## What is Kinefinity?

The new Kinefinity Connect App is capable of real time monitoring, setting camera parameters instantly and wirelessly when paired with MAVO Edge 8K/MAVO LF/MAVO/TERRA 4K (firmware KineOS6.5), and an external wireless AP. Naturally, it brings more involvement in field production and improves efficiency a lot.

The cinema camera works as WIFI Client mode, so it needs an external wireless AP (access point), which could be smartphone hotspot (do not recommend iPhone 11 or below as hotspot/AP, but iPhone12 series or above are good for hotspot/AP) or wireless router, dual band preferred.

The Kinefinity Connect App has three mode/pages:
1. Video mode: real-time video and key parameters;
2. Panel mode: key parameters only;
3. Setup mode: or menu/configuration mode. Input slate information and project information very easily.

Note: the performance of camera may be affected if number of active links is over six at the same time.

## Key features

- Real-time video monitoring
- Wireless camera parameter adjustment
- Camera setup and configuration
- Input slate and project information

### 3/5 — Huge Potential.

*2022-12-26*

With a recent gimbal upgrade (to Feiyutech SCORP Pro) I wanted a wifi option for a monitor. This app theoretically offered that. Eventually I got it to work by using a separate wifi router (an old O2 dongle) and using the QR code on the inside. The app then needs the correct IP to be manually inserted before the camera image is transmitted. Kinda flaky way of doing it but it works. iPhone 7 Plus (now obsolete by Apple standards) Kinefinity Terra 4K and Huawei E5770s-320 dongle. No SIM required as you’re essentially using LAN.
Serious issue- only the image is transmitted, so no camera menu is visible. Many of the camera functions can obviously be changed in the app, although there doesn’t seem to be the shutdown menu? Odd.

### 2/5 — Disappointing

*2022-09-14, version 2.02*

Unfortunately the app is a bit convoluted in that it doesn’t consistently work. The features that are implemented seem nice in theory but person they should contract someone to write the app and ensure proper functionality at this point. The cameras are amazing but at this point you’re almost forced to utilize additional hardware to consistently be able to view the work in near real time or with a client.

I give it two stars because the promised features are designed well in theory. The execution just leaves much to be desired.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t Work

*2022-05-19, version 2.02*

This app has never been functional for me. I followed every step in the set up have all the devices connected to Wi-Fi but the app fails connect to anything. I’ll also be screenshotting the clearly fake review in this App Store.

### 5/5 — Great app serving our production needs.

*2020-11-06, version 2.0*

This wireless Solution solves all our problems.

It has extremely detailed control over the camera as expected with an app developed by the manufacturer themselves. No more messing with control cables for other brands’ wireless products and worrying about their reliability and whether they even collaborate with Kinefinity to make them at all or not.
Truly a savior for assistants and gimbal users.

The system total latency is well controlled around 100ms. (Assuming you don’t use Too Old apple devices)
Maybe it doesn’t sound that good, but let me remind you it’s the latency of the entire system. The lowest latency I’ve seen off of any WiFi based video transmitter is around 55ms (Accsoon’s new CineEye 2 series, shameless ad plug haha.)
But this is, Comparing to a monitor connected to the same video source, meaning that when you really use it, the latency of the camera reading out the data from the sensor and processing it them send it out via hdmi or SDI will add to the total systemic latency. Usually 50ms and more for Proper cameras and 100ms and more for DSLRs I used.
The recent firmware adding h264 playback files is actually mostly meant for this. Now the Camera will encode a h264 stream alongside with your ProRes files, and send it directly to your phone or in your local network as an SRT video stream.

The ability to connect to other WiFi networks is the big deal, you no longer too need to temporarily sacrifice the connection to internet on your monitoring devices, and you can even use this srt stream to do wireless online streaming. With a 4G or 5G portable WiFi router, you can use Kinefinity cameras to stream on the go!
(Hats down for the poor celebrities and artists, they’ll have much shorter time to live as themselves in the future, imagine having to stream their personal lives 24hrs, but in cinema quality!)

Please know that now the camera scans QR code instead of letting you choose a network and dialing in the password. Instead you need a WiFi connection QR code generator that takes SSIDs and passwords and translate them to QR. Some android phones already does this and for apple users, there are some websites that does the job for you.

Okay I’m a bit zoned out and lost myself over here. Where was I, okay I totally forgot. Oh yeah you need kineOS 6.5 or later, the new firmware will activate WiFi connection ability on older Terra 4K, and you MUST install an antenna for the camera to connect to any WiFi source or create a WiFi hotspot for your phone to access.

The UI is nothing fancy, but it works well. You can dial in all the controls in the settings and I personally can ask for more. a bit unfortunate that there is no official android app, but considering how well apple implemented their low latency video related APIs, I think it makes sense to develop apps for iOS devices. Arm Macs also coming, so... probably it might even solve some DIT work later? (Yes you can record the video stream now already in this version.)

The only thing I personally want to see them improve upon is the streaming nitrate, Now it’s like 3 megabytes per second, probably even lower. I wish they can unlock more streaming bitrate options.

Oh did I even mention that it can send to up to 6 devices? In their official guides now they say it’s best to use less than 6 or 6 devices for the camera to normally operate. This tops any WiFi based video transmitter available now!

Okay, I got a bit over excited here. But really glad a reliable wireless control and streaming solution that doesn’t add to physical weight and space of the camera rig, is now available for every user now.

Looking forward to Mavo Edge! And good luck you guys!
Oh one thing, I personally recommend all Kinefinity users to join the Facebook group, I know sometimes the vibe isn’t that good, but hey, that’s where all the first hand info gets published!

See ya all,
Adam.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 2.02 — 2021-03-08

Improved stability when connected to wireless router, and optimized the image quality in video mode.

### 2.01 — 2020-11-17

Fixed issue of app start up issue in European area.

### 2.0 — 2020-11-06

Kinefinity Connect App which is re-designed from bottom to top works with Kinefinity cameras as MAVO Edge 8K/MAVO LF/MAVO/TERRA 4K (firmware KineOS6.5). The App can tune the shooting parameters or get the status of these cinema cameras instantly. The brilliant thing is that the App displays the video stream from cameras in real time, with super low latency if the iOS devices and camera work in stable and good WIFI environment, then the team members in the crew could watch the camera live view in real time, and accelerate the process of production a lot.

### 1.0 — 2013-10-24
