It works better on some devices than others yet drops signal completely at random on even the most robust networks. It seems to perform better on a third party streaming service such as iHeart radio or TuneIn. Help solve this problem by becoming a member and help support keep Jazz alive. ### 3/5 — works on Apple Silicon Mac but… *2024-01-27, version 11.0.34* An actual Mac app would offer a better user experience; e.g., (1) pause/mute/resume from Dock or menubar instead of having to open the app window to do so, (2) resize app window: most of the time I just want to listen, I don't care about what the app's window is showing and would prefer to reduce the space it takes when open. I realize this is an iPad app, with iPadOS' UI assumptions and limitations. Just asking for a little more effort to get a full-fledged Mac version ### 2/5 — Greatest jazz station I have ever experienced! *2023-04-24, version 11.0.34* But the app is poorly designed and ad driven. The cue was 1:48 behind and very hard to read. Might want to talk to the folks at Radio Paradise about their app which has a simple design and info about the song, artist and album. Since the app is not very functional, I listen on my sonos most of the time. There is not song info from KCSM on that app either. That said, I still support the incredible folks that keep this amazing station going! That’s the most important part. Expecting drill down on album icons—to, say, Amazon—but didn’t see that. Opportunity for improvement. ### 3/5 — Pretty good, could use some updates but not broken *2021-01-24, version 10.1.17* My biggest complaint is the font color, as light blue on a white background can be hard to read at times, but the app functions decently! You can listen with the screen off, and even set an alarm through the app if you’d like (I don’t know why, since the native clock app is easier to access). What few ads are on the app are easy to avoid and close, and in my time using it I have yet to come into any problems with playback. If I could update it, I think I’d add either a dark mode option, or a way to change the background image/font color to be more legible. ### 2/5 — Very good App until lately *2020-12-07, version 10.0.12* I am a different listener but I want to have someone also reread the comments from WLM115 on 10/16. This problem is still occurring December 6. On December 6 was composer Dave Brubeck’s would’ve been his one hundredth birthday, all of the on air personalities were great but hour the live stream kept dropping, for example the application during Senor Chuey Varella program dropped six different times and I was unable to appreciate his Latin tribute to composer Dave Brubeck, I’ve checked with Apple, my phone carrier and there was neither problem from both companies . Can this problem be rectified?thank you ### 2/5 — Could be better *2019-12-28, version 9.0.17* There is a lot of wasted space. The ads in the app are obnoxious. There is an up/down vote feature but the UI makes it difficult to verify if you upvoted or downvoted. I would love a link to buy a song or album. They have Amazon donation link but it would be great if this would link from tunes played. There is a red bar under the song playing but what is it supposed to represent? It isn’t like it tells you how long the song is. Also enough with the never ending headache inducing solos that go on forever and are just some arrogant sax player showing off how many notes he knows!! ### 4/5 — App now works with iPad digital output! *2019-08-12, version 9.0.17* A few months ago I gave this app. one star because of the problem explained below. Accidentally opened the app. today and they’ve apparently got iPad digital output to DAC via CCC fixed. KCSM, thanks for listening! Shindo Devore —————————————————————————— I LOVE KCSM and have supported it for years, but I’m disappointed in this app. When you plug a headphone amp/dac into iPad via the Apple Camera Connection Cable, the app continues to output audio via the analog headphone jack instead of switching to the digital out. Other jazz station apps act correctly, and the WBGO app is a great example. Plug in your amp/dac via the ACCC and viola! Pure digital bliss fills your headphones. ### 4/5 — Great app — great station — but breaks airplay *2018-12-30, version 9.0.8* Love listening to KCSM via the app: loads better than any jazz station here in the UK, but it seems to break airplay (works ok with Bluetooth), at least it does for me, so I find myself using it less often. Creates an extra airplay device called "speaker", along with the phone and the airplay receiver; none of them actually connect to the airplay receiver. Other audio/radio apps working fine. iPhone 8, iOS 12.1.2. ### 4/5 — 12/18 update doesn't work on airplay *2018-12-22, version 9.0.8* Since the latest upgrade the KCSM app won't play on my speakers anymore, only on my phone. I love the station but I mainly listen at home through speakers, not my phone. Hope this issue can be fixed soon. The app is useless to me without this feature. ### 3/5 — Works but hard on the eyes *2015-09-01, version 6.25.0* I love the