### 4/5 — i have so much fun playing this

*2026-07-08, version 1.12*

but the lessons are a bit repetitive, so i think that they should add learning games

### 4/5 — Great Idea!!

*2026-02-12, version 1.11*

So far I love this game. As someone who is probably N3 level right now, I wish I had this when I first started. Duolingo doesn’t make this nearly as fun. I can’t wait to see what they do to implement kanji. めちゃ楽しかった🙂‍↕️

### 3/5 — Great, but missing content!

*2025-12-30*

Just a few lessons and it is over! Where's the rest of the content? The app is great, but we need more lessons.

### 5/5 — I really liked this APP. Really Fun

*2025-10-19*

I liked everything about this app. Now this APP just need lessons about work in an office or a factory in Japan.

### 5/5 — Best Japanese Language App on my phone!

*2025-10-09, version 1.11*

I’ve used probably 20+ Japanese language apps and this is by far the most immersive one! This is the only app that has made it where I actually understand when overhearing people speak Japanese. Hopefully they continue making more levels as the app has been both fun and made me learn!

### 5/5 — THIS IS GREAT

*2025-10-03, version 1.11*

I love this game so much 🥹🥹

### 5/5 — best RPG game

### 5/5 — Love this!

*2025-09-03, version 1.11*

I have been trying to learn Japanese a while through many apps. I love how this app gives me the feel of being in Japan and meeting people. Going to places that I only see in Anime or TV shows. It is an all inclusive feel. I would recommend this app.

### 5/5 — Love it

*2025-08-07, version 1.11*

Very helpful!

### 5/5 — Fun way to learn

*2025-06-22, version 1.5*

This app makes learning Japanese fun, the app is easy to use and very interactive.
Can’t wait for more!!!

### 5/5 — Is your learning Japanese this is a perfect app for you if your a bit younger

*2025-06-20*

I don’t know if it’s just for me but this app made me really interested in learning Japanese. It seemed boring in the beginning with hiragana and katakana but once you unlock more stuff it gets more fun. This app really helped me memorize katakana and hiragana and when I would forget a section I would retake the quiz for those characters. This app helped me learn grammar too. For example it helped me learn the difference between いきますといきません. And food words like えだまめ,ポテトチップス my favorite! I hope they add more becuase I don’t wanna end right here!!

### 5/5 — Really good

*2025-06-11*

Wish there were more games like this

### 5/5 — Makes learning fun

*2025-05-10*

You learn lots of new useful words. Love the setup of going to a school, citing a restaurant, and learning words related to those places. It gets easier to understand hiragana and katakana sentences too as a beginner. Great job teaching kana as well. I suggest writing down all the words and phrases you learn and studying like that

### 5/5 — Great way to learn

*2025-05-06*

Still on my hiragana/katana part, but this is the only app that for some reason actually makes me remember kana. I think it is because after couple of rows you also have a practice of reading the words. Have to say though, the original kana sensei apps (especially cute tune from hiraganasensei2) were much more cute in terms of design :)

### 5/5 — Loved it!

*2025-04-16, version 1.11*

Its definitely not the main tool for learning Japanese but it really helped me as a beginner. It was fun to play in between my studying

### 5/5 — Currently using this and I love it

*2025-03-04*

It has helped me improve and memorise hiragana and currently katakana. It also makes it a game so you have fun using your learning.

### 3/5 — I like it but…

*2025-02-11, version 1.10*

Overall it’s a very good game, I like the layout and everything but my only problem is I finally passed my challenge 2 and quiz 1 and both told me that the rewards were already collected which they weren’t cus it was my first time passing and my money keeps disappearing and I’m not buying anything?

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — backpack errors?

*2026-05-25*

my backpack deletes powerups/health items i recieve, so now i am permanently stuck on 1 heart. makes the game unusable.

### 1/5 — Typos

*2025-03-16, version 1.11*

Too many answers with typos. This forces you to use MP (rare or $$$) to see the wrong answer just so you can progress in the game. There are more answers with typos than given MP.

### 1/5 — Not helpful

*2024-06-08, version 1.5*

Language apps aren’t helpful if it doesn’t let you set what level you are. I don’t want to start over at kana when I’ve been studying for 2 years.

### 1/5 — No materials

*2022-09-08*

There is literally no materials available in the app. I don’t understand what I should do in there to access study material. I clicked everywhere. I only have Town and there a shop and an inn, but when I tap three people in the inn there is just english introduction of each of them and that’s it

### 1/5 — In-App Kauf geht nicht

*2022-03-22*

Die App hat ein riesen Problem. Der In-App Kauf kommt nicht in der App an. Es wird zwar das Erweiterungspaket angezeigt, aber in der App selber nicht gutgeschrieben.
Finger weg!

**Developer response:** Hello, sorry about that, please send us a message at hellobrunchy@gmail.com and we will help fix the issue or refund the purchase. Thank you!

### 2/5 — More of a computer game than a learning tool

*2025-03-10*

This app is so gamified that it gets in the way of systematic learning. Stamina, rare items, points—this isn’t Pokemon red for goodness sake

### 2/5 — Amazing Concept. Too Many Glitches

*2024-12-30, version 1.7*

This app looks like such a fun and unique way to learn Japanese, and the design is very nice. However I’ve already encountered so many issues in the first 30 min of playing. The game didnt give me half of the starting supplies it said (no 500 starting yen), the ad didnt give me stamina and now says I can’t watch anymore, and when I accept rewards half the time they dont go into my bag. Unfortunatelt will have to delete.

