## What is KIGAKU?

KIGAKU is a visual learning app that teaches how machines work by letting you move them.

How do teeth change speed and torque? Why can a pulley or screw turn a small force into a large one? Move a slider and the mechanism responds at once, with its results updating alongside. The formulas in your textbook connect to motion you can see.

[Transmit power]
- Gears: how tooth counts set speed and torque
- Belt drive: pulley diameter and speed ratio
- Planetary gear (new): hold a different part for reduction, overdrive, or reverse

[Multiply force]
- Pulleys: rope count, required force, and pull distance
- Lever: fulcrum position and balance of moments
- Screw: turning torque into thrust, and efficiency
- Hydraulics: Pascal's principle and piston area ratio

[Convert motion]
- Linkage: four-bar paths and Grashof's condition
- Cam: shapes that turn rotation into lift
- Crank: converting rotation and reciprocation
- Geneva drive (new): turning steady spin into stop-and-go steps
- Robot arm: joint angles and tip position

[Features]
- A sheet explaining the formulas and principles of each mechanism
- Learn without an internet connection
- Dark and light modes
- Available in 74 languages
- Free, with banner ads only at the bottom of the screen

Great for students of mechanical engineering and robotics, anyone curious about how machines work, and teachers looking for classroom material.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 3.0.0 — 2026-11-02

3.0.0
- All-new design
- New modes: planetary gear and Geneva drive
- Now available in 74 languages
- New ad system, with ad settings added

### 2.1 — 2026-06-03

- Linkage now scales with the screen, so the mechanism appears full-size on iPad and other large displays

### 2.0 — 2026-05-15

- Every simulation now shows its headline result right on the canvas
- Lever now correctly switches between 1st / 2nd / 3rd class
- Linkage shows the current mechanism type (crank-rocker / double-crank / double-rocker / change-point / non-Grashof) from Grashof's condition
- Crank shows r/l value and a piston-displacement plot with current-angle marker
- Cam shows current lift / max lift / angle, with axis label on the trace
- Gear labels each gear with its tooth count and a rotation-direction arrow
- Hydraulic shows the (D₂/D₁)² area-ratio derivation above the pipe
- Belt drive shows belt-direction arrows and per-pulley RPM
- Robot arm: drag the tip to drive inverse kinematics
- Pulley wording unified around the supporting rope count N
- Pulley and Lever metric label changed to "Required Force"
- Linkage canvas re-centered
