## What is kama sona?

Toki Pona is a complete language with 137 words, created by Sonja Lang in 2001. You can learn the entire vocabulary in weeks and the entire grammar in an afternoon. kama sona ("come to know") gives you everything you need to do it.

THE COMPLETE DICTIONARY
All 137 words, with plain-English meanings, a real example sentence for each, audio pronunciation, search, and category filters. Every word also shows its sitelen pona glyph.

SMART FLASHCARDS
Spaced repetition schedules each word based on how well you know it. Words you miss come back sooner. Three modes: Toki Pona to English, English to Toki Pona, and sitelen pona reading practice.

QUIZZES AND GAMES
Multiple-choice meaning and word quizzes, a listening quiz, and a timed matching game.

THE WHOLE GRAMMAR IN 11 SHORT LESSONS
Word order, the particles li, e, pi, and la, questions, numbers, and the sitelen pona writing system. Toki Pona has no plurals, no tenses, and no irregular verbs.

SENTENCE PRACTICE
100 real sentences to translate in both directions, from beginner to advanced, with word-by-word glosses when you need them.

A NOTE ON PRONUNCIATION
Every word and sentence is spoken with Toki Pona's real stress pattern, always on the first syllable. The app uses the best voice installed on your iPhone. For the clearest sound, download a higher-quality Italian voice: open Settings, then Accessibility, then Spoken Content (called Read & Speak on newer versions of iOS), then Voices, then Italian, and download any Enhanced or Premium voice. kama sona will pick it up automatically. Italian is used because its five pure vowels are the closest match to Toki Pona's.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Your progress is stored on your device. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. The app works entirely offline.

Toki Pona was created by Sonja Lang. This app is an independent study tool.

### 5/5 — ilo pona! good tool!

*2026-07-15*

as someone who has previously studied toki pona independently, i can't say whether this would be good for someone who is learning from scratch, but i think it is a really helpful and accessible tool for someone who is looking to practice! i appreciate all the ways you can review flashcards, whether it's toki pona to english or vice versa, and especially like the addition of sitelen pona. the integrated dictionary is wonderful. the practice sentences are also very good!

some of the audio is wrong, which can be expected when it's done by computer and not a person. so sometimes listening exercises can be difficult. not the end of the world

it'd be awesome if more sentences were added eventually, or perhaps even short stories. perhaps it's beyond the scope of the app, which is fine. again, i think this is a great tool to supplement one's journey! thanks for all the hard work!

Unfortunately, when developing apps with text-to-speech, we only have access to the built-in AVSpeechSynthesizer of the iPhone which is not the most natural sounding by default, and Apple doesn’t give us access to the more natural Siri/Apple Intelligence voices. They do have an option for the user to download a more “premium” version of their AVSpeechSynthesizer in the accessibility settings, and I am actually implementing that right now for a version 1.2 update (along with many additional sentences.)

The only other alternative is for me to spend thousands of dollars on voice actors to read each and every word and sentence (which I obviously can’t afford as an indie developer) and then include all of those audio files into the app which would then add bloat to the app and your iPhone.

As soon as there is a better alternative than the AVSpeechSynthesizer, I will be updating the app accordingly.

### 3/5 — The groundwork is laid for this to be a very useable app.

*2026-07-14*

It reminds me of a Toki Pona version of the app “Lingua Sacra”.
However, there is still a bit of work to be done and doesn’t yet justify its price point.

Right off the bat I’m hit with some very poor AI pronunciation of words and incorrect stressing of syllables. This makes the app not only more difficult to use, but flat out teaches the user incorrect pronunciation. The “sentences” portion only has a few preselected phrases that you’ll go through in about 10 minutes.
The dictionary is good…. But again… poor AI pronunciations make it almost unusable.

Flash cards and matching apps are great, and the grammar instruction is great for those that prefer using textbook style learning methods.

Fix the AI voice and provide more sentences if you’re going to charge for the app.

Address these and you have an efficient and effective app to teach this simple language.
pona tawa sina. mi towa.
