But after I won the first couple of games and then the computer consistently scored high hands to my low hands, I became much more suspicious. Flashy dealing, colors for scores and the board is harder to follow. I liked it before because it was plain and basic. Now there are changes that do nothing to enhance the game. Cribbage is cribbage. Yes it does seem a bit slanted towards the computer but oh well. I’m more upset about changes made that didn’t need to be made. Deleted the app. ### 3/5 — Recent update disappointing *2024-02-18* I enjoyed having a no frills version of Cribbage until the 2.0.1 update both erased the previous scores (games won) and more importantly, changed the color of the dialogue text and numbers on the cribbage board, to white (!) Against a light background, it’s now super hard to read. Made me go find a new app. **Developer response:** I believe the white (instead of black) numbers are related to Dark display mode on your device. Please update to version 2.0.2 and see if text is now black in both Dark and Light mode. ### 3/5 — Tony *2024-02-18, version 1.2.2* I did,enjoy the game,but I found that the al scored too highly,far to often,and always at critical times, otherwise good game,work in progress, ### 3/5 — Could be better *2023-07-13* Loved having no ads and played over 100 games. However the computer wins 80%. Noticed the top card always seems to favor the computers hand. They’ve scored 20-24 a couple times almost every game making it impossible to catch up and win. I get skunked constantly. I play irl too and the issue isn’t my strategy, it’s the computer getting favored 99% if the time. **Developer response:** I can only assure you the deck is shuffled randomly before each deal, and the starter card is cut randomly, too. The computer player does NOT know the starter card prior to discarding to the crib, nor does it use any statistical probability calculations. ### 3/5 — Buggy *2023-07-11* I have noticed that the game will sometimes just jump right over adding my points so of course the game is going to win. It was very frustrating. **Developer response:** I have not encountered this "bug" throughout much testing. Should other reviewers report the same issue, it will be investigated again. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not “just” cribbage *2025-01-17* I don’t know why someone can’t just make a truly random game of cribbage. This version is ridiculous. You and/or your opponent will virtually always have a great hand, impossibly good. The cards are obviously manipulated. It’s not fun. **Developer response:** The statistical probability of getting a "great hand" is always the same on every deal. It makes no difference how many times in a row you or the opponent get a great hand. The probability of a great hand on the next deal is still the same. For more on this, see "gambler's fallacy". ### 1/5 — Unusable *2024-11-23, version 2.1.4* It just keeps giving itself unbelievably good hands and me useless hands. Cribbage *2025-03-17* Took down my review about how “honest” this game is. After seeing the app deal six-12 point or greater hands to itself IN A ROW I reached the conclusion that nobody is that lucky. Two stars. **Developer response:** The statistical probability of getting a "great hand" is always the same on every deal. It makes no difference how many times in a row you or the opponent get a great hand. The probability of a great hand on the next deal is still the same. For more on this, see "gambler's fallacy". ### 2/5 — It Starts With the Cuts *2025-01-09* For the fun of it I counted cuts I won and cuts the game won. The game won 9 cuts in a row and 13 of 15 cuts. This happens all the time. Odds of this happening with a real deck of cards are astronomically low. Game developers need to do better. **Developer response:** The odds of winning the cut are always 50/50. It makes no difference how many times in a row you or the AI player has won it. I’ve never seen so many double runs and 14 cribs! Gimme a break!! Lol ### 3/5 — PK *2026-07-24* SO frustrating for a first time Cribbage learner. I rarely win and I know that I am not playing badly! The cards are always in their favor. ### 3/5 — OK for Free *2026-05-19* This is an OK game for free, with no frills. LOSER ALWAYS gets the next crib; something is wrong with the logic of the crib. Additionally, I sure wish the deal were actually random, becuase there are far too many large hands which does not typically happen IRL **Developer response:** The deck is shuffled before each deal with the Swift shuffle() function (Swift is the programming language used in IOS apps). This function is a widely-used random order generator. In the app, cards are always dealt off the top of the deck. Actually it is the real-life game that does not produce a genuine random deck, as a couple of hand shuffles does not accomplish this. ### 3/5 — Where are the 5’s? *2025-10-07* I think I’m a better player than posting a .333 batting average. I’m wondering why it