This app really helped me memorize katakana and hiragana and when I would forget a section I would retake the quiz for those characters. This app helped me learn grammar too. For example it helped me learn the difference between いきますといきません. And food words like えだまめ,ポテトチップス my favorite! This forces you to use MP (rare or $$$) to see the wrong answer just so you can progress in the game. However I’ve already encountered so many issues in the first 30 min of playing. The game didnt give me half of the starting supplies it said (no 500 starting yen), the ad didnt give me stamina and now says I can’t watch anymore, and when I accept rewards half the time they dont go into my bag. Hiragana characters have sounds that are associated with them which are not exactly like sounds represented by English letters. These Japanese learning apps need to stop pushing romaji on everyone. ### 2/5 — Nice art, not really a game, fundamentally useless *2024-01-24, version 1.4* Not really a “game” and you don’t really “play” anything and despite boasting it’s not another flashcard blah blah, it actually is but it’s actually worse than that unfortunately. It forces you to “learn” katakana and hiragana otherwise you won’t unlock kanji etc, it’s method for teaching are you guessed it, multiple choice flash cards, quite possibly the worst way to learn and there are far better methods to learning kana with mnemonics (tofugu being an example) which take days vs the months if not longer that it will take here in this app using this method of rote boring learning. You meet and talk with people in the “adventure” they will often have an initial sentence in Japanese and then after in English maybe with a few Japanese words mixed in later on, trouble is, it’s not clear if the English sentence below is reiterating what the Japanese one is saying above and I can see beginners getting frustrated at their inability to read the Japanese given that the so called game has not covered the words or grammar used. These people in the adventure will often give a quiz or test or whatever and this is where the real problem with this app is…. They present words in katakana or hiragana (regardless of whether they are usually written that way or not) and then you type that same word out in romaji… if like me your scratching your head then your not alone, not only is learning and using romaji an arguably pointless thing to do in the first place but it’s effectively a mirror of the hiragana or katakana on display making it doubly pointless, to make matters worse the app only accepts one style of romaji and very inconsistent one at that so good news for everyone out there that use other programs which interpret and convert you typed romaji input into hiragana or katakana and if you write in a different style as you fail things you actually got correct over and over and over, for example they look for sha only not sia shya etc etc and there is no option to interpret and convert to hiragana/katakana on the fly instead. After you pointlessly type the answer out it briefly shows what the word means for a split second, clean rinse repeat, so yeah it basically another rote flashcard system, I couldn’t tell you any of the last 100 words I did….. no mnemonics, nothing. After hours I get to a pub in the adventure and I see a “pub quiz” and I think FINALLY maybe it’s an actual game but alas no, it’s the exact same as above with the hiragana or katakana on display and you typing in the romaji…. Maybe this wouldn't be 1000% pointless if this worked in both directions ie. Showed the word and you type the meaning etc etc but no, and even then that would only be a 1% improvement of the existing. Kanji is taught in a similar manner, your shown the kanji list, your expected to just learn it rote, I see no game, then like above you do a quiz and type the romaji…. If your looking for the most inefficient way to learn kanji then this is the app for you👍 I find the bag and inventory system a little annoying but I like the rpg elements I suppose but it’s like tacking rpg elements on to nothing tbh because as mentioned I’ve found no game yet. Maybe there is a game in there somewhere but I haven’t found it yet, everything so far has been the same boring and pointless look at a word and type it out. There is no structure and I don’t really feel like there are any achievements…. It’d be nice to learn a few words and a grammar point and then for the app to forcibly hammer those points home until it’s sure you got them before allowing you to proceed …. Ideally with an actual game… before finally showing the Japanese sentence or story in the “adventure” so you could be rewarded by being able to actually comprehend what’s being said. This is all constructive criticism. All in all this app needs a lot of work. It asks you questions and also has you read in Japanese which I really like cause not a lot of apps let you read Japanese unless you pay for it.