playlist feature for learning the names of artists, albums, and song titles of previously played songs. The buffering issue from the previous version seem to have been fixed - the app streams without gaps in the playback. The play / pause button within the app does not work, but it does work on the lock screen! The app and the streaming is really disgusting. All they seem to want you to do is to watch the ads, so why should I bother giving them a donation. Unlike every other app that I know of if the screen is dark or if you try to look at something else it stops. And if you access it via a browser it also malfunctions constantly. I live 1 mile from KCSM but reception is often spotty due to topography. Got app to AirPlay via AppleTV to stereo system. Oooopppsss! App is able to push intrusive constant ads but doesn’t allow AirPlay. Sorry KCSM you’ve put my 2X / year donations in jeopardy. App lasted 10 minutes. Once no AirPlay confirmed I deleted the crap app. ### 1/5 — Embarrassing App for a Great Jazz Station *2020-11-27, version 10.0.12* If this App is not the Worst Jazz Radio App out there, its surely at the bottom. Constant BIG Ad right in your face always with Missing Kids ad or something. And someone must think its OK to have piano black keys background which obscures the foreground making it uneven and impossible to read foreground information. And of course theres a link to the playlist which takes you to a mini mini view website without a Reader View option. And its never updated in Real Time! It also disconnects frequently (which none of my other music apps do). C’mon KCSM this thing should be trashed and new one created by Professionals put in place. This App needs serious facelifting. I love KCSM but please fix the App. ### 1/5 — Terrible app, plagued with ads *2019-05-12, version 9.0.8* This is among the worst apps I have ever used. I love KCSM and am a supporter. But the KCSM app ads are pervasive and cannot be dismissed. I tried the Safari browser on iOS and it’s even worse. There, the ads actually stop music playback until one acknowledges the ad. That’s totally unacceptable. For now, the only ways I know to listen are: 1) using a radio (such as in my car), and 2) through a computer browser with an ad blocker installed. From reading through many older reviews of the app, it has never been very good. This is in contrast to many other radio station apps that work flawlessly and are designed well. Why can’t KCSM get this right after so many years? ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Best App I Have And Perfect For Jazz Heads *2024-03-23, version 11.0.65* After moving from the Bay after 20+ years, I still listened to KCSM Jazz 91.1, esp at work, to my favorite station with all my “friends” and familiar voices. I’ve been a listener for a good 15 years. Since I hold antipathy towards tech and apps, it never occurred to me until a few months ago to download it. The track list is impeccably organized and the track ID shows on your phone lockscreen (with the time) and on your car screen, effortlessly. It should also be noted that for a public radio station with low funds, that this is better than Soundcloud and Mixcloud combined is extra cool. Whoever has a complaint about this app is indubitably a jazz dilettante. *This is the first app review I’ve written because… I just don’t care about apps. Taught me tons about this original American music! ### 5/5 — My Go-to Music Choice *2018-08-29, version 8.0.0* The app is a fine way to listen to a GREAT station. I find the “dinner jazz” programming a bit backgroundy for my taste but all the programming is targeted to what most folks like at the time of day here on the Left Coast. Great ### 5/5 — Great music! *2015-11-11, version 6.25.0* I live in an area of Contra Costa county that for some reason doesn't get the 91.1 station anymore. It came in clear up until a few months ago. So, this app and the website are the only ways to hear the amazing music played over the radio waves. I agree with those below, that the only strange glitch with the app is when I press Pause, a couple seconds later it switches back to Play again. It is embarrassing when I accidentally open the app in public and music blasts out from my phone with no way to actually pause it. The only way to stop the music is to close the app completely. And yes that has happened more than once... Otherwise, I love the music that KCSM plays--and since I can't get it on the radio anymore, the app is a window into that musical universe. ### 5/5 — Love it *2014-05-13, version 5.92* Love the app love the music !! ### 5/5 — Love it! *2013-12-15, version 2.1* I live in another state and this station was a wonderful discovery. Their efforts shine in this app making it is one of the best of apps of any genre. Solid. Fast. Reliable. Works great with my LG Bluetooth stereo earbuds. Another great feature is the Playlist detailing artist, title, album. Note however that very late night emcee Bob Parlocha skips the playlist entries but more than makes up for it with his commentary on the artist plus whoever is playing what. His knowledge is vast.
