## What is Kidney Pal?

Finally, an app that understands YOUR kidney disease.

Managing a kidney diet is overwhelming. Every food label feels like a puzzle. Generic nutrition apps don't understand phosphorus additives, potassium limits, or why your dietary needs are completely different from someone at a different CKD stage.

KidneyPal changes everything.

PERSONALIZED TO YOUR CONDITION
Tell us your kidney condition—CKD stage, dialysis status, kidney stones—and KidneyPal sets personalized daily limits for sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and protein tailored specifically to you.

AI-POWERED FOOD SCANNING
Snap a photo of any meal or nutrition label. Our AI instantly analyzes it and gives you a kidney safety score based on YOUR limits—including hidden phosphorus additives that other apps miss. Get smart swap suggestions to make any meal safer, and chat with the AI to ask questions about what you just scanned.

LOG MEALS YOUR WAY
Scan photos, use voice or text quick-logging, browse our recipe library, or enter nutrients manually. Every method automatically tracks fluids too. No more juggling multiple apps.

KIDNEY-SAFE RECIPE LIBRARY
Browse delicious recipes with kidney safety scores and complete nutritional breakdowns. Each recipe shows exactly why it's safe for your kidneys, with ingredient-level guidance. Have questions? Chat directly with any recipe to get instant, personalized answers.

IMPORT ANY RECIPE
Found a recipe online you want to try? Just paste the URL and KidneyPal instantly analyzes it for your kidney diet — giving you a safety score and complete nutritional breakdown before you cook.

SEE YOUR PROGRESS
Track nutrient trends over time with beautiful charts. See your good days vs. bad days at a glance. Build streaks to stay motivated. When it's time for your doctor visit, export a complete report to share with your care team.

### 5/5 — Making a Difference!

*2026-08-23*

I’ve been using this app for 90 days and it’s made a difference in my husband’s numbers! He has Stage 2 CKD. The selection of recipes, the ability to import recipes from other sites (such as DaVita) and to create my own recipes is great. The app is easy and straightforward. I’m so grateful to the developers for creating this tool.

### 5/5 — Absolutely indispensable

*2026-07-31*

This is my third time reviewing, so I feel like a lunatic, but if I had waited a week or so, instead of nit-picking about trivial things, this is the review I would give: this app has become an indispensable tool to stay 3A for as long as possible.

I tried reading books that used complicated calculations for everything you eat, and they all disagree on what you can and can't eat--which would basically be water and twigs, according to some of these authors--but this app does all the calculations for me, and I'm learning quickly that I can eat most foods (albeit, very little animal protein), depending on what else I have eaten that day. Almost as importantly, I'm discovering what limits I have--4 oz of chicken put me over my protein allowance, so apparently, I've been eating way too much protein. I've also been drinking *too much* water, which surprised me.

I'm donating the books I bought to a clinic because not only were the calculations insanely complicated--and I'm a math-phobe--the recipes are depressingly bad, as well as their lengthy list of "verboten" foods, when in fact, they aren't verboten, it's just all a matter of perhaps eating smaller amounts and balancing that with whatever else you eat on that day, which this app makes super easy to figure out.

I only wish my nephrologist had been as helpful as this app. As far as negatives? I still wish they used calories instead of kilojoules, but I've bookmarked a converter online, so it's a very small inconvenience. Yes, compared to some apps, this one might be a bit pricey looking at first, but it's well worth the money!

**Developer response:** Thank you for coming back to write this — reviews like yours are exactly why we built KidneyPal, and "I wish my nephrologist had been as helpful" made our week. One thing we'd love to fix: KidneyPal should be showing calories, not kilojoules. If you're seeing kJ somewhere in the app, could you email a screenshot to support@kidneypal.app? We'll get it sorted. Wishing you a long, healthy run at stage 3A!

### 1/5 — Not liking this

*2026-07-29, version 4.26.0*

Manually enter food. No numbers for sodium etc filling in and tracking.

### 1/5 — Horrible app

*2026-07-29, version 4.26.0*

I have CKD and ingredients esp protein are very important part of my health. I scanned a container of high protein yogurt this am and the ingredients kidney pal listed were way off. It is important I do not exceed my protein limit but with inaccurate info I could easily non knowing double my limit

### 2/5 — Doesn’t Add Up !!!

*2026-07-28, version 4.26.0*

This app must be consistent and 90% correct but afraid to rely on it comparing foods with Yuka there are major screw ups. Scanner sucks!! Doesn’t list hidden ingredients, often contradictory! And mostly, can’t rely on this with CKD3B. I already paid but will dispute. That’s why there is no free trial. Research this app and those of you please use caution on replying on it . Use Yuka for free the scanner works on all bar codes unlike Kidney pal. I’m getting kidney Safe when it isn’t according to Yuka scanner. Just some thoughts, if kidney function gets worse from using this App they better lawyer up !

