### 4/5 — 2023 Advent Calendar was a delight (eventually)

*2024-01-19*

The 2023 advent calendar ended up being a delight (loved that all the original games were included along with many new ones!). Unfortunately the ‘slow reveal’ technique used this year made the outdoor scenes feel two dimensional and uninviting for the first half of the month. The house windows were all dark and there was no cute village to stroll through and re-decorate. The sitting room held all the action, and each day a new gift provided more fun and games. By the end it was a blast, but it was a shame to have to wait half the season to really enjoy the beauty of the outdoor scenes.

### 3/5 — Disappointment vs other years

*2024-01-06*

I have looked forward to this advent calendar for the past 5 years. Honestly, there were many key components I missed this year—the snowman, outside tree lights and other features (store displays, light poles) that changed when you touched them and the interactive nature of the scene in general. I loved the year we found the gnomes, and then they turned up on the game room bookshelf and sing Merry Christmas on the 25th. Perhaps if the animals we find each day had culminated in an outside parade?? Fingers crossed for next year?!?

### 2/5 — Disappointment compared to previous years

*2023-12-31*

My mother, sister and I have been enjoying the JL advent calendars for years. This year was a disappointment, I’m very sorry to say. I did love searching for animals each day, that was enjoyable. However, if you look at the main scene - where’s Christmas? Where are the lights, decorations - any signs of the season? It was bare, cold, and actually slightly depressing. In past years there were trees with lights, wreaths, decorations, children sledding, snowmen, fireworks, Santa at Christmas and so much more. This year, nothing. Lonely (although cute) animals out in the snow. Please, less videos, more entertainment and more outdoor holiday decor and excitement next year!

### 3/5 — Not as fun

*2023-12-30, version 1.1.3*

Not as fun as the last two years. I’ll probably still buy it, but I hope it improves.

### 3/5 — WAY Too Many Videos 👎

*2023-12-27*

(As the review I originally posted seems to have vanished, I will just start from scratch). I see quite a few positives in this calendar, including some new additions (i.e.: the train set, a tapestry, new and attractive ornaments for the Christmas trees). I am also very happy that the pets are back! (They were missed!). I do enjoy the daily animal search as well! 🦔 Plus, the artwork is as enjoyable as ever, with nice little touches like the railroad in the distance, the partridge around which a pear tree appears and so on. However, there is one aspect of this app that I really do not enjoy and the impact of it is significant: the fact that instead of featuring an array of varied and engaging activities (which the 2022 Sussex calendar did incredibly well!), this calendar has reverted back to employing an excessive number of videos as the daily feature, as it did back in 2021, with the London calendar. 👎 It is not that the videos are not well done. They are - and having a few of them interspersed among other, varied daily activities would be fine - refreshing even. However, these videos constitute the great majority of the daily activities in this advent calendar, which just makes the overall experience of using it incredibly predictable and dull. Ultimately, it greatly detracts from any sense of anticipation or discovery when revealing the current day’s “surprise” (and how can it not, when we already know ahead of time what that activity is bound to be?). Now, I am not saying that there aren’t a lot of other activities included elsewhere in the calendar, but how they are used matters. Including a lot more of the interactive activities as the featured daily surprises, instead of treating them as stand-alone activities found in our Christmas home/drawing room, would really have gone a long way to break up the monotonous and routine sensation one gets when watching an endless parade of daily videos. And why such a fixation on videos anyway, JL? Realistically speaking, how many can a user absorb before boredom and disenchantment with the whole routine set in? Personally, I find that their overuse very much detracts from what once made this calendar so special: the sense of anticipation as to what the day’s featured *activity* would be, the fun of discovering it, and then…the joy of actually doing it! Finally, in view of the fact that your advent calendars are now much more expensive than they once were, it can hardly be considered inappropriate for a user to expect more from this app than just tedious predictability!