seems like the 5 cards are so scarce for my draws. are you reading this? **Developer response:** The deck is randomly shuffled before each deal, and the starter card is randomly chosen. The odds of you receiving a 5 are the same in each hand, no matter how many times in the past you did not get one. For more on this see "Gambler's Fallacy". ### 3/5 — Decent Version *2025-03-27* I’d love a few more options for the display and some settings (including seeing the board in landscape mode), mostly the issue that I have is that the computer plays beyond perfectly with the most incredible luck. It’s crazy. **Developer response:** The game is truly random and the AI player is only as good as I can program it. But I've come to realize that players are going to believe what they want to believe. Nice job! ### 5/5 — I really appreciate this game! *2024-11-30* Thank you for making an ad free, no frills version of cribbage. Even though there’s not a difficulty setting, it seems to be just right for me. I’ve played 20 games so far, and right now it’s tied at 10 wins apiece. The only suggestion I would make is for a few cosmetic settings - change the background board color, larger cards (maybe allow landscape?), different card backs/fronts, things like that. But it’s still great the way it is, and I’m grateful that you made a fun, completely free version! **Developer response:** I'm glad you are enjoying the app. That is correct, there is no difficulty setting. The deck is randomly shuffled before each deal (I believe more truly random than hand-shuffling an actual deck), and the AI opponent does not "peek" at any cards. I don't see any point in "rigging" the game, and besides, it would be more cumbersome to program. Larger cards and landscape are standard on iPad. In order to fit on small iPhone models only portrait is available. ### 5/5 — Count glitch *2024-05-29* Loving this ad-free game! Wanted to let you know about something weird that just happened. New deal (opponent) turned a jack for two points, which was correctly scored. I turned a ten of spades as my first card and received two points. Don’t know why. **Developer response:** Thank you for reporting this. I have corrected a few bugs and released Version 2.1.4. Hopefully this has eliminated the scoring error that occurred. ### 5/5 — Plain and simple cribbage, just as the name implies *2024-03-31* I have played cribbage all my life, taught by both my parents and grandparents who played classic cribbage all of their lives. I have played 8 games so far and am ahead of the computer, 6 to 2. I am sure that will change as time goes on because random card deals play a big role in how well any player does. There is certainly strategy involved in playing cribbage but if you get a crummy hand, you simply aren’t going to make many points except maybe in pegging during the play. My husband and I play frequently and both of us have experienced periods as long as a year where we continually lose (with few exceptions). Then, things change and the other of us starts losing. The “luck” of the cards truly matters in the game. My only complaint is that the game awards a pony for the “right jack” in the crib, which - as I understand the rules- is only allowed to be counted in the hand. ️Thank you for a truly entertaining game! **Developer response:** Thank you for highlighting the random element in all card games, cribbage included. When a given event does not occur in one hand (or the last 100 hands), it is NOT more likely to occur in the next hand. The governing probability of that event is always the same. I am not familiar with the term "pony" (spell check error?); it sounds like what I know as "Nobs". The app is designed to follow rules of the American Cribbage Congress (www.cribbage.org), which defines Nobs as "Jack of the same suit as the starter card, in either the hand or crib, counts one point". ### 5/5 — Still love it, but… *2024-02-17* I like the newest version and thanks for paying attention to the ease of use, however…I can’t read the text in the yellow dialog balloon which gives the score while you are playing. The text is white on the light yellow. Should be black? **Developer response:** Thank you for calling this to my attention. Yes, the text needs to be black. I wonder if your device is in Dark display mode? (If so, the board numbers 0, 10, 20, ... 120 are also white instead of black). If this is indeed the issue, it should be fixed in version 2.0.2. ### 5/5 — Excellent game no ads *2024-02-12* Aside from the computer beating me 70% of the time this is an excellent app. No frills but also no adds. However, since the last update, each time you leave the game part way through, instead of returning to the previous position in game that game disappears and you have to start over again. I’ve noticed that while I often get 0-point cribs, the computer never seems to no matter what garbage I give it. The computer routinely scores more points in its hand alone than I get in my hand and the crib combined.
