## What is Japanese Flashcards TokeiTango?

TokeiTango is derived from the Japanese words 時計 tokei (watch/clock) and 単語 tango (word). It's a flashcard app for learning over 9,000 of the most common Japanese words - think of it as Anki for the Apple Watch.

TokeiTango is built exclusively for the Apple Watch. Every screen and study session is designed for the small screen and a few spare seconds, so you can sneak in some Japanese while catching the train, waiting in line, or giving your raised arm a rest.

Key features:
- Spaced-repetition algorithm that repeats words you struggle with more often than ones you already know
- Conjugations for verbs and adjectives - past, negative, て-form, and more, all spoken aloud
- Grammar Patterns built from the words you're learning, like "a way of," "be able to," and "have to"
- Example sentences for every word, written to use only vocabulary and grammar you've already learned
- Audio pronunciation for every word and sentence
- Choose how you learn - by JLPT level (easy to hard) or by word frequency (common to rare)
- Bookmark words to look up later
- Statistics and a 28-day activity view to track your progress
- Watch face complications so you can learn a new word with a glance
- Daily reminders to keep your streak going

Romaji uses the Hepburn system, the clearest way to read Japanese with English letters.

TokeiTango is built and maintained by san serif, an independent studio in Sydney. If it's helping you learn Japanese, we'd love a review on the App Store - and if you have feedback or ideas for future versions, follow us on Twitter (@tokeitango) and let us know.

### 1/5 — 垃圾

*2026-08-17*

给鬼佬学的，根本不应该上国区

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2026-06-12*

I have 20/20 vision and can’t read it on 42mm watch — way too small, the colour scheme also lacks contrast for readability.

Voice is very buggy and usually doesn’t respond.
Unfortunate as it’s a niche I really hoped would be filled, but it’s unusable

### 5/5 — Great app, does not work for gesture control

*2026-02-24*

I really wish I could continue using this app, but now I’m considering of getting a refund. For some reason the ☑️ button in the cards does not work with the latest gesture control from WatchOS 26. I usually use this feature when I’m working so I can study Japanese without touching the screen. Please fix it asap. If you could I think it would be a great addition if I could just tap my fingers and it ☑️/↪️/❌ in a much faster way instead of having to select each button and confirm. Looking forward to new features & thank you for this app.

UPDATE:
Thank you so much!! I look forward to the next update 😍😍

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback! The upcoming 5.10 update adds Double Tap support directly to the ☑️ button so you can study completely hands-free.

I would love to map the ↪️/❌ buttons to a wrist flick as well, but Apple strictly limits developers to only one native hand gesture per screen.

Since the 5.10 update delivers the hands-free workflow you were looking for, I’d really appreciate it if you could update your review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! 頑張って！

### 3/5 — Issue with Complication setting

*2025-12-27*

Currently, the Complication setting is not working. I selected N1 only but still majority of the words are N5 N4 N3 level. I am on WatchOS 26 and using series 8 apple watch.

**Developer response:** The setting doesn’t take effect immediately because your watch’s complication timeline has been pre-filled with words from the previous selected level. Please give it some time and adjust your review. Thanks.

### 2/5 — Hirigana gone

*2025-06-07*

I really like this on my watch ultra but latest update has removed hirigana translation making it virtually useless

**Developer response:** While developing the circular complication I accidentally removed hiragana from the rectangular complication 😅. It’s been fixed in version 4.41. Please reconsider your review 🙏🏼

### 5/5 — Watch Complication Upgraded 🙏

*2025-05-02*

Great app idea and amazing developer! Originally, the Ultra watch face complication showed all Japanese words (N5-N1), despite the in-app flash cards set for only N5 beginner words.

Incredibly the developer responded to my feedback, stated they would add this feature, and actually updated the app! Now the Ultra face complication works beautifully and I’m learning new words daily.

Please support such dedicated programmers and pick up this beautiful app 🤌

**Developer response:** In the version 4.30 update there is a new setting for what the complication will display. Thank you for updating your review. 🙏🏼

### 5/5 — Watch Complication Difficulty

*2025-04-14*

Great app idea. Unfortunately the Ultra watch face complication shows all Japanese words (N5-N1), despite the in-app flash cards set for only beginner (N5) words.

Thankfully the developer responded and stated they would add this feature in a new update. Please support such dedicated programmers because the app execution so far is fantastic! Keep going with this great idea and thank you 🤌

**Developer response:** In the version 4.30 update there is a new setting for what the complication will display. Thank you for updating your review. 🙏🏼

### 4/5 — Watch Complication Difficulty

*2025-04-07*

Great app idea. Unfortunately the Ultra watch face complication shows all Japanese words (N5-N1), despite the in-app flash cards set for only beginner (N5) words.

This kind of defeats the purpose of learning new and applicable words on the complication. And I hope the developer will institute a fix because the app execution so far is fantastic! Keep going with this great idea and thank you 🤌

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for the feedback. In a future update I will make a new setting for what the complication will display.

### 3/5 — Can’t select JLPT level

*2022-07-22*

I bought this app for one reason - to passively see JLPT N1 vocabulary when I glance at my watch. It seems to have this feature “Card Order -> JLPT N5-N1 -> N1 , but it doesn’t seem to work. I basically just seem to get random N5 and N4 words.

So I have no use for this app until that’s fixed. But otherwise the implementation seems nice.

**Developer response:** In the version 4.30 update there is a new setting for what the complication will display. Please consider updating your review. 🙏🏼

### 5/5 — Great App for On-The-Go Study

*2021-09-09*

The app was very well made for the Apple Watch. Uses a standard and effective method for learning vocabulary.

If I would add anything to this app, it would be 2 things: 1) Allow to see the example sentences and pronunciation audios from the Bookmarks saved, 2) Add the same type of complication to other watch faces that support the space required in the middle section.

Other than that, phenomenal app!

**Developer response:** Thanks for your review and feedback!

As of version 2.80 both these feature requests have been implemented. Hope you are enjoying the update.
