## What is Jan Reports?

Jan Reports reads a company's official financial filings and explains them in plain language — what it sold, what it kept, how solid the balance sheet is, and what deserves a second look.

EVERYTHING BY FIXED RULES, NO AI
Every sentence is produced by hand-written rules and thresholds. The same numbers in, the same words out, every time. No model, no chatbot, no fetching opinions online. The one exception: scanned PDFs are read with Apple's on-device text recognition, which only turns pixels into text — every recognized number is shown to you for checking, and the judgments stay rule-based.

YOUR DATA STAYS ON YOUR PHONE
There is no server of ours. Filings come straight to your device from regulators' and exchanges' public channels (Europe via XBRL International's public ESEF repository, which gathers filings from national officially appointed mechanisms) and are computed and cached locally. The app collects nothing.

11 MARKETS
• US — SEC EDGAR structured data (10-K/10-Q/20-F/40-F), direct conclusions
• Europe/UK — EU ESEF structured filings (IFRS), direct conclusions
• Korea — OPEN DART structured filings, annual reports (bring your own free key)
• Brazil — CVM open data, direct conclusions
• Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Australia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia (experimental) — official annual-report PDFs; every number is confirmed by you before translation
• Anything else — type the numbers in yourself; same rules apply

READ IT IN ENGLISH OR CHINESE
The reading itself — verdict, cards, evidence, glossary, caveats, comparisons, notifications — can follow your system language or be switched by hand. Judgments and scores are identical in both.

COMPARE TWO ORIGINALS
Put any two reports from the same company side by side: item by item, ratio by ratio — and check whether the company quietly restated last year's numbers.

WHAT THIS APP IS NOT
It is not investment advice. It has no share prices, no valuations, no analyst views, and no idea what the market expects. The score just adds a few financial indicators with fixed weights — it describes financial condition and says nothing about whether to buy or sell.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.1 — 2026-10-18

This release is about saying only what the numbers support: explanations were checked against original reports, and where evidence falls short the app shows the numbers and stops.

Overall score and traffic light
- When fewer than 4 cards can count toward the score (common for banks, insurers, REITs and investment companies), there's no 0–10 score or traffic light; the report says why instead. Cards that make no call no longer count as a zero. A yellow light with no good and bad signs among the scored cards reads "Mid-range score — the details matter". Card badges read "good sign / bad sign". Settings explains how the score works, company-named tags, and how the cushion card counts investments.

No made-up stories
- The headline and the cost and gross-margin cards give a reason only when the data supports one. "Is the money coming in" no longer guesses at motives such as loosened credit terms; it lists possible causes side by side.
- When an item wasn't recognized, the app says so — not that the filing doesn't have it.
- Limitation notes and "What the code can't see" say only what holds in the code and the accounting rules.

Debt and cash
- "How thick is the cushion" says "net cash" only when cash plus short-term investments that check out cover the debt; long-term securities, unreconciled figures and separate lease liabilities can only hold back a conclusion. Sources that read cash only (PDFs, manual entry, Europe, Korea) no longer say "net debt" when cash is below debt.
- Interest-bearing debt is picked up more fully and added up wrongly less often (Tencent's notes payable, Walmart's quarterly short-term borrowings, Nokia's borrowings). China A-share and Taiwan PDFs add only borrowing lines from the same consolidated balance sheet, and say so when the total may be incomplete.
- The debt-ratio card is now "How much is owed" and no longer treats all liabilities as a mortgage; it mentions deposits or policy reserves only for SEC-registered banks or insurers.

Clearer definitions
- In a year with a business sold or spun off (US filings), profit growth, net margin and cash versus profit use continuing operations; the comparison page doesn't compare net profit or EPS across such a period.
- Cards say whether profit is the parent's share or includes minority interests, what the EPS numerator is, and whether finance leases are in interest-bearing debt (or that it can't be checked).
- The share-count card describes the average count and no longer assumes fewer shares means buybacks; with both counts in a US filing, it judges on the basic count.
- A US "operating income" figure that the filing's own income statement shows isn't that line (Disney tags its segment total) is treated as not recognized.
- When over half of revenue was billed or paid for earlier and mainly explains the growth (US filings), the growth isn't treated as good news.

Cash and profit
- The cash-quality and free-cash-flow cards drop phrases like "the real deal" and "free to spend"; when added-back stock pay exceeds operating cash flow, they describe without scoring in some cases. Free cash flow no longer infers "plants and equipment" from a tag name.
- "Is spending under control" no longer re-counts a gross-margin change, and a small margin gain no longer earns green.
- Property REITs have property-sale gains and losses taken out before comparing profit with cash; Brazilian banks' "financial intermediation revenue" is no longer treated as revenue.

Other fixes
- US amended annual reports (10-K/A etc.) now use full-year figures, and margins and free cash flow no longer mix periods of different lengths. When a filer's fiscal year or quarter tag doesn't fit the period end, the headline uses dates ("three months through…").
- An off-by-one day in US "revenue per day", Indian reports named after the exchange, and more.

### 1.3 — 2026-10-09

Six new cards on US reports that read out numbers without drawing conclusions: lease liabilities (future rent on leased space and equipment — not counted in the debt card), restricted cash (the cash flow statement's total minus the balance sheet's cash), both balances laid out when cash and debt are both large, supplier finance program balances (a required US disclosure for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2022), share-based compensation set next to operating cash flow, and three kinds of filing-record events (late-filing notices, notices that prior financials should no longer be relied upon, auditor changes — tags only, no reasons). Each card states only figures this filing itself tagged; none of the six is scored. One knock-on change: when cash and debt are both large, the balance-sheet card's green light becomes neutral. Of the thresholds we backtested, none separated companies that blew up from healthy large ones, so the app doesn't pretend one does.

Interest-bearing debt is computed differently: short-term borrowings and commercial paper now count (they were missed before — about US$8 billion at Apple, US$6.6 billion at Walmart); every step must reconcile within the filing itself or the figure is withheld; and the report no longer shows a prior-year figure for it.

When a watched US company posts an earnings release (an 8-K tagged Item 2.02) before its formal report, you get a notice saying the report isn't in yet and that item carries no numbers; another notice follows when the report lands.

Settings gains "What the code can't see": text in the notes (going-concern doubts, related parties, customer concentration, lawsuits, guarantee terms), figures disclosed with dimensions (pension shortfalls), A-share guarantee and pledge tables, and fraud itself — none of it is in the structured numbers, so the app can't see it.

Fixes for several cases that could show a wrong number: US reports no longer pull figures from non-report filings such as proxy statements (one company's full-year profit was once shown as "$1,690"); debt now includes convertible notes listed on the balance sheet, and is left out when it can't be pinned down; "how long the cash lasts" counts the short-term investments on the same balance sheet; companies with several tickers show their primary one; some Brazilian companies' net profit no longer reads as zero; and Latest filings no longer claims "that's everything" after a network hiccup.

Importing annual-report PDFs is more careful: currency and unit are taken only from the statements' own headers, and when they disagree the app asks you to choose (the unit can now be changed too); tables with years running oldest-to-newest and parent-company statements in the notes are no longer read as this year's consolidated figures; and low-confidence items, or a balance sheet that doesn't add up, are no longer pre-ticked — anything left unticked can be typed in right there.

As always: fixed rules, no AI, not investment advice.

### 1.2 — 2026-09-05
