I used to use the website but now, at a glance, I can find moon, moon shadow and GRS transits at a glance - and not even have to convert from UT!! Don't understand this app. ### 2/5 — Needs an update badly *2024-12-05* Sure would be nice if they updated this and the Saturn moons apps. In particular, they need to allow greater zoom range to fit all the moons on the screen when they are far from the planet, and the Great Red Spot on Jupiter has drifted enough that the app no longer is helpful for finding out when it will be visible. ### 2/5 — Very thin application *2013-01-25, version 1.0* This app is disappointing in how little it does. Besides the main display of Jupiter and its four visible moons' positions, it has very brief descriptions and a few photos of the planet and the four moons. It is far from a complete reference on Jupiter. For example, it mentions the fact that Jupiter has more than 60 moons, but contains no other information about them. Compared to other full featured astronomy apps like Star Walk, Safari Pro, or Luminos, each of which costs only a few dollars more, this app delivers very little for the money. ### 3/5 — GRS transit timings way off *2022-10-30* The longitude of the Great Red Spot drifts continually and the app should be updated more frequently so that GRS transit timings are more accurate. Currently they are about 50 minutes too early. ### 3/5 — Decent - needs date/time control *2018-05-05, version 1.1* This WOULD be a good app if it let you set your own time, rather than going off UT. Because that’s a 7 hour difference, when it gives me “today’s” events, it’s useless to me because technically anything I’m going to look at tonight is “tomorrow” according to the app. But you can’t switch to any date other than today on the “Events” page (if I’m wrong, please someone show me how!). You can move back and forth in time on the chart page, but not the event page, which is the page that would actually be useful for organizing my viewing. ### 3/5 — NOT for iPhone X! *2018-02-02, version 1.1* I love this app, but I can’t use it now that I have an iPhone X. One glaring omission is an option to enter another time or date manually, instead of tapping, tapping at minute and hour intervals to get other dates and times. ### 3/5 — Nice app but a little pricy... *2013-01-23* Just bought and tried the app, pretty nice, acurate and usefull in preparing for observation of Jupiter events... This app helps me figure it out. It also helps me plan ahead to see if I can capture the great red Spot that night. I was viewing a shadow transit across Jupiter when I spotted what I suspected was the GRS, so I then opened the Jupiter's Moons App and it immediately confirmed my sighting. ### 5/5 — Great app and very useful *2013-11-06* I liked the old java tool on the Internet by S&T but that didn't combine the movement of the moons with the Great Red Spot. This app combines all that plus gives a very good model of what you can expect to see at any given point in time. Very very useful for GRS location at times when the seeing is poor. Any plans to plot locations of additional satellites? ### 5/5 — useful and easy to use *2012-12-23, version 1.0* This is a simple app that does one thing well: it shows and tells you when Jupiter's four Galilean moons and their shadows will be moving across Jupiter's face, when the moons will be passing behind Jupiter or through Jupiter's shadow, and when the Great Red Spot will be in the middle of Jupiter as seen from Earth, and thus most easily visible through a telescope. I've been using the tables in Sky and Telescope Magazine to plan when to see Galilean moon transits, but this app makes it much easier and quicker -- you don't have to scan through a long table of fine print and mentally translate from Universal Time to your local time zone. It's all right on the screen with a clear diagram of what everything will look like through your telescope, and you can adjust the display to show an inverted or mirror image, to match the view through your instrument. The supplemental information and images of Jupiter and the moons are well chosen and helpful, but the main screen is the reason to get this app. As other reviewers have said, it would be nice to be able to set parameters for alerts, e.g. a shadow transit or occultation between 7 pm and 11 pm local time. Another quibble: this app only displays in landscape mode, which makes sense to get the widest diagram of Jupiter and the moons, but I would like to be able to shift into portrait mode because that's how I hold my ipad when I'm at the telescope. ### 5/5 — Very Useful App *2012-12-19, version 1.0* I volunteer at two public observatories.
