## What is Keytionary?

You already know it's a Cmaj7. The question is how to play it.

Every other piano chord app lights up four keys and stops. But four dots on a keyboard isn't the hard part — voicing the chord so it actually sounds good in your track is. Keytionary is built for that.

Pick any chord. Hear every way to voice it:
• Close, Open (drop-2), Drop 3, Drop 2 & 4
• Shell and rootless voicings (the jazz/neo-soul backbone)
• Wide two-hand spreads and stacked-fourths quartal voicings
• Upper-structure triads — the "triad over bass" trick

And it answers the question every app ignores: what does your left hand do? Swap the foundation under any voicing — root, root + 5th, root + 10th, octaves — and hear it change instantly.

Plus the full reference: 35 chord types, scales, diatonic and famous progressions, and a playable keyboard — all with real piano samples.

### 4/5 — Great start but it needs work

*2026-06-17*

I was messing around with the app and as an acid piano learner I think this is a great beginning, but you need to work on the Audio functions. if I rapidly click on a chord, instead and unpausing it rapidly, it will just play multiple of the same audio files at the same time and completely glitch out for a solid second.

Incredibly useful tool still but it needs work.

**Developer response:** Hi Collinc09,

Thank you so much for your honest feedback. We want to make Keytionary the optimal experience for learning chords and voicings so the audio playback is key. We are pushing an update to the app that will address the chords interrupting another and glitching as you described. We plan to keep iterating on this feature to make it as seamless as possible moving forward. Thank you again for the feedback and we are glad to hear you find the tool useful.

Added "identify" mode. Allows the user to select keys and lookup what the chord is called.

### 3.0.0 — 2026-07-04

• Voice-led progressions (Pro) — chord voicings that flow smoothly into the next. Common tones held, other voices move by step. Sounds like a producer played it.

• Chord Identifier — new tool on the Tools tab. Tap notes on a piano, get the chord name back — inversions handled with slash notation (e.g., Cmaj7/G).

• Daily chord & scale — a fresh pick every day on the Keyboard tab, with a streak chip to keep the habit going.

• Scale playback — tap Play on the Keyboard tab to hear any scale in your key, each note highlighted as it sounds.

• Cleaner chord playback — chord attacks now fire tightly together, and rapid retriggers cleanly re-articulate instead of stacking into audio soup.

Updated audio engine playback for smoother performance

### 2.1.2 — 2026-06-19