### 2/5 — Not up to standard

*2023-12-26*

I’ve bought the JL advent calendar for myself, family and friends for the past few years and they have been brilliant- last years Sussex advent was particular excellent with lots of content, built beautifully and lots of new things to do. In fact I still have it downloaded and play the games. I can’t say the same for this years. Very lacklustre and frankly boring. Friends ones stopped working after a couple of days, stating they needed to purchase to use but we managed to work around it by them logging in via my account- but still annoying and frustrating. The scene was quite boring and didn’t build well other than lights coming on in the house and other buildings really. . Way too many jigsaws - 5 in all and two match games - and nothing new from last year - even the final day was a damp squib! And the price was expensive too especially individually. Next years needs to look to be a vast improvement on this years else I won’t bother! I shan’t be keeping this years that’s for sure. You need to do better JL!

### 4/5 — Wonderful but not the best

*2023-12-26*

As easy as it can get to install. Loved finding the animals. Games are good, living room is good, decorating is good. Music (other than Sugarplum Fairy) may be as the period indicates but I don’t like it, mostly depressing. I buy these every year for family and friends. This one was the least liked due to the videos by everyone. Will still buy and give next year. Personally I liked the Christmas mart one from a few years ago the most. Thanks for not having anything horrible happen to any animals; but a child was worried about the mouse, and I was so saddened by that painting of the dog crammed in the outdoor dog house on snow. Again, maybe it fit the time and place, but here the owner would hopefully be in jail. No need to include these things.

### 4/5 — Warming to it

*2023-12-26*

I so loved last year’s Advent calendar, and I was excited for this year’s. The first few days I was sad, as it didn’t seem to live up to last year’s. But as the month went on,I warmed to it —to the point that I am really sad that Advent has now ended. By the end, I would place this right up there with last year’s. (But please bring back the zany find-a-gnome daily activity!)

### 2/5 — Advent calendar

*2023-12-25, version 1.1.3*

A complete waste of moves this year. Unable to access after the 3rd December.
Unable to login when requested. Asked to purchase again for the full experience.
Several messages of suggestion from ‘support’ all suggestions ineffective. Very disappointed.

### 5/5 — The Best One So Far

*2023-12-25*

I’ve really enjoyed this year’s calendar. Last year’s was a bit disappointing but this one was fab. So much detail! I loved the sketchbook animals and loved seeing new and old games together. Fabulous and the friends I bought one for loved it too.

### 5/5 — Wonderful as always

*2023-12-24*

Once again a wonderful piece of Christmas magic. Loved by three generations of our family and enjoyed every day of Advent. Thank you to all involved and keep up the great work.

### 5/5 — A Christmas Tradition

*2023-12-24, version 1.1.3*

Our family loves the advent calendar and this year’s is a wonderful delight taking us back to Edwardian days.

### 5/5 — Hours of delight

*2023-12-24*

This was simply everything special and fun one could hope for. The details were so good, and the variety of activities was unreal. I know I won’t be able to find this kind of satisfaction from an advent again, which is the only bad thing about it. BRAVO Jacquie

### 4/5 — Not as good

*2023-12-24*

This is the third advent calendar I have purchased. It’s nice but not as good as last year’s - thank goodness that could be reset so I could do it again.
There are glitches in two of the games which I have found frustrating.
Will buy next year but would like to see newer games please

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Subpar compared to previous years

*2024-01-04, version 1.1.3*

This years felt like an old recycled version from 10 years ago. Been a happy customer for many years - not sure why they downgraded the interactions so much.

### 1/5 — So disappointed

*2024-01-02, version 1.1.3*

I’ve had a Jacquie Lawson Advent calendar since 2013; it has one of my favorite Christmas traditions but not this year. This year’s calendar has no interactive community so is very boring and the videos were substandard. The one video that promised a festive holiday ball only showed generic figures entering the house — no actual ball! Next year I will preview the calendar before purchasing it.

### 1/5 — Compared to Sussex, 1 star

*2023-12-27, version 1.1.3*

Last year’s advent calendar was festive, had word puzzles and a challenging Find the Elf advent. This year, it’s dreary, lonely looking and is a constant reminder of the class system. I hope next year is better.

### 1/5 — Worst ever?

*2023-12-25, version 1.1.3*

Overloaded with too many daily videos that never open. Sick of looking at twirling circles that never open no matter how you. Tsp.
Too much packed in this version and app that was to fix bugs never helped. Big waste of money and time. 👎

### 1/5 — Could not download

*2023-12-24*

Despite paying for these and contacting the company l could not download the calendar or games even after trying to log in. I just kept getting “trying to log you in”,. Nothing happened despite trying different ways to download. Disappointing because l enjoy the advent calendar and the games.

