### 1/5 — Changes Tempting Me to Drop Subscription

*2026-07-06*

I am a digital subscriber. I’ve written to customer service twice in the last week, and I requested the comments be forwarded to the technical staff at Journal-News.

I have an iPhone 12 mini and have a iPad Air 3, with iOS 26.5 on both. I usually read the Journal-News in the app and use Safari as my browser.

I have been a subscriber for years. In the past, I have had very few issues. However, the app has so many problems now that I am considering cancelling my subscription. There was some initial problems when the Journal-News combined all of the news for many areas. The pages were haphazard and it was beginning to be difficult to find things. They weren’t logically where they should be.

NAVIGATION DOES NOT EXIST

Now the app has gone through major changes. Navigation is one of the first things to go. There’s always been—up until now—a way to find out where the “local” “national” “op eds” “business” and so-called “life” sections. I could find them because after I clicked on the paper with the correct date, I could choose to go page by page or click on that area and I got information about where the things above were. I could find the comics and the puzzles.

Now the only indication of where the reader is is a tiny “A 2” or similar notations on the top of the paper. It is useless, though, because the only reason I can see anything is because I scrolled through one page after another. No big numbers inform the readers where to go for a particular thing.

I don't even see a way to enter a page number—not that I would, since I do not know where anything is. And if you get bounced back to the beginning of the paper, you have to do the same thing again.

The icons at the top (or bottom—they have moved) don’t help. I tried to cut an article but that didn’t work. I don’t know why those icons exist. The icon labeled “pages” might be a guide if you have a large magnifying glass-they are the whole pages in miniature form.

An aside: I tried reading the paper on the website, but it is no better. It has the same problems the app has except that today I saw decent-sized page numbers at the top of the pages on the web, but not the app.

SELECTION OF ARTICLES TO READ OR PRINT:

I used to be able to click on an article and it appeared in its own space. It was in larger type, so it was easier to read. Now several things might happen, and the reader doesn't have any control over it. None of the things are helpful.

First, if the article does show up in a window, it is virtually illegible. The type is smaller than the ePaper’s and it isn't as dark as the ePaper is. Second, sometimes the whole page goes into a window—nothing is isolated to read. In fact, when that happens, part of the page is darker that the rest. Finally, sometimes nothing happens at all.

APP CHANGES ELIMINATE CHOICES IN WHAT TO READ:

The changed app makes it impossible to be selective about what the reader sees. I only read parts of the paper. I do not want to be forced to look at every page. Now I don’t know which page is of interest to me.

PUZZLE PROBLEMS:

If you are someone who uses the ePaper and plans to work the puzzle(s), you are probably out of luck. I can’t isolate the puzzles and I don’t see a way to print them if I did. The problems with accessing the puzzles and other areas to get a better view or to print them started suddenly. Tomorrow is Sunday, but I doubt I will be able to access the Sunday puzzles.

Yes, I know I can get separate apps for puzzles of different sorts; I have a number of them. But part of my enjoyment of having a newspaper is working the puzzles.

COMICS:

The panels don’t enlarge, or get isolated, so they are difficult to read if you have vision problems.

I would like to address 2 things that I think the Journal-News has addressed. The big ad that was popping up on my screen in the app has been absent for a few days now. Also, I haven’t been forced to select my choice of privacy options every time I sign in. That gets old, and if you are a subscriber, the Journal-News should only have to ask that one time before it has a record of your choice.

I’ve been patient with the Journal-News app for a long time while they were working on updating it. But if this is the best it can do, I will end my subscription. Maybe someone will wake up eventually and fix all the issues.

### 1/5 — Terrible update

*2026-06-25*

Trying to read the news is frustrating! There are ads at the top and bottom of my iPad screen. The ads take up half the screen now. Terrible!

