### 3/5 — Needs work

*2020-04-03*

Maybe it was good at the time it was developed over 10 years ago or if it was free. I got this app because of the option to take a test by drawing the kanji to answer instead of typing. However, when you submit your answer it has you push the next stroke button to compare yours to theirs and then you decide if you got it right or not. This too too long even with the most simple kanji and can only imagine the pain it’ll be when doing the 10+ kanji. Considering it’s paid and the Japanese learning innovation these days from other websites and apps, I would have at least expected it to tell me if I got the answer wrong and try again. I would happily change my review if it improved and it helped my study, but at this point I feel I’m better off looking at an image of kanji stroke order and using paper and pencil

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. It's not necessary to skip through all strokes. You can also base your correct/wrong decision solely on the kanji itself. Most users actually do that. Only if you are unsure about the order you can skip through the individual kanji.

The reason why I let the user decide, is to avoid false wrong/correct judgment by the app (and subsequent bad ratings: "App sometimes judges my correctly written kanji as wrong"). No matter how good an algorithm you use, this can never be avoided. Every user might have a different point on the threshold of what is still correct. For instance stroke order: Some users might still see their answer as correct even if their stroke order is slightly different from the text book order. Also some advanced fast drawing users might already adapted a certain handwriting style. This style might still be readable by a person and technically correct but judged as wrong because the strokes are to far of the reference strokes.

### 5/5 — Great App to Learn Kanji!!

*2015-10-16, version 2.3*

This app has been great. I have used it for several years and it is the simplest way to practice Kanji! Highly recommended for anyone studying Japanese.

### 5/5 — Funktioniert, fehlerfrei.

*2015-04-27*

Ich finde die App gut. Tut was es soll, alles in Ordnung.

P.S.: Würde mich über eine automatische Stricherkennung freuen, so müssten die Antworten nicht selbst überprüft werden, ist aber nur eine Anregung, aber auch so ist sie die top App zum Lernen der Kanji.

### 5/5 — Great App, Wonderful Support!😀

*2015-03-14*

After running into a few major issues one of the developer's other apps (which ended up being the fault of my device ) and emailing the developer I received immediate support. This app itself is smooth, simple, and fantastic for learning to write Kanji. The app is all about utility and it performs! There is a huge amount of content and many ways to test yourself and learn. The most unique and helpful feature that it offers is the ability to grade your own writing and stroke order in a step by step manner. There is no automatic writing detector to be picky and mark you wrong because the angle was "slightly off". This app makes studying and learning Japanese a breeze! It is an absolute must have for any learner! Thank you Jan for bringing this helpful tool to life! I don't have a single regret in purchasing this app!

### 5/5 — Japanese LS kanji

*2015-01-06, version 2.01*

This is an update to a previous four-star review I posted two years ago. The issues I identified at that time have all been resolved, and the support from the developer has been excellent. This app is absolutely packed with features. After using it for two years, I am still stumbling across new ones. It's not cheap, but if you are serious about learning the kanji, this is the best investment you will ever make.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2014-06-28, version 2.01*

Great app for everyday practise and efficient service

### 5/5 — Spitzenklasse!

*2014-05-16*

### 5/5 — excellent app (especially on an ipad)

*2013-03-21, version 1.4.4*

I have quite a few Japanese and Kanji apps. This is one of the two or three that I consistently use and make progress with.

It works. Simple and good.

(though I wish I could change the colors; don't really like the black background, alas)

It would really be nice to have DROPBOX support!!

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2013-02-09, version 1.4.4*

Worth every penny. I've been learning Japanese and this app has helped in so many ways. Downloaded lots of other apps but none of them are as simple to use. Huge thanks to the developers! Nice work!

### 4/5 — Presque comme un prof!

*2013-01-23*

Très bonne application qui permet, après une petite prise en main de mémoriser les principaux Kanji, sans avoir à fouiller dans plusieurs livres pour trouver le bon. Il manque peut être la possibilité de se créer sa liste personnelle. L'ordre et le sens des traits est enfin explicite.
Ca vaut son prix, c'est sans fioritures, et ça atteint son but. Que demander de mieux?

### 4/5 — Great app

*2013-01-08, version 1.4.4*

Great app for practicing kanji. Testing abilities are pretty good. Would recommend this app to anyone learning Japanese .

### 4/5 — TB produit

*2012-10-20*

Pas d'erreur sur la marchandise. Apprentissage ludique et reconnaissance de Kanji. Pour moi qui parle mais n'écrit pas et manque de vocabulaire c'est parfait. Il ne combine pas les kanjis certe mais ne prétend pas le faire. Esthétique aussi sans fioriture. Très contente.

### 3/5 — Best of all the kanji apps so far.

*2012-07-14*

Ok so needs some work on setting up which kanjis to learn. Being able to divede the joyo kanji into whatever size groups the user would like would really help. The background needs to be user set to whatever color I really hate the black orange. Its almost insulting. Also there is not one app that just does the 212 radicals only grouping the kanjis by radicals would be useful knowing all the radicals should come first.

