## What is JLPT Vocabulary Trainer?

JLPT Vocabulary Trainer is an application to learn and review Japanese vocabulary necessary for passing the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).

You don't have to know kanji or kana to use the application. You can learn Japanese words by listening to them spoken by the app. 

Learn vocabulary for any level of JLPT: N5, N4, N3, N2, N1.

There are 669 words for N5, 582 words for N4, 1803 words for N3, 1830 words for N2, and 3476 words for N1. 

JLPT Vocab Trainer uses an effective spaced repetition system that allows you not only to learn Japanese words but also never to forget them.

Learning progress is tracked for translation from Japanese into English and for English to Japanese separately. Which means that each word is considered to be two different cards to be learned. One card has Japanese for the front and English for the flip side. The other card has English on the front and Japanese on the back side.

### 2.6 — 2026-07-01

Study screens have been redesigned to make progress easier to understand at a glance. Each level now separates vocabulary words from study cards, highlights what is due today, and shows your session progress before you start.

During study sessions, the header now focuses on your current progress instead of global stats. Cards show clearer status labels, and when examples are available, you can see helpful context clues before revealing the answer — without spoiling it.

This update also includes layout improvements on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, plus a macOS fix for Settings reopening unexpectedly.

### 2.5 — 2026-06-18

N3 vocabulary cards now include hand-reviewed example sentences, romanized readings, clearer translations, and short learner notes. Word details have also been expanded into richer, scrollable dictionary-style pages with examples and learning information.

This update also improves empty search results and fixes issues with purchase buttons and the in-app rating prompt.

Study cards now show Japanese pitch accent information when available, helping you build more natural pronunciation alongside vocabulary recall.

This update also refines the pitch accent layout so markings are easier to read during study sessions, and improves progress sync reliability across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Existing study progress is handled more consistently, with better duplicate prevention and smoother cross-device convergence.

Includes general maintenance and compatibility improvements.
