## What is KakiKata?

Learn to write Japanese kanji by hand, from memory, with the correct stroke order.

KakiKata is a kanji writing app for anyone learning Japanese. You write every stroke with a finger or a stylus, and handwriting recognition checks each stroke as you go, so a wrong habit never gets the chance to set in. It covers all 2,136 jōyō kanji, from the ones you meet at JLPT N5 all the way to N1. Your handwriting appears like ink on paper, so writing practice feels like the real thing.

Learning a new kanji

Most kanji apps only ask you to recognize characters. KakiKata is built around writing them. Every lesson starts with you tracing a new character, and the guidance fades little by little until you can write the kanji from memory in your own hand. Do that enough and the stroke order turns into muscle memory.

See exactly where your writing went wrong

Write a stroke out of order, or one stroke too many? KakiKata replays your handwriting next to the correct version and highlights any strokes that are out of place, so you can fix your stroke order on the next try.

Writing from memory

Reviews challenge you to write the character from memory, given only its meaning and readings, and you find out straight away if you got it right. Being able to recognize a kanji and being able to write it are two different skills, and reviews train the writing. Our spaced repetition system brings each kanji back right before you’d forget it. You can see what’s due over the coming week, and KakiKata will remind you when reviews are waiting.

Levels

The jōyō kanji come in short levels, in JLPT order. Once you know most of the kanji in a level, you unlock the next one. Each character moves through five mastery stages, from Initiate to Master, and the Progress tab shows how far you’ve come.

Every character in one place

The app lists all 2,136, each with its meanings, on’yomi and kun’yomi readings, stroke order playback and handwriting practice. Open any one to revisit it or practice writing it on its own, whenever you like.

Free to start

Your first 99 kanji are free and include every kanji on the JLPT N5 list. There’s no time limit, so take your time. After that, one subscription unlocks the rest of the jōyō kanji. Sign in and your progress is saved to the cloud, so your Japanese writing practice moves with you to a new phone or tablet.

### 4/5 — Good bones but room to expand features

*2025-06-27*

This app solves a gap in my kanji study that very few apps solve for - recall. Most kanji apps are designed around recognition of the kanji and tests your ability to recognize its meaning and reading. I’ve been searching for a good resource to help me recall the kanji and make me write it out.

What I would love for this app to improve on is:

1. There is no way for me to practice outside of my reviews. I wish I could free drill the kanjis I’ve already learned to help reinforce them outside of the schedule in the reviews.

2. I wish there was an option for me to drill them in context vs just using the English keyword. For example, using a sentence that showed a missing kanji with the hiragana and asked me to write the kanji.

**Developer response:** This reply is long overdue, but thanks for providing your feedback. I have recently resumed active development of the app and the points you called out are definitely things that I will be addressing in updates in the near future. I'll reply back here again once I push updates that resolve the issues you mentioned. Thanks again and I hope that your Japanese studies are going well!

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2025-01-28*

I’ve been trying to learn Japanese for a while now, however never found the resource I preferred. The app is simple, however effective. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to start learning Japanese!
