## What is Kakebo?

Kakebo is a Japanese method of mindful spending and saving that helps you track your income and expenses, achieve your savings goals, and helps you become more aware of your financial habits so that you can make better decisions. Kakebo is for any individual looking to better manage their household finances, students who are starting their first job, or children who need a way to manage their gifts and allowance. Kakebo provides visibility into where your money is going.

We know what you’re thinking. There are already budgeting apps out there that connect your bank and credit card accounts and automate reports for you. That automation is very convenient, but it detaches you from reality and offers little accountability. How many times have you swiped your debit card throughout the day only to later be surprised by your ending balance?

We’ve found that because of this automation people aren’t actually taking the time to review their finances, create financial goals or track their expenses. Kakebo requires a little more work upfront. We believe that by putting thought into evaluating our finances by manually recording expenses and savings goals helps fix these ideas more firmly in our minds making our money management more tangible. This is why reflection is a critical step in the Kakebo method because learning comes about not from doing, but from thinking about what we do. Being mindful (aware) of our financial habits helps us realize where we are, what we want, and what matters most.

The average person checks their phone every 6 minutes and touches their screens 2,617x per day. Imagine what you could do if only a fraction of your daily phone time was spent logging your expenses.

Your Kakebo allows you to track your daily spending wisely by recording your expenses and assigning them to a category. Forming the habit of recording an expense immediately after you transact allows you to be mindful of your spending and the progress you are making towards your savings goals. At the end of the month, you review and compare your budget to reality.

Kakebo adopts these simple, effective and proven century-old Japanese principles and transforms this method into a digital solution encouraging you to learn your spending habits, save for what’s important and regain control of your finances.

### 3/5 — Great concept, needs improvement

*2021-11-04, version 1.1.3*

I like having a digital version of a Kakebo and will continue to use this for the time being, but the app is not without issues.
There is an option to add reoccurring charges with a date that it is set to hit. The only problem is, the system then adds this charge every day which throws off everything. I opened the app this morning and was stunned to see that I was 3k over budget…and then realized that my rent entry had been duplicated several times.

There is also no option to edit the name of or delete categories once they have been deleted. I accidentally created an expense category when I meant to create a savings goal and now I can’t remove the error.

Again, love the idea and I’ll keep with it because this is more convenient than paper but it needs some minor fixes.

### 1/5 — Did not bring me joy

*2020-06-18, version 1.1.1*

After downloading the app and registering with my email address, I waited for the confirmation email so I could begin using it. ...and waited. ...and waited. ...and waited some more. The email never arrived, and I was locked out of the app.
Very disappointing and makes me wonder if this app is legitimate.

### 1/5 — Not a good app

*2020-04-25, version 1.1.0*

I really wanted to like this app because the Kakebo concept and no longer wanted to keep tracking in a paper book. The functionality of this app is terrible. Reoccurring itemizations either don’t show up or duplicate themselves on dates that aren’t even related to a date I entered. It is cumbersome (takes multiple clicks) to go back to a previous month and this is amplified if you forget to add several expenses to that previous month. This app is just not worth your time.

### 5/5 — Skeptical at first, now I consider every expense

*2020-01-15, version 1.0.0*

As someone who LOVES automation, I thought the concept of Kakebo would be antiquated.

With Apple Pay, Amazon 1-click, etc., I was purchasing things without even realizing it. Kakebo has me in the habit of adding my purchases manually, much like health apps have me entering my calorie intake.

They say writing things down helps you remember even if you don’t re-read what you wrote down. Entering expenses on Kakebo has, in turn, made me contemplate what is needed when I am about to checkout.

Funny enough, the reduction of expenses has also been a reduction in calorie intake for me. Opting out of a pastry before the morning meeting = double win!

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2020-01-15, version 1.0.0*

App is very easy to work with and perfect to organize and calculate finances.
