Super Solid App
A great app for learning hiragana and katakana. Straightforward, but engaging. I like it quite a lot!

Really clean interface and makes learning Japanese a lot more fun. Flash cards are great and it is really cheap to buy the full version. The app is great and has many modes but in between questions takes forever! It takes at least 5 seconds to go to the next question, it shouldn’t take time away when you get a question correct but it does anyway. Other than that, great app.

Delay is infuriating
On first blush the app is quite polished, with both kanas, and a nice minimalist interface that doesn’t get in the way of learning. The levels build on each other and the compounds are a good way to break up the repetitiveness.
All of that praise is destroyed by the loading time for characters in the quiz. The quizzes are time based, creating a sense of pressure that can be useful. However it takes 3+ seconds just to do the pop-out animation for the answered question. This is unconscionable in a timed quiz, and very quickly becomes infuriating.
This behaviour effectively puts a cap on the number of questions you can answer of ~30 for no discernible reason. Speed of recognition is a significant aspect of fluency, and this app shoots itself in the foot by denying the learner the opportunity to test themselves in this way.
