## What is Jade?

Jade is a Chinese dictionary and learning companion built to help you understand, remember, and use real Chinese.

Search by Hanzi, pinyin, English, or handwriting. Jade shows you what matters first: characters, pronunciation, and practical meaning. When you want to go deeper, explore examples, related words, audio, writing guidance, and detailed learning context.

UNDERSTAND MORE

Use Jade Explain for sentences, phrases, names, idioms, and unfamiliar expressions. Jade breaks Chinese down clearly so you can understand what it means, how it works, and when to use it.

REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARN

Save any word directly to flashcards and organize vocabulary into your own decks. Build lasting knowledge with personalized Daily sessions, spaced-repetition review, Smart Quiz, and Hanzi writing practice.

READ REAL CHINESE

Paste or import your own text, or explore curated stories in Jade Reader. Choose how much pinyin you want to see, tap unfamiliar words for instant help, reveal translations when you need them, and save useful vocabulary as you read.

LOOK UP CHINESE AROUND YOU

Point Jade Lens at Chinese text or import an image to recognize words in the real world. Look up what you find and save useful vocabulary directly to your decks.

LEARN YOUR WAY

Jade supports Simplified and Traditional Chinese, with optional Cantonese support. Core dictionary lookup and your saved learning data remain available offline, and no account is required to get started.

Whether you're learning your first characters or already reading Chinese, Jade gives you one place to look things up, understand them, and remember what you learn.

### 1/5 — No More Truly Free Useful Apps 😕

*2026-08-20*

I normally NEVER leave reviews, but I’m extremely disappointed with this app. I genuinely thought I had finally found a great Chinese dictionary/learning app, especially after seeing reviews describing it as amazing, free, and useful.

Unfortunately, you hit a paywall almost immediately. As soon as you add more than 10 words to a word list, you’re forced to either PAY or wait 24 hours to add more. That’s incredibly frustrating for an app that is supposed to help people learn Chinese and build vocabulary.

What makes it even more disappointing is that there are numerous word lists available to search through and import, many of which are already organized and freely available online in essentially the exact same format.

After reading the other reviews, I was genuinely convinced I had found the right app. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I would have been much more understanding of a reasonable subscription for advanced features, but restricting something as basic as adding words to a vocabulary list feels unnecessarily aggressive.

Very disappointing, especially for someone who was actually excited to use the app.

**Developer response:** I completely understand your reaction, and I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it. Finding the right balance between keeping Jade useful for free and supporting the development through Pro is difficult, but I agree that the current 10-word limit is too restrictive. I’ll be increasing the free Add to Deck limit in an upcoming update. Thank you for the honest feedback. It genuinely helps me improve Jade.

### 5/5 — I love it!!

*2026-08-02*

This app is great. I even bought the lifetime subscription and never regretted it. It has dictionary, vocabularies, and flashcard. It even has a system where you could take a photo of an item and the app will show you the Chinese wording of the item you took. It’s more like asking this app of how you say this item in Chinese. My only wish is that if the developers could make more category for more vocabularies ( like fruits, vegetables, transport, office, hobby, etc. ), then it will be better. Because right now it’s fella kinda less.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your support and for choosing Lifetime! ❤️ I’m really glad you’re enjoying Jade. And yes, we’ll definitely be expanding the vocabulary categories and adding many more decks over time. Happy learning! 😊

### 5/5 — Nice layout and breakdown structure

*2026-06-25*

Love the UI in this app and the way the dictionary is organized. I’m a diehard Pleco user and I’ve found myself using Jade much more. Also, the explanations and breakdown of the words make it much easier for me to study and remember words. I usually avoid studying chengyu, but I look forward to it now since installing Jade. I’ve even started using them in more casual conversation.

**Developer response:** This means a lot! thank you! I’m so glad Jade is helping you study and remember Chinese more naturally. More exciting features are coming soon, and Jade will only get better from here (including for free users).

### 5/5 — Best free app for Chinese!

*2026-05-29*

Genuinely try this app. I’ve tested so many apps and they all are so money hungry is wild. I hope this app never goes down that route. This is a godsend! Thank you developers!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much! this genuinely means a lot.

Jade is still early, but the goal is to build something that truly helps people learn Chinese without making the experience feel frustrating or overly restricted.

It's only going to get better from here!
