Thankfully, this app was replaced, with one having greater functionality but only marginally better. Hopefully they will release an app worthy of its product. ### 2/5 — Needs updates *2020-10-20* App is nearly worthless now. I love this device but you can’t get much from the app since you have to guess at most of the selections. ### 2/5 — Great Device, Awful app *2020-09-01* I love the D3, wish I could say the same about the app. Dashboard wastes most of the screen with massive black blobs only allowing 3 different sensor readings. A better layout would allow easy viewing of all readings. On my iPhone X, the icons at the bottom of the screen interfere with the iOS swipe up making them very difficult to access. There is only a single setting for imperial or metric views. There should be a setting for each sensor. For example I’d like to view temperature in Fahrenheit, density altitude in feet, and pressure in millibars. Come on Kestrel, you can do better than this! ### 3/5 — Doesn’t always download data *2020-05-22* According to the manufacturer of the device it should be possible to download a log of readings from the device. This doesn’t work with all listed share options (eg the Files app) but I have found it works with email. Putting aside the limitations of the app, it’s a great device. ### 3/5 — Export working on iPhone 11 but not not new iPadOS *2019-10-24* Seems to work ok under iPhone 11 iOS 13, but took a few tries at first. Not sure why. Worked on the second drop unit right away. Never got my iPad Pro with the new iPadOS to export. Specifically for supporting newer devices such as iPhone XS and iPad Pro. Developers: Unfortunately, if you’re going to offer an app for iOS devices you need to accept the fact you will need to maintain and update it. This is not something you can set up and forget it. The functionality of connecting my device to iOS devices was certainly a factor when making my purchases. Now that it’s become clear the app is lacking even basic maintenance and updates I am becoming frustrated with my purchase. ### 2/5 — Drop D3 is great; app not so great. *2019-01-31* I am really happy with the Drop D3 for my needs. I am using it on backpacking trips to keep a log of temperature changes overnight. Having an app in my phone to visualize the log is great. Unfortunately, the app leaves a lot to be desired. It is very buggy. It has layout issues in various phone sizes. It has issues with crashing when data is cleared on the device. It has state management issues with some of the custom UI elements. I would give the Drop D3 five stars and the app one star. I looked on the Kestrel web site to see if they published an API guide for the device. I couldn’t find one. I would love to build a custom iOS app for this device. How about it? ### 2/5 — Update broke the layout *2018-10-17* It looks like the latest updates changed the UI to a fixed size that no longer accounts for different resolutions/aspect ratios. The interface looks absolutely terrible on my 6s plus. ### 2/5 — Can’t Export Data *2018-03-28* I really like this app but I am unable to export the data using an iphone or ipad. I am a high school science teacher and will be using some of the Drop D3s in class. My school uses Apple products mainly and I would like my students to be able to export and graph the data collected. Please update this app!!! ### 2/5 — Limited unit and plot control *2018-03-15* I bought this app to download and view temperature and pressure data from my D3 Drop. The app works very well when downloading the data from the logger, but the app offers limited control over display units (imperial or metric) and more importantly, pressure and time scales. The pressure plot always shows as a horizontal line, regardless of daily pressure variations, because the display scale is fixed at 29 to 32 inHg. This range scale is fine when a hurricane passes through, but useless for daily/weekly variations. Of course I can (and have) export the data to my phone or laptop, then plot using database software, but this defeats the reason to have the app plot the data. So two stars overall - good for downloading data from the logger, but useless for plotting that data. ### 2/5 — Old *2018-01-10* As much as I paid for my Kestrel you would think they would keep this app updated. ### 3/5 — Great Idea *2017-10-20* This app is an awesome idea. In theory, I can set the kestrel on a stand and not have to run up to it every time I want a reading. However, the app needs to be updated to be able to select individual units of measure like the kestrel can. I’m an Air Force weather tech and we take readings in knots. The current app only allows for imperial or metric which reads out as either MPH or m/s. Being able to individually select each unit of measure on the app would help out greatly! Please update! ### 2/5 — Coming from Android.. *2017-08-16, version 1.5.1* Most apps seem to work better on ios, this is not most apps. The android version allows pinch to zoom on the graphs, this does not. I am only interested in barometric pressure and the graph is usually out of visible range without being able to zoom out. I'm not very happy as I paid 250 for a drop which has no screen and cannot use it with this app in the way that it was intended. ### 3/5 — Good but needs work *2017-06-14* The app does not read what's on my kestrel display. Hasn’t for years and there seems to be little to no improvement whenever it happens to get updated. Very disappointing. ### 1/5 — Terrible App *2020-09-22* What is a good piece of equipment is let down massively by a very poor app. It doesn’t even fit my phone screen (iPhone X 3 years old). Un-clickable buttons etc. ### 1/5 — Poor showing by Kestrel *2019-12-03, version 1.5.3* Kestrel has a lot of nerve charging extra for the LiNK feature and then providing this half-baked app to interface with it. Data export does not work on an iPad Pro. Contacted Kestrel, they stated it would be fixed 10 months ago. ### 1/5 — Abandonware *2019-01-30* The app was never properly updated to support modern screen sizes. Previously, the app was simply stretched from the iPhone 5 screen size; now, it renders at the proper resolution but its layout is totally broken and buttons are actually hidden underneath misaligned UI chrome. Extremely disappointing since the Kestrel hardware was not cheap. ### 1/5 — 1.5.3.0 version of app is horrible *2018-10-07* Unable to edit the dashboard. Before was nice and clean outlay and now they’re just black squares that look like we're made in windows 98 Paint with the temperature stick in middle frustrating! Can I can go back to the old version? ### 1/5 — Basic things work, needs update *2017-08-20* Mostly works just fine for real time reporting, desperately needs a way for user control of x and y axis ranges in data plots without exporting to excel. And even as for stats page, with min and max values noted, there is no way to correlate back to date of occurrence. Come on Kestrel. Its been over a year since my last review update. No updates since then. You are now down graded another two stars. Device is good. Your app sucks, in so many ways. ### 1/5 — Bluetooth is completely unstable *2017-02-07, version 1.4.1* This app is completely useless with my Kestrel Elite. It will not stay connected via Bluetooth for more than a few seconds. ( now add wind speed and direction from the kestrel wind meters please ) ### 5/5 — Kestrel Drop App *2015-10-03, version 1.0.7.16* App works well with the Kestrel Drop. App allows the user to see the current conditions (the app supports all of the available Drop Sensors) and view the logged sensor readings. The app also provides derived readings (as an example, dew point is not directly measured but is calculated from the temperature and humidity readings.) The app also allows alerts to be set for the readings, which seems to require more battery power (have not tried the alerts). The user interface is easily used and understood. The app quickly connects to the Kestrel Drip and allows users to select specific Drops if you have more than one. My single complaint is that the reading units are not individually selectable, so you can select Imperial or Metric units. As an example, if you want to use Fahrenheit, you have to have to use inHg and can't use mbar. ### 4/5 — Better than “upgrade” *2021-03-13* I was not happy with this app. Then I downloaded the new Kestral app - which is terrible. I need only to know the temperatures in my two garden plots, and to track/plot those temps over time. That works on this app, over time. I am really happy with the look also. 1 thing missing to get a 5th star. Be able to modify the graph and connect with apple home.