### 2/5 — Good newspaper, app is horrible

*2026-05-24*

The Journal News app has been a skeleton of its former self for months, but we were told that it was intentional while they improved it, and they asked our patience and said that in the interim the Dayton Daily app would remain fully functional. Well today the update for both arrived and after I applied it to JN it still doesn't allow me to bookmark articles from the paper as it used to, and it also deleted all my previous article bookmarks. Gone! What's more, it was extremely difficult trying to login and it didn't keep me logged in even after I did finally get in. (Did not have any problems on the DDN app login which is still previous version!) The new digital newspaper format (now called eEdition) is a horrible version that judders and changes, and it's presented inside multiple frames, including bright blinking ads and huge menu bars that take up so much space the window for viewing the actual content on my iPhone is now only two and half inches! I just want the app to eDeliver the daily paper and allow me to read it with ease and bookmark articles for rereading later. I can barely read the content with the new update, and the ads, multiple logins, failed bookmarks, etc are a disservice to the journalists and others who provide the content. I want to support this newspaper, but what good is my subscription if I cannot access the content?

### 1/5 — Everything under a paywall now

*2025-09-26*

No longer can read any articles at all without a pay subscription. Just another way to be nickel and dime d. Will be deleting as it’s now totally useless. I can understand it being that way for some of the content but not all. Goodbye 👋

### 2/5 — Latest update broke bookmarks

*2025-08-07*

UPDATE: It's August 2025, a year since I left a five star review congratulating DDN and JN for getting the apps functioning smoothly while simultaneously not fixing what isn't broken. It was wonderful while we had it, but they have recently changed the app, and not for the good. Since the latest update, all my previous bookmarked Articles have been moved to Pages instead of Articles in My Content, and they don't open, except as a blank white screen! In a likely related problem, the bookmark icon is now missing altogether on all current digital app Paper articles so I no longer can bookmark new articles either! Oddly, the bookmark icon does appear for whole pages while reading the Paper, and those bookmarks actually function, though that is of no use to me. Bookmark icons are still available when reading the Live News section, but those bookmarks do not function. I have written twice to each the Journal News and the Dayton Daily News about the issues, but they have not replied.

### 1/5 — Paywall

*2025-07-29*

Version 18 added a paywall that made all stories unreadable without subscription, FYI.

### 5/5 — Journal News Please don't change a thing 😊

*2024-07-04*

Journal News and Dayton Daily are reliable newspapers with apps that function well. I think both content and quality are very good. The apps were bumpy going a few years back, but all has been working smoothly this past year, and I am grateful. Please, don't change a thing. I am so frustrated with a number of other apps that keep "improving" with updates that only succeed in cluttering the experience with advertising, bias, and fluff that ruin both content and experience. Keep up the good work!

### 1/5 — No longer functions since version 14 update

*2022-06-21, version 14*

It used to be a reliable app that I used daily to read our local newspaper. Not one aspect of the app functions anymore, and I have corresponded with JN DDN many times and uninstalled, reinstalled, jumped through hoops providing screen shots etc, everything they asked, and now, not only can I not read the newspaper, but all my settings, bookmarks, personalization is lost too. They don't seem very concerned either, suggesting that I should "just go online and read it at their website". I am a paid subscriber. What's more, the app used to work fine. It's been weeks since this began, and I am really bummed that I may have to cancel my subscription as the app was my only real option.

### 1/5 — 5 to 6 second swipe time on my iPad

*2020-12-12*

There is a 5 to 6 second swipe time on my iPad. This has not always been the case. May be tied into the bottom ads loading but not sure if that is the whole story. This happened once before and was fixed, but the delay is back. This is a killer situation for me. I can view on a web browser version but that is not as smooth that this app used to be.

### 3/5 — Ads at bottom of digital page

*2020-10-26*

The ads at the bottom of the screen on the digital version are maddening. They take too long to load. I like to be able to to scan through the pages and now I have to wait until the ads load in each page before I can do anything with the page. I don’t know how much longer I will put up with those before I cancel my subscription. It’s maddening.