### 1/5 — Way too inaccurate

*2026-07-23*

The ap consistently misidentifies food. It will recognize pineapple as a fish filet. Rainbow trout as a pork chop. Cauliflower as Mac and cheese. It consistently overestimates salt and other problems in home cooked food and seems to have no way of correcting the misconceptions. Someone with CKD is trying to manage those, constantly checking labels, choosing alternatives to minimize sodium, phosphates etc, but the ap does not consider this. I thought at least it might help with eating out, but the ap only works with a live internet connection unavailable in restaurants. You cannot even take a photo to be analyzed when you get home. This is so inaccurate I do not want to use it. And they charge you a fee to use it.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the detailed feedback — a few of these have fixes we clearly need to make more visible. If the AI misidentifies a food, you can correct it: tap the food to edit its name, portion, and every nutrient number, or simply tell the chat "this is rainbow trout, not pork chop" and it will re-analyze. For home cooking, telling the chat "no salt added" adjusts the sodium. And for eating out: take a photo with your regular camera, then import it from your photo library in the scanner when you're back online — analysis does need a connection, but the photo doesn't have to be taken live. We'd genuinely like to dig into the misidentifications you saw: support@kidneypal.app.

### 4/5 — Needs one more thing

*2026-07-22*

I'm grateful for this app, because my dyscalculian brain shuts down just looking at the sort of complicated calculations to find out if a food is safe or not. I appreciate the nutrient breakdown, the green/yellow/ red system to denote whether the food is kidney-friendly or something to avoid. I also like that if you've eaten something high in potassium, for example, you get the tip "next time, switch the banana for an apple", etc.

Can't help but wonder, though--why aren't calories included? I hate having to pay for yet another subscription or go back and forth finding the calories on google. I mean, would it be that much more trouble to include calories in the breakdown? This would be especially helpful for diebetics.

### 5/5 — Fast food options

*2026-07-11*

Noticed some Taco Bell foods are kidney safe vs others! Would like to see safer fast food alternatives for specific fast food restaurants. I am a nephrology nurse practitioner. Significant portion of the population I deal with rely on fast food occasionally due to cost/energy constraints

**Developer response:** Thank you — hearing this from a nephrology NP means a lot. Great news: fast food already works well with the photo scan and the "Say or Type" quick log (e.g. type "Taco Bell bean burrito" and it scores it against the user's kidney profile). Even better: we're currently testing a menu-scanning mode — photograph a restaurant menu or menu board and get a ranked list of the kidney-safest options for that person's stage. Your point about cost/energy constraints is exactly who we're building it for. We'd genuinely value clinician input — please reach out at support@kidneypal.app

### 2/5 — Frustrated

*2026-07-07*

I just downloaded this app 3 days ago. It seems very useful and enjoyed the 3 days of usage. I keep getting a message to try PRO for free for “x” number of days. I am trying to enter food for lunch but I’m stuck in a loop. I do not want to try PRO for free. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but you should be able to decline trying PRO for free. I have since deleted the app.

**Developer response:** We're sorry that experience isn't what we intended, and your feedback is helping us fix it. To explain what happened: the free plan includes 5 AI food analyses per day (they reset at midnight). Once they're used up, the photo/describe buttons show the upgrade screen — but you never have to accept the trial. You can close it with the X, and you can always log food for free using Manual entry, Saved foods, or Recipes from the + button. We agree the app should say this clearly instead of just showing the upgrade screen, and we're improving that in an upcoming update. We'd love for you to give it another try — support@kidneypal.app if we can help

### 4/5 — Make serving sizes adjustable on recipes?

*2026-07-07*

Computers and apps can do anything they are programmed to do. Why haven’t you programmed your app to allow users to select number of servings on your recipes so that the app will automatically adjust amounts for each ingredient? Many recipe apps provide this.

I am only one person. Right now I have to get out my calculator and split ingredients to make one serving. Or figure out what to do with a second (or third and fourth) serving of the recipe, some of which don’t reheat well. I really don’t want to eat 4 servings of something.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the thoughtful suggestion! You're right — today the "Servings to Eat" adjuster on a recipe scales the nutrition numbers, but the ingredient list stays fixed at the full-recipe amounts. Automatically scaling ingredient quantities (so a 4-serving recipe shows amounts for 1) is a great idea and it's now on our roadmap — the way we store recipes makes this very doable. Keep an eye on upcoming updates, and if you have more ideas we'd love to hear them at support@kidneypal.app
