The controls are a bit unusual since there are no knobs and some of the terminology is different from, per example Moog Model 15, but it is a great way to play around with modular sound design. Everything is clearly designed and there even is a short beginners guide online available. ### 5/5 — Amazing *2018-06-09, version 1.4* Thank you! ### 5/5 — Wonderful Synthesizer! *2018-02-19, version 1.1* This is without a doubt an amazing synth and my favorite synthesizer app at the moment. There are only a few minor issues I would like to point out to the developer or any beginners. Dragging the modules is sometimes difficult and glitchy. Naming and sorting patches should have a better interface. The keyboard should be redesigned in my opinion, maybe having different modes of a piano layout, a chord layout, and the current layout. Zooming should be reworked in some manner that is less limiting. While this may seem like a long list, this app is one hundred percent worth your time. Great work to the developer! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 3/5 — Mediocre filter, unintuitive note selection *2023-04-13, version 1.7* Seems like there’s potential, but the note selection in the sequencer is a turn off. I’d also like to see improvements with the filter since that makes the body of the sound. It needs more controls like resonance, roll-off, and note tracking, but also spacing for band-pass and band-stop (called notch in this app). “Amount” should be changed to “drive” and the model of the filter updated to reflect soft clipping when overdriven. These suggestions should give more life to your filter. ### 3/5 — Good modular *2020-10-12, version 1.7* It is just overwhelming for me and that’s ok. The interface is ok but I like the newer styles a bit more. For old school I give it a go. ### 4/5 — A very inspiring iPad synth *2024-02-07, version 1.7* The only problem I have is that there’s a glitch where in certain patches the sound will completely disappear after you switch to a different pattern in it, and I mean all of the sound. Allerdings ist die Bedienung teilweise etwas sehr fummelig. Es wäre auch schön, wenn beim Verändern der Parameter „sinnvolle“ Werte (z. B. Frequenzen) angezeigt würden. Dem Filter fehlt für meinen Geschmack noch ein Resonanzregler. Auch eine Möglichkeit, den Signalfluss zu splitten, so dass z. B. eine Modulationsquelle mehrere Ziele adressieren kann, vermisse ich. Das würde die Flexibilität enorm erhöhen. Ansonsten Daumen hoch👍 ### 4/5 — Great modular to play and you can’t beat the price *2020-05-12* Just getting into synth stuff and this is a blast to play along with. I don’t have a midi controller yet and I imagine using something external to get some sequences down would be awesome. I’m only scratching the surface so I can’t comment as to if it’s as flexible as a true modular but you can shape sounds using different modules and sequence up to 8 tracks in that fashion. Plus you can structure a song with up to 16 parts. Very flexible. I haven’t figured out a great way to sequence on the fly. Right now it’s more like a trigger and then scrolling to get a note. A bit more removed than I think it could be. Something like the way a circuit works would be sweet. All in all great job! Excited to explore this more tonight! ### 4/5 — Phenomenal App *2020-04-17, version 1.7* You can do so much with this app, it’s hard to believe that it’s free. Whether you want to mess around and make robotic bug noises, get your feet wet with modular synthesis, or compose an electronic song, Klankwelle has got you covered. If you’re new to modular synthesis, there might be a bit of a learning curve, but it’s definitely worth it. Don’t be put off by the minimalistic GUI, this packs a punch. I read that the developer has plans to add a sampler in the future, and I certainly hope he does. I would also like the ability to have multiple patches per connection (to route one output to multiple locations, to route multiple sources to a single effects unit, etc.) The ability to have slower attack envelopes (for slowly building pads) would also be useful, but now I’m just dreaming. I debated giving this 5 stars because of how powerful it is for a free app. The only reason I went with 4 is because the interface can be a bit finicky at times (I’m trying to change a parameter—not move the entire module, etc.). I’ve also had the app stop outputting audio (though it continues to operate as if it is) a few times. This is usually remedied by closing and re-opening the app. All in all, Klankwelle is great! ### 4/5 — Powerful, but a bit tricky to use *2019-12-10, version 1.7* This seems like a great synth app, it has some of the best features and truly acts like a modular synth, giving you full control over everything. The only problem I have is that the active touch-points on the controls and linkages are very small, so it’s hard to ‘grab’ onto anything to change it ### 4/5 — So much potential!!! *2017-12-12, version 1.1* I love how simple it looks and the sounds it can produce. I would wish it would explain things more because I'm still really confused about the mechanics. ### 5/5 — pleasure *2023-05-25, version 1.7* I love this app. Its limitations are what they are, and the points of possible improvement are obvious after a bit of use. Yet the creative possibilities present in the app never fail to please me. The modular synth has inspired me to build evocative, subtle soundscapes, while the layered step sequencer turns multiple sound patches into emotional compositions. Klankwelle does this in one UI, without DAW mediation. Certainly we can take the results to a DAW for further work, but the immediate results provided through the sequencer bring a real sense of satisfaction after one works to build the synthesizer patches. The results depend on the effort the user chooses to make. Would I love an update? Yes, I would. That doesn't alter my affection for what the app offers already. ## Most praised reviews (9 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Brilliant, with lapses *2022-10-08, version 1.7* Lapses? That “keyboard” thing is just a no. No excuse, even if it is just to test sounds during the hookup stage of setting the synthesizers for use with the sequencing system. The virtual keys need work. Otherwise, this is brilliant. I am sure I reviewed it years ago (where that review went, I don’t know). I can’t do a real review now, but this app very much deserves love and support. It still works, though the developer appears to have moved on some time ago. For users, old and new, there is a powerful modular synth, complete with standard effect modules, that can be configured to serve multiple sequencer tracks. This gives you, effectively, eight synths at once, each with its own flexible sequencer. Whole compositions may be developed and played in this one app. For me, the beautiful ambient-suited textures of KW stand out, but what you make of it depends on your patching and sequencing choices, and on the extent to which you want to bring this into a broader working environment for music. Yes, the app could use a few improvements beyond the keyboard, with priority on interoperability functions. Each user will have a wish list, but that is the nature of modular: once the basics are solid, development can continue for as long as we have imagination. What we have here is a strong baseline system that can be grasped without too much work that could do with some simple updating. It would be lovely if the dev picked this up again. But the way this faded down the algorithm charts doesn’t make much sense at all, especially given that other, less-distinctive and/or harder-to-use modular-synth apps have had much more buzz. The app remains very much worth a good wallow now and then. It’s easy - in modular terms - to use and, along certain broad lines, it gives results I find much harder to replicate in other tools. KW isn’t a huge programming environment, and its graphics are relatively simple. There is a lot of beautiful work here, with many creative possibilities already in place. The sequencer is hard to operate though. It’s just not that intuitive. An extra visual would help a lot. Like a knob or if the color of the selected step changed with the octave. There is swing and velocity in the sequencer section up where the note button is on top right hand side. Simply scroll on note button to find it. There is a lot to discover with this. Overall a great introduction to modular synthesis and ideal for beginners as well as experienced users. I'm excited about getting deeper into this and writing music with the sequencer. I would request that there be swing added to the sequencer to bring it up one notch from already being excellent. That would be great, unless it's there and I'm missing it. Anyway, this is fun, simple and the wave forms and modulation possibilities means I see lots of sonic potential.
