They recently dropped the ridiculous price and out a reasonable annual fee. Want a good 5 star opening app. Its right here. ### 5/5 — An indispensable tool for opening study *2022-09-14* I paid for an annual subscription ($13, I think) and I use this app every day. It’s the best I’ve found for drilling opening lines. I’m better booked up than my opponents who use Chessable. I maintain my openings in a Lichess study and import the PGN to the app, but you don’t have to do that, you can just select lines in the app. ### 5/5 — Absolutely brilliant *2022-09-14, version 1.8.2* This app is superb. Everything you need to store, track and train your opening rep, in a beautifully designed iOS app. I use this app for all my opening prep and training and would be completely lost without it. Better than cumbersome solutions like chessbase. The standard way of going through PGN’s felt so clunky, I’ve been looking for a way to train my repertoire through mastery, and this app is literally perfect. I think the best way to use this app is to go through your chess.com openings explorer and look at all of the responses you typically get. To the guy complaining about only getting 3 openings: I think that’s a reasonable starting point, maybe 5 might be a nice compromise. I personally don’t need more than 3 at the moment, and 17$ is a little steep for me right now. I do implore you to offer a monthly subscription. They are much more appealing as an impulse buy and I’d love to support this app. ### 4/5 — Would be a 5+ star program, if ... *2021-05-01* . . . if it were not so enormously overpriced. One can annotate and name moves and positions, organize openings using indentation etc. When in training mode, each variation is encountered once if done correctly, repeated at a later stage if done incorrectly. After training one can go over errors using the ‘>>’ button. Adding the ability to choose to train only the variations that one made mistakes in would further improve the app! The only thing the user needs to do, is to create their own openings, but there are other resources for that. It looks great and I love using it. Definitely helps learn the intricacies of openings. There are no ‘pre-programmed’ openings included that I could see, but to me that’s a good thing. Making the moves from the basics all the way through will help memory. Please can this be a one of price? Subscribing for something that once is finished and stable as this app and therefore wont get all that many new features hardly justifies another monthly bill. Three months sub ($20), and going by other app prices, would be a very fair price as a one off. Beyond that, what are we paying for? Also, please use Apple iCloud for syncing. There’s opening theory that extends way deeper, and it would be nice to be able to practice the main lines. If I build my repertoire on this app, I have to keep up my subscription. I’ll stick with ChessTrainer, one time fee. Consider making it a one time fee and I will buy plus give it 5 stars. ### 3/5 — Limited without EXPENSIVE subscription *2018-01-22* An annual subscription is $40! If you expect to still be playing Chess in a decade, and you think that you will still be using this app, that’s $400! Without the subscription you are limited to 3 files. You could do your White rep, your Black rep and 1 new line that you are experimenting with. This might work well for many people. What I want is a file for the Sicilian, a separate file for the French and so on. (Full Disclosures: I really dislike subscription software!) If not for the limitation and the cost of the subscription, the program would get 5 stars. If I could buy it for $20 or $30, I would buy it and give it 5 stars. I tried many apps and tools, but I found that those apps and tools just showed me the book and repeatedly quizzed me on which moves are right and wrong. On the other hand, King’s Cross has all of these features, it holds more moves than my other apps (which only held 100 moves on the free plan), and it is easy to replace moves on the smooth interface. The best thing about this app is that you can annotate the moves, and you can add multiple repertoires, so you can keep your moves separate (like a blitz repertoire and a classical repertoire). I’ve also put in my repertoire against each of my frequent opponents. This is useful for tournaments when I only find out who I’m playing 30 minutes ahead of time.
