## What is Japa?

Count any prayer or mantra — mala, rosary or tasbih — with the words in their own script, kept only on your devices.

EVERY PATH IS WELCOME HERE

Japa belongs to no single tradition. Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh and secular practices sit side by side in its built-in collection, each in the script its own tradition writes it in, with a romanisation so you can say the words either way. It counts a mala of 108 as readily as a rosary of 50, a tasbih of 33 or 99, a psalm, a metta phrase, a line of dhikr, an affirmation you wrote yourself, or four rounds of breath. Whatever you write is yours, exactly as you wrote it.

Japa is a quiet place for the words you return to. Pick a prayer, a mantra, an affirmation, a passage of scripture, or a breath practice. Keep its full text with you. Then tap a large, calm counter and let the counting take care of itself.

WHAT JAPA DOES

• Tap to count. A big, haptic counter you can find without looking down.
• Keep the words close. The full text stays on screen while you recite.
• Count without keeping it. A quick counter that opens at zero and saves
nothing — for a round you do not need recorded.
• Start from the collection. Traditional prayers, mantras and phrases from many
traditions, in their own script with a romanisation — or write your own.
• Keep the holy days. Navaratri, Ramadan, Lent, Vesak and more bring their
practices to Today at their traditional counts for as long as they run — and
show the whole program, day by day, before you add one.
• Count the beads. The big number is what is in hand and starts again each
round — with an optional bell that sounds even when the ringer is off.
• Breathe. A tab of its own: five paced rhythms or one you write, a sitting as
long as you like, and a cue at each turn.
• Set the goal in beads and rounds — or no beads at all, and a number of your
  own.
• See your day, and every day. Totals, completed practices, a gentle streak, and
a calendar of everything behind it.
• Undo or reset today. Slips happen; your earlier history stays untouched.
• Build a library. Search, favorite, edit and organize every practice you keep.
• Take it with you. Export everything you have written, whenever you like.
• Count from your wrist. An Apple Watch app for everyone, with its own haptics
and a complication — it keeps counting with the phone out of range.
• Count from the Home Screen. Widgets with a button that counts without
opening the app, a Live Activity on the Lock Screen while you practice, and
Siri phrases. Or turn on the volume buttons and count from a pocket.
• See your time. Each sitting's minutes, on the day and in your history.

A GENTLE INTENTION, NEVER A REQUIREMENT

A daily goal in Japa is something to move toward, not a debt. Nothing nags you, nothing is lost when you miss a day, and resetting today never touches the days behind it. The streak is there if it helps you, and quietly ignorable if it does not.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN

No account. No sign-in. No ads, no analytics, no tracking of any kind. Your practices and their words are stored only on your device — and, if you turn on iCloud sync, in your own private iCloud — and Japa collects nothing at all. You can export the lot to a readable file at any time.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.11 — 2026-10-05

Ready for Diwali: from 23 October, a free programme for Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, 6–11 November, with a short reflection each day and Lakshmi and Ganapati mantra counting, in English or Hindi. Backups, history and sounds also load more smoothly.

Counting stays unlimited and free.

### 1.10 — 2026-10-02

A calmer, more consistent design, clearer text, and layouts that work better with Larger Text. You can now add an exact bead count as well as whole rounds. This update also improves counting across midnight and refreshes Live Activity counts more reliably.

Counting stays unlimited and free.

### 1.9 — 2026-09-29

Take a vow, bring in the rounds you count on your own beads, and see each practice's milestones.

• Vows. Set a total to reach in the days you choose, such as 125,000 in forty days, and Japa counts it beside your daily goal, with what each remaining day needs. Part of Japa Lifetime.
• Counted on your own beads? Add whole rounds, or any number, to today without tapping them out afterwards.
• Milestones. When a practice passes 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 and beyond, Japa marks the moment, with a card you can share.
• A streak can now rest one day a week, so one missed evening no longer ends it.
• A Home Screen widget can follow the practice you choose.

Counting stays unlimited and free.

### 1.8 — 2026-09-24

The collection now explains itself in your language, Diwali keeps its own five nights, and a practice can be saved and started in one tap.

• Every page, in your language. What the words mean phrase by phrase, where they come from, how they are traditionally recited — the page behind each ⓘ now reads in all thirty-three languages, and so do the calendar's explanations. Until now they were English only.
• Diwali has its own five nights — Dhanteras through Bhāī Dūja — instead of borrowing the date of Bandi Chhor Divas. The Sikh commemoration of the sixth Guru's release falls on the same night and is not the same observance; each now keeps its own reckoning.
• Save and start. Open anything in the collection and begin counting it straight away, without the detour through the editor.
• A purchase you already own is restored rather than refused.
• The welcome screen offers the breath.

Counting stays unlimited and free.

### 1.7 — 2026-09-21

Breath gets a tab of its own, the calendar reads as one list, and the collection finally says what its words mean.

• Breathe. Five paced rhythms or one of your own, a sitting of 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes — or ten breaths, or open-ended — with a haptic and a soft tone at each turn of the breath.
• A calendar in one list. What is happening now and what is coming, narrowed by tradition, and every holy day says whose reckoning its dates follow.
• A page for every practice. What the words say, where they come from, how they are traditionally recited, and whether a count is traditional or simply our suggestion.
• Read aloud, wherever iOS has a real voice for the text.
• Every practice wears its own emblem and its own color — on the phone, the watch and the Home Screen.
• Count with a double tap on Apple Watch, and open a practice from Control Center, the Action button or the Smart Stack.
• Punjabi, Tamil, Malay, Greek and Romanian: thirty-three languages in all.

Counting stays unlimited and free. New installations get three saved practices, seven days of history and the preset breathing rhythms; existing users keep the allowance they already had.