### 2/5 — I die when I’m learning

*2024-07-05, version 1.5*

This has L rizz

### 2/5 — Not what I had hoped for

*2024-03-19, version 1.4*

I don’t like being required to go through matching hiragana to English letters. Hiragana characters have sounds that are associated with them which are not exactly like sounds represented by English letters. These Japanese learning apps need to stop pushing romaji on everyone.

### 2/5 — Nice art, not really a game, fundamentally useless

*2024-01-25*

Not really a “game” and you don’t really “play” anything and despite boasting it’s not another flashcard blah blah, it actually is but it’s actually worse than that unfortunately.

It forces you to “learn” katakana and hiragana otherwise you won’t unlock kanji etc, it’s method for teaching are you guessed it, multiple choice flash cards, quite possibly the worst way to learn and there are far better methods to learning kana with mnemonics (tofugu being an example) which take days vs the months if not longer that it will take here in this app using this method of rote boring learning.

You meet and talk with people in the “adventure” they will often have an initial sentence in Japanese and then after in English maybe with a few Japanese words mixed in later on, trouble is, it’s not clear if the English sentence below is reiterating what the Japanese one is saying above and I can see beginners getting frustrated at their inability to read the Japanese given that the so called game has not covered the words or grammar used. These people in the adventure will often give a quiz or test or whatever and this is where the real problem with this app is…. They present words in katakana or hiragana (regardless of whether they are usually written that way or not) and then you type that same word out in romaji… if like me your scratching your head then your not alone, not only is learning and using romaji an arguably pointless thing to do in the first place but it’s effectively a mirror of the hiragana or katakana on display making it doubly pointless, to make matters worse the app only accepts one style of romaji and very inconsistent one at that so good news for everyone out there that use other programs which interpret and convert you typed romaji input into hiragana or katakana and if you write in a different style as you fail things you actually got correct over and over and over, for example they look for sha only not sia shya etc etc and there is no option to interpret and convert to hiragana/katakana on the fly instead. After you pointlessly type the answer out it briefly shows what the word means for a split second, clean rinse repeat, so yeah it basically another rote flashcard system, I couldn’t tell you any of the last 100 words I did….. no mnemonics, nothing.

After hours I get to a pub in the adventure and I see a “pub quiz” and I think FINALLY maybe it’s an actual game but alas no, it’s the exact same as above with the hiragana or katakana on display and you typing in the romaji…. Maybe this wouldn't be 1000% pointless if this worked in both directions ie. Showed the word and you type the meaning etc etc but no, and even then that would only be a 1% improvement of the existing.

Kanji is taught in a similar manner, your shown the kanji list, your expected to just learn it rote, I see no game, then like above you do a quiz and type the romaji…. If your looking for the most inefficient way to learn kanji then this is the app for you👍

I find the bag and inventory system a little annoying but I like the rpg elements I suppose but it’s like tacking rpg elements on to nothing tbh because as mentioned I’ve found no game yet.

Maybe there is a game in there somewhere but I haven’t found it yet, everything so far has been the same boring and pointless look at a word and type it out. There is no structure and I don’t really feel like there are any achievements…. It’d be nice to learn a few words and a grammar point and then for the app to forcibly hammer those points home until it’s sure you got them before allowing you to proceed …. Ideally with an actual game… before finally showing the Japanese sentence or story in the “adventure” so you could be rewarded by being able to actually comprehend what’s being said.

This is all constructive criticism. All in all this app needs a lot of work. The arts nice though but the execution is lacking.

### 5/5 — Most fun and educational Japanese App I’ve found yet!

Had so much fun I was sad when it ended although I finished it quick since I was already well versed in Japanese N5 levels.

### 5/5 — Great interactions

### 5/5 — Best Japanese learning App!

*2026-04-21, version 1.12*

JLRPG Quest is the best Japanese RPG learning app on the AppStore! It’s so much fun! I discovered the app many years ago. I always come back to test my Japanese language skills and learn more. JLRPG Quest app changes everything for my language learning journey. Thank you to the creators!

### 5/5 — Fun and useful!

*2026-02-28*

The app makes it fun to learn while also giving you challenges to test how much you can memorize each day. I like the way things are structured in the game and how you need to 100% pass before moving to the next subject. I’m enjoying the game so far and I’ve learned a lot from it. Would recommend if you want a fun way to learn how to read Japanese.

### 5/5 — Fun

### 5/5 — Fun

### 5/5 — Good beginner app

*2025-11-10*

Been using this app for the last three years, I’ve only started really using it in the last couple months cause it was new when I first found it, and there were still things being updated and it’s very good if you’re focusing on learning new vocabulary and really wanting it to stick. i’m a sort of person that learned with games and this really hits that aspect. It asks you questions and also has you read in Japanese which I really like cause not a lot of apps let you read Japanese unless you pay for it. The app itself is still being updated but if you’re looking for something casual to start you off on absolutely not knowing a thing this is a good app to start.