### 1/5 — Won’t load

*2023-12-22, version 1.1.3*

Very frustrating, I was gifted this calendar, as in the previous 3 years, and all was well until 4 December when it decided that it wanted me to pay £7 to access any more baubles.
I deleted the app and reinstalled but the same happened and then it doesn’t recognise my login details, given up and deleted.

### 1/5 — Very Disappointing!

*2023-12-19*

This calendar is disgusting. I added the update because the first video - bringing in the tree never played right. After the update that was to fix problem, none of the daily videos opened. All I get is that infernal circle spinning around. No matter how you tap to start, circle just keeps going round and round. I hope the creator reads this because it is difficult to write to them on their web site.👎👎👎

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work and poor customer service

*2023-12-18, version 1.1.3*

This year’s experience is very disappointing compared to previous years. It is not possible to comment on the calendar because I have not been able to access and the customer service is either unresponsive or unhelpful. Quite frustrating.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work can’t get help

*2023-12-15, version 1.1.3*

App doesn’t let me sign in to access the calendar I received as a gift. Been over a week and I can’t get any help through their customer service. Terrible service

### 1/5 — Not worth the money

*2023-12-13*

The app is working fine a bit expensive for it however was willing to pay as had calendars in the past and they have been lovely and exciting and lots to do . I feel like I am being fobbed off with loads of 30 seconds videos everytime I open a door on the countdown to Xmas . I have done three activities out of 13 so far . Decorate the tree , decorate flower varse and make a wreathe . I am bored of the videos I need more activities and stimulation especially for the amount I paid . Each door I open I am expecting some kind of activity and I am disappointed . The graphics and nice and the era is lovely but save your money people and go and buy something else .

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Santa drop game

*2025-02-17, version 1.2.1*

I so enjoy the adventure calendar every year. This year both my husband and I have throughly been enjoying the Santa Drop game. It’s addictive! Please thank whoever created it.

### 5/5 — So good!

*2024-12-02, version 1.2.0*

Loved playing this every day my granny supris ed us with this and memories

### 5/5 — Amazing! Thank you!

*2024-11-30*

These are beautiful, fun, and sweet. We still play some of the games from this one even though the new one has been released! The hours of entertainment for the price is shocking.

It was worth the price for the music and art alone!

I read a few other reviews and the negative comments are completely unhinged. It’s tragic that people can be negative about frivolous Christmas fun.

### 5/5 — Your Advent Calendars are fun all year long

*2024-08-06*

I'm 'one of those' who keeps enjoying all your Advent Calendars throughout the year... I have purchased 5 so far. I just tried the Glogg recipe for mulled wine and it was amazing! The 2023 Edwardian Calendar was especially wonderful in that my 'sitting room' had every possible game, puzzle, and fun thing to do all crammed into one space. I can hardly wait for this year's calendar! 📆 🤩

### 5/5 — È bellissimo

*2024-04-01*

È fantastico lo voglio usare anche l’anno prossimo

### 5/5 — Wonderful Interactive Calendar

*2024-01-18, version 1.1.3*

Really enjoyed this imaginative and creative calendar with so many enjoyable games built into it. Artistically it’s a triumph.

### 5/5 — Stunning and cozy

*2024-01-01, version 1.1.3*

No idea what anybody is complaining about. The art is so lovely & i keep coming back to everything even days after Christmas.

### 5/5 — What 😮

*2023-12-30, version 1.1.3*

I can’t delete the app for new year’s!

### 5/5 — Got me in the Christmas spirit

*2023-12-30*

I looked forward to finding the different animals and birds each day. Loved this advent. My fourth year doing these and I look forward to many more.

### 5/5 — Loved it.

*2023-12-25, version 1.1.3*

This is my second advent calendar and I really enjoyed it. I loved finding the daily animals hidden. The games were fun, but I had a lot of trouble with the marble game. I’m sad that it has come to and end, but I will continue playing it.