**Developer response:** Please contact me directly if you find bugs or have suggestions. Most of these items were added already:
- break up sets, create or import your own sets
- change color scheme
- Overview of Kanji sorted by Radical is available in the app

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2024-11-07*

The way the app tests writing input is it actually doesn’t. It just gives you a notepad to draw on, then you can reveal the stroke order, then you yourself decide whether you were correct or not. “Learn Japanese! - Kanji” by Luli Languages LLC is a much better app as it corrects your stroke order in real time. I do not recommend trying this app as the App Store/developer does not offer refunds so there is no trial period to decide whether this app fits a user’s needs.

### 1/5 — Zu wenig

*2015-01-07*

Technisch veraltet und insgesamt zu schlecht. Umfangreiche Datenbank genommen und lieblose App drum geklatscht.

**Developer response:** Die App wurde inzwischen aktualisiert und auf Basis von konkreten Nutzerrückmeldungen verbessert. Wenn du konkrete Vorschläge hast schreib mir gerne eine Mail. jan(a)asia-ls.com

### 1/5 — Love this but

*2013-12-07, version 2.01*

I love this app, I have both the Japanese and kanji LS apps but they are completely broken right now on my iPad 2 iOS 5. Cannot draw anything in the practice or test modes

### 1/5 — I won't be updating!

*2013-07-24, version 2.0*

I had updated the developers Kana LS app and the new interface is ugly and awkward. I was hoping he'd leave the kanji version alone. I will NOT be updating.

The original version is elegant, attractive and easy to use. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

### 1/5 — Horrible

*2010-09-27, version 0*

I wish I hadn't wasted my money, the colour scheme hurts my eyes after about 10 minutes of use. Limited prefs e.g. no option to turn off English readings. Really badly designed both in form and functionality. Try KanjiBox for serious study, drills and quizzes plus a decent dictionary app like Midori instead.

### 1/5 — kanji ls touch

*2010-03-23*

tolle idee, leider ist der akku nach 15 min dann leer.

### 2/5 — ไม่ค่อยดี

*2012-08-03, version 1.4.3*

ไม่ค่อยดีในเรื่องการใช้งานครับ ถ้าจะหาว่าคันจิตัวนี้แปลว่าอะไรต้องนั่งหาตาเหลือก มันเป็นแค่สอนไปทีละตัวอะครับไม่ค่อยดีสำหรับนักเรียนที่ไม่ค่อยมีเวลานะครับผมว่า

### 2/5 — An sich ganz nett, ABER...

*2010-09-02*

Einige Funktionen fehlen mir. Das Design ist wirklich mies. Mehr als 4 Eur, sollte sie nicht kosten.

### 2/5 — Not too shabby

*2010-05-26*

It's a bit overpriced for what it is, but it's decent. The UI could be improved a bit. I think it would be nice if the program itself could decide whether your input was correct or not--at least in the practice window where it shows you where to draw the lines. Instead, you have to tell it whether you were right or not. And it would be nice if you didn't have to go to the settings menu to change what kind of test you wanted to do and what set of kanji to test. When you start a new test it should open up a window asking you what kanji set to use and what type of test to do, maybe even how many characters to test. The data could be populated by the defaults set in the settings menu, but it should be something you don't have to go to the settings menu to change.

Also, I just opened it up again after having closed it and now when I check my answers it doesn't show the right answer, so I don't know if I'm right or wrong. This bug needs to be fixed.

### 2/5 — Becareful

*2009-11-12, version 0*

I have just bought and used this app which I feel is far over priced! Yes it's. Great feature to be a able to draw kanji but the software never tells you if your right or wrong?!

For the money I paid I am disappinted.

### 5/5 — Tolle Kanji-Lern-App auf Deutsch

*2026-01-02*

Die App ist als deutsche Kanji LernApp einmalig, super Funktionen und umfangreiches Kanji Wörterbuch. Mit etwas Übung sehr individuell einstellbar. Außerdem bekommt man sehr schnell Antwort bei Fragen. Der Preis ist ein Schnäppchen.

### 5/5 — Übersichtlich und durchdacht

*2025-02-04*

### 5/5 — Best app for learning kanji that I’ve found so far

*2021-07-22, version 3.3*

I can’t just memorize kanji by looking at them. For me, I needed an app that taught me how to write them - it’s the only way I could really learn them. So far, I’ve made it through the N5 and N4 sets (284 total). Best way to use this tool is to go to Settings/Test Set and set the range to 20 characters at a time. As I then test myself every day, and start consistently getting 100%, I move the range from “86-105” to “91-110” (for example). That way I’m introducing a small amount of new material and reinforcing the old. I recommend this app to everyone I know who is learning Japanese!

### 5/5 — Quite good

*2019-08-08, version 3.0*

A good way to learn kanji.
However, if more radicals were identified and explained, it would accelerate learning.

The ability to vary and have so much control over the test modes is excellent.

### 5/5 — Echt Super

*2019-01-13*
