## What is Kelo?

Kelo is a privacy-first FIRE retirement planner that runs 100,000 Monte Carlo simulations on your iPhone — no signup, no bank logins, no tracking.

Most retirement calculators use a single assumed rate of return and call it a day. Bank-connected trackers want your login credentials and sell your data. Neither helps you stress-test early retirement against the real history of markets.

Kelo is different. Every simulation runs on 98 years of historical US market data (1928 to present) using the same block-bootstrap method researchers use for retirement research. Nothing leaves your device.

WHAT YOU GET

• Rich, Broke or Dead? — actuarial survival overlay shows the 3-way split (funded, broke, deceased) for every future year, so you see if your money will outlast you — powered by SSA Period Life Tables (Free)
• 100,000 Monte Carlo runs on your iPhone
• Full FIRE, Barista FIRE, and Coast FIRE modes
• Three withdrawal strategies: Constant Dollar, Guyton-Klinger guardrails, and Floor / Ceiling
• Social Security claim-age modeling at 62, 67, and 70 — with COLA and NPV delta
• ACA MAGI cliff visualization with premium estimates and subsidy waterfall
• Side-by-side scenario comparison (Pro)
• PDF scenario export (Pro)
• Home-screen widget showing your FIRE progress ring
• Optional encrypted iCloud sync — off by default
• Compare to History — run your plan against 1966, 2000, or 2008 cohort returns to stress-test SORR (Free)

WILL YOUR MONEY OUTLAST YOU?

For most FIRE planners, a long, well-funded retirement is far more likely than running short — the antidote to one-more-year anxiety. Rich, Broke or Dead overlays SSA actuarial life tables to split each year into alive & funded, alive & broke, and deceased. Free. Based on public actuarial data, not a personal health prediction.

WHAT IF YOU RETIRED IN 2000?

1966 and 2000 are the FIRE community's worst-case SORR benchmarks — stagflation and the dot-com+GFC sequence. Compare to History overlays your exact plan on those returns. One verdict line on your Monte Carlo fan: green if the cohort survived your horizon, red if it depleted. No fabricated returns. Free.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Enter your portfolio, savings rate, and target spending
2. Pick a FIRE mode and stock / bond allocation
3. Run the simulation — see your success rate, median trajectory, and percentile fan chart
4. Save scenarios, compare them, and tune until you're confident

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2.1 — 2026-07-13

Export your numbers — and sharper Coast FIRE math.

v1.2.1 adds free CSV export: tap the share icon on any results screen to export your full year-by-year projection table — balances, withdrawals, and percentiles for every year of your plan. Open it in Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets and dig in. No Pro required.

This release also fixes Coast FIRE simulations. Running a Monte Carlo in Coast mode now models your growth years — your portfolio compounds from today until your target retirement age before any withdrawals begin — instead of assuming you retire today. Coast plans that are on track now read as on track. Social Security timing in Coast mode is corrected to match.

Also in v1.2.1:
• The results screen opens on your median projection by default
• A quiet, one-tap way to rate Kelo after a successful run — never a nag

As always: no bank logins, no signup, no tracking. Your data stays on your device.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-05-31

What if you retired in 2000?

v1.2 adds Compare to History — a free feature that overlays your exact plan against three named historical cohorts: 1966 (stagflation worst-case), 2000 (dot-com collapse → GFC), and 2008 (GFC anchor).

Every year on r/financialindependence, someone publishes the running tally for retirees who started in 2000. The FIRE community hand-rolls this analysis in spreadsheets — Kelo now does it for your specific plan, with your portfolio, your spending, and your Social Security and ACA modeling intact.

How it works: pick a cohort from the results screen. Kelo runs your plan against that cohort's contiguous SBBI return sequence (1928–2025 data, no resampling, no fabricated returns). The result overlays as a single line on your existing Monte Carlo fan chart — green if the cohort survived your horizon, red if it depleted, amber if history runs out before your horizon ends. The verdict is always labeled: "Survived all 40 years" or "Depleted at year 28 (age 93)." Fully accessible to VoiceOver.

This is a free disclosure feature for all users — no paywall, no trial required.

Also in v1.2:
• 1966 (stagflation), 2000 (dot-com+GFC), and 2008 (GFC) cohorts available at launch
• The cohort line is a second series on the fan chart, independently navigable by VoiceOver
• Truncated verdict (amber) shown when the cohort's historical data ends before your horizon — Kelo never fabricates returns

As always: no bank logins, no signup, no tracking. Your data stays on your device.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-05-24

Will your money outlast you?

v1.1 introduces Rich, Broke or Dead — a free actuarial overlay that answers the question most retirement tools never ask. For each future year, Kelo splits your Monte Carlo outcomes into three probabilities: alive & funded, alive & broke, and deceased, using SSA Period Life Tables.

The result is a stacked-area chart showing not just your portfolio survival rate, but how that risk compares to the odds you're still around to spend it. For most FIRE planners, a long and well-funded retirement is far more likely than running short — the antidote to one-more-year anxiety. Sometimes the math says retire already.

This is a free feature for all users. No personal health data. No medical claims. Grounded in public actuarial data.

Also in v1.1:
• The mortality-adjusted success rate now appears as a headline figure — the probability your money outlasts you — alongside the portfolio success rate.
• Pro PDF exports now include the Rich, Broke or Dead chart.

As always: no bank logins, no signup, no tracking. Your data stays on your device.
