the confusion.

Since there were some similar requests regarding AU keyboard feature, I am currently working on it. That being said, it could take some time until it is updated.

I would be grateful if you are willing to wait for the update, but if not, you can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com - note that I do not have any say over the refund process, but in my experience they usually do accept app refund requests.

Update: Thanks for your kind feedback! I was looking into MPE capabilities few month ago, but it was tricky to implement as of then. I myself am a musician, and I made the app to use myself so I certainly want to enable MPE in the future.

Regarding velocity readings, currently the app uses combination of touch area and accelerometer, so if you touch the key with just the tip of your finger it registers as lighter velocity than when you use full area of your finger. I agree that 3D touch was great and it would have been perfect to use it here, but unfortunately it's not feasible to implement it (even just for older devices with 3D touch) since I currently don't have any 3D Touch-capable device to test it on.

### 4/5 — …?

### 5/5 — Well realized and perfect for my needs

*2024-02-25*

This app pairs perfectly with AUM and Decent Sampler. I was looking for an Isomorphic Keyboard that could mirror my Linnstrument for creating Sonic Sketches on my phone. Although one can import Scala files in Decent, it has no Isomorphic Keyboard. This app made my day. I already have three new sketches for pieces. Thank you kindly for your valuable efforts here. If you are a student of Microtonality, or are interested in exploring Sonic Collages give yourself permission to play and enjoy this beautiful tool.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the very kind review!

I have not really considered microtonal music while making the app so if you have any suggestion for the app please feel free to contact me via the website linked in the app info page!

Hope you have a great time making music with the app!

### 5/5 — First look - good stuff!

*2024-02-12*

Hello! Just downloaded and it works well with Ableton. Haven’t tested other features, but this works as a great replacement for my Launchkey while I’m on the go! Hope this app sticks around!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the kind words!

I will definitely keep working on it since I use it myself as well! Hope you have a great time making music with Isotope!

### 3/5 — Auv3 error

*2024-01-26*

I think this is a fantastic instrument. It would be a 5 star, however it’s not working as a midi fx instrument in logic for iPad for some reason. Are you able to fix this?

**Developer response:** Hi! Sorry for a late reply.

The AUv3 support is for the included virtual instrument Element, not the keyboard itself. I will look into making a MIDI FX version in the future, since it has been requested a few times.

Thanks for the review!

### 5/5 — Excellent app

*2023-12-26*

Isotope works really well as a way to control other apps that take MIDI input. Try changing the glide mode to “hold initial note” and you can easily play arpeggiated chords by moving your held down fingers as needed. This app is a genuinely comfortable way to enjoy playing music with just your phone!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the kind review!

Hope you are still enjoying the app!

### 5/5 — Awesome isomorphic midi controller

*2023-12-12*

Just discovered this after using Musix Pro for years. Love the minimal style and easy, well thought out controls on screen. Also brilliant to have a sustain button. The dark theme is great too!

Would love to see the ability to make the sustain button an assignment expression slider for controller MIDI CC!

**Developer response:** Hi!

Thanks for the kind review and a great suggestion! I will definitely look into it. Hope you have fun using Isotope!

### 1/5 — no midi - no dynamic with accellerometer !!

*2023-04-01*

this app not works

**Developer response:** Hi, please send me an email to dears.mimicry_0v@icloud.com if you want me to take a look at the problem. MIDI and accelerometer dynamics both should work, but if you are experiencing a problem, I would like to take a look.

Thanks!

### 5/5 — nice but

*2023-02-02*

the app is really nice but i thought i could actually hide out of scale notes. i hope for it in an update :)

**Developer response:** Hi!

The app now has an option to hide out-of-scale notes.

Thanks for the suggestion!
