More complicated and expensive what’s app or groupme

For some reason I am not getting notification alerts with this app.  They just stopped.  I get the messages but no alert so I have to constantly check.  I have turned notifications off and on but it makes no difference.  Not great when you are relying on it for team sports etc.  would be much better off using What’s App!
