## What is Kana?

Master hiragana and katakana — then use it to earn your screen time.

Kana teaches Japanese writing through structured lessons, four quiz modes, and a mastery system that keeps you drilling the characters you actually struggle with.


FOUR WAYS TO QUIZ

→ Multiple Choice — kana-to-romaji, romaji-to-kana, or both directions
→ Typing — type the reading from memory
→ Drawing — sketch freehand or trace over a ghost outline to build muscle memory
→ Vocabulary — read real Japanese words built from kana you've learned


STRUCTURED LESSONS

Lessons are organized by row (vowels, K-row, S-row…). Each drill loops until you get every character right, then reveals the real words you can now read. Progress is tracked per row for both hiragana and katakana.


SMART PRACTICE

The app tracks every answer. Characters you miss repeatedly surface in a Suggested Practice card — an auto-generated focus session built around your weakest kana. Mix any quiz modes, pick your kana set, and set a question count from 5 to 100.


APP LOCK — EARN YOUR SCREEN TIME

Lock any apps on your phone behind a kana quiz. Pass the quiz and those apps unlock for a window you choose (default 30 minutes). It runs on Apple's Screen Time framework — system-level, no workarounds. Turn social media into your study reward.


TIME TRIAL

Race the clock and log every result. Tap any past session to reload its exact settings and track how your speed improves over time.


MASTERY SYSTEM

Every kana has five mastery levels that fill in as you answer correctly across sessions. The full reference table shows your mastery overlay at a glance — tap any character to see its mnemonic.
