## What is Kappa?

Kappa is a factor-based stock screener inspired by 50+ years of historical stock market research. It helps long-term investors screen for undervalued, profitable, and financially strong stocks using a disciplined factor-investing approach.

Kappa focuses on factor investing: a systematic way to compare companies by measurable fundamentals such as valuation, profitability, and financial strength. Instead of trying to predict the next hot stock, Kappa helps you rank stocks, compare fundamentals, and review portfolios with a consistent research process. 

Instead of buying the whole market blindly, Kappa helps you select stocks that meet specific fundamental criteria. In practice, this is similar to creating a custom index: a portfolio of companies selected by valuation, profitability, and financial strength rather than by market capitalization alone. 

The S&P 500 is not magic. It is a strategy: buy large US companies and weight them by market capitalization. Kappa uses a different set of rules. Instead of selecting companies mainly because they are big, Kappa ranks stocks by valuation, profitability, and financial strength.

Historical factor research suggests that such rule-based strategies have outperformed S&P 500 in certain long-term periods. Kappa brings this approach into a simple screener: rank the market, choose a strategy, build a diversified portfolio, and review it periodically.

Kappa updates market data every 5 minutes and recalculates stock fundamentals as prices change. The app tracks more than 5,000 US-listed stocks across NYSE and NASDAQ. Kappa calculates 15 fundamentals and groups them into three main ranks:
– Valuation
– Profitability
– Financial strength

You can use these specific ranks separately or combine them with the Best Rating strategy. Each stock receives one of five Kappa model ratings:
– Strong buy
– Buy
– Consider
– Avoid
– Strong avoid

Kappa uses classic fundamentals such as P/E, P/S, P/B, P/FCF, EV/EBITDA, ROE, ROA, ROI, Net Margin, Quick Ratio, Current Ratio, and Debt-to-Equity. It also includes financial strength metrics such as Altman Z-Score and Piotroski F-Score to help evaluate financial health and bankruptcy risk.

Kappa’s methodology is inspired by historical factor research. Backtests cited in James O’Shaughnessy’s widely known book “What Works on Wall Street” reported annual returns in the 18–20% range for certain strategies in tested periods — roughly 6–8 percentage points above the broad market. Kappa turns this research into a practical stock screener.

I’m giving this app 5 stars solely because it teaches what I believe to be the secret to successful investing. My philosophy was developed from reading dozens of books written by, or about, Buffet, Lynch, Fisher (Phil & Ken), Dreman, Greenblatt, Graham, and Marks. Kappa uses a similar approach, I just use different metrics. I have simplified investing by looking at groups of financial metrics to determine companies I choose to invest in. By ensuring financial strength, excellent profitability metrics, and attractive valuation, I am certain to get quality companies at fair prices (at worst) Kappa teaches the same philosophy. It’s worth downloading the app, reading their strategy explanation, just to learn what is a very successful long term investing strategy.

BUUUUUT; the data is old unfortunately. This is one of my top 5 all-time favorite investing apps, and they don’t keep the data up to date 🤦🏻‍♂️ so it’s basically useless outside of learning the concept of the philosophy/strategy.

This is one of the 2-3 best apps I use to cut through the noise from financial markets. This app naturally follows the philosophy I developed for myself after studying the investment philosophies of legendary U.S. value and growth investors like Graham, Buffet, Lynch, Neff, Dreman, Fisher, Klarman, and Greenblatt. Choosing stocks with low valuation relative to peers, who also demonstrate favorable growth & profitability trends, significantly increases one’s probability of generating alpha. 

I love the simplicity of the layout, and the minimalist design of the app. It’s more bang for your buck with absolutely no useless information. I choose to base my decisions on raw data and business performance. I could not care less about the opinions of analysts or their speculative forward looking targets, revisions, beats or misses, short term data, forward looking data, opinions of management, or any other speculative, biased, or opinionated  information. This app doesn’t include ANYthing except the financial ratios & metrics. It’s hard to find such simple layouts that include quality metrics like P/FCF, EV/EBITDA, ROE, ROA, ROI, Operating & Net profit margins, Quick & Current ratios, debt to equity, Altman Z-score, and Piotroski F-score in one app and on one screen, for $10/month. This makes it incredibly easy to find stocks that are underpriced, with favorable growth and profitability metrics. 

I’m really particular about paying for investment data, most of the apps that charge $$ aren’t worth the price when so many free apps offer tools  to  improve returns. This is one I gladly pay $10/ month for. It’s one of the few apps I use that have taken my analysis time from days, to minutes, while helping to steadily increase alpha.I have been investing for 15 years, but I haven’t read an annual or quarterly report, nor have I read a deep dive from an analyst or financial blogger, in the past 10 years.It really can be as easy as Buffet & Lynch say, and apps like Kappa & Jitta make it possible to avoid drowning in all the (mostly) useless data investors cherish so much. 

No app has a goose that lays golden eggs, but apps like this allow you to dramatically downsize the investment universe. This eliminates investments with a lower probability of outperformance; like stocks that are overvalued, not yet profitable, have negative or low single digit growth rates, highly leveraged, in poor financial health, and those with poor management / profitability metrics.

Buffets first rule of investing is not to lose money. Eliminating low quality and overpriced stocks helps ensure one minimizes probability of significant loss in every investment. 

Kappa is one of 12-15 apps I use for simplified data presentation, margin of safety estimates,  or other proprietary rankings developed to simplify large amounts of investment data in easily digestible data points. The more apps you find that provide quality data, the stronger your investment thesis will be. I can take the results of a stock screen, and drop each ticker into Kappa, and only keep the Strong Buys with scores of 9-10, then run it through the next 5-8 apps and look for agreements among the different analytical styles. Sometimes, five apps will all agree that a stock is undervalued. Other times, one app will say a stock is 78% OVERvalued, and another will say the same stock is 46% UNDERvalued. These discrepancies will give one reason to dive deeper if they’re really curious, or throw it into the no-go pile due to the ambiguous fair value estimates. This is how I get to so many stocks every week. By eliminating stocks on the first negative strike, I remove as much risk as I believe is possible while increasing the efficiency of my due diligence by eliminating time spent analyzing lower quality investments.  

When you take a Peter Lynch approach to investing and look at hundreds to thousands, of stocks every week, it pays to simplify and streamline the analytical process as much as possible. Kappa does it as well as any app I use. I have ruined my phone downloading 50-100 apps at a time, going through investing apps that aren’t ridiculously priced to see the quality of their data & analysis, and the cleanliness & simplicity of the presentation of that data.
